Are we gross?

After trying to work out how our neighbours manage to run their dryer for 9-12 hours a day, 7 days a week (2 adults, 1 toddler), I had a poke around some old posts and I'm astounded to find out how often some people are using their washing machines/dryers.

It looks like it's common to be doing 2 to 3 washes a day which boggles my brain.

We (2 adults, no kids) do 1-3 washes a week.

How often do you guys wash certain items?

For us its:

Bedding - weekly / 10 days ish
Towels - weekly
Jeans - maybe 4 times a year
Shirts, tops, tshirts - every wear
Undies - obvs every wear
Hoodies, jumpers etc - whenever they smell or look dirty or out of shape

Do any of you wash everything after just one wear? Towels after each use?

Maybe your neighbours use cloth nappies- they used to take a while to dry in the drier for me!

dementedma · 28/03/2020 15:25

4 adults here. Normally about 4 loads a week. We wear things more than once, apart from.underwear.

BeesandGees · 28/03/2020 15:26

Two adults .
Washing machine on every day, sometimes twice a day.
Bedding once a week.
Towels get used twice then in wash so they count for a fair few loads.
We have work clothes, sport clothes, gardening clothes, lounging about clothes....... max of two wears if it’s not undies or sweaty sport stuff which obviously gets only one wear.
Pillow protectors, mattress protector every two weeks.
My jeans would be rank, and all misshapen after three months.

HarrietThePi · 28/03/2020 15:29

My household is 1 child and 2 adults, do 2-3 washes a week I'd say. 2 more often than 3.

Apolloanddaphne · 28/03/2020 15:31

Jeans 4 times a year? Is that a typo? If not then that is minging.

Khione · 28/03/2020 15:31

I wash my jeans about once a year - I probably only wear them 3 to 4 times each in that time.

BrieAndChilli · 28/03/2020 15:38

We are 2 adults and 3 kids age 9-13

Towels
Bedsheets
School uniform
Pe kits
Gym/sports kits
Cubs/scouts uniform
Normal clothes
Work clothes
Cleaning cloths and tea towels etc
Guinea pig blankets
Pyjamas

For 5 people it really adds up!

LouisaJenny · 28/03/2020 15:42

Hope the jeans bit is a typo!

Mines typically...

Jeans, tops, trousers, pyjamas after 2 wears
Underwear after everywhere
Towels weekly
Bedding every 2 weeks

I live on my own.

Holothane · 28/03/2020 15:43

We wash as soon as the laundry bin is half full or full, every three or four days,

MaccaPacca81 · 28/03/2020 15:43

Haha...the jeans...in my defence, jeans are my "thing" and I treat myself to quite expensive selvedge and raw denim. I have about 8 pairs in rotation. The general advice is to never wash them!! Just sponge them down as and when needed.

For those who do, why do you wash towels after just 2 uses?

OP posts:
OhNoNoNoNotThatOne · 28/03/2020 15:47

2 adults one baby we do 3 or 4 loads a week, not always full loads but always lights, colours, darks.

To answer frequency
Bedding - fortnightly
Towels - weekly
Jeans - every 4 or 5 wears unless something gets split
Shirts, tops, tshirts - work, after every wear for dh, usually every 2 wears
Undies - every wear
Hoodies, jumpers etc - same as jeans, 4 or 5 wears, unless they've just been over wear for a short while.

MikeUniformMike · 28/03/2020 15:49

I can easily get a couple of months out of a pair of jeans. It isn't gross - I wear them to go out then change out of them when I get home.

Jumpers and sweatshirts get washed if dirty or if they are about to be put away for the summer. Same as with jeans.

Slobby around the house clothes get washed when they are dirty, so quite often.

Bedding gets washed when it looks like it needs it.

Towels - if they smell, or if they've been used on bums and feet, or dirty.

T-shirts, socks and underwear - wear once then wash, but might wear a bra for longer - change into a crop top style one as soon as I get home.

I probably do a few loads a week. I use cloths instead of wipes and kitchen paper, so that adds to it.

A friend told me I was gross, but she washes towels once a week, and dries them on a radiator in between use - ugh!

Clothes last a lot longer the less you wash them, and washing uses a lot of resources.

Squoozie · 28/03/2020 15:50

Oh, goody, another competitive cleanliness thread Hmm

AutumnRose1 · 28/03/2020 15:51

The jeans thing, ugh.

I have a friend who wears dry clean only dresses about 20 times before they get cleaned. I don’t get it.

iMatter · 28/03/2020 15:54

I have a mate who hardly ever washes her jeans and you can smell her (crotch) a mile off

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/03/2020 15:54

Have you smelled the crotch of your jeans recently? Might be an ideaGrin

You haven't got kids, they can have 3 changes of clothes and bedding before breakfast.

PeterPanGoesWrong · 28/03/2020 15:56

Ugh! Shudders! You’re grim op.

Bedding twice a week, Monday and Friday.
Towels, after one wash in summer, 2/3 uses in winter.
Jeans, never more than ten days, often after a week.

MikeUniformMike · 28/03/2020 15:57

I probably don't wear the jeans that long each time. It might be something like 2 or 3 hrs at a time 2 or 3 times a week.

I don't wash the coat I wear to go to the shops very often.

CorianderLord · 28/03/2020 15:57

You're not meant to wash denim people. It damages it and pulls the colour.

fedup21 · 28/03/2020 15:58

@MaccaPacca81 was washing jeans 4 times a year not a typo??

diddl · 28/03/2020 16:02

"You're not meant to wash denim people"

I don't have any denim people so thankfully that's not a problem.

rainbow1982 · 28/03/2020 16:02

There's just 2 adults and I do 2 washes a week, bedding every week, towels use maybe twice, jeans 2-3 wears, pjs 3 wears

I don't know what's wrong with drying a towel on the radiator after use? Me or partner will dry our clean bodies after a bath so the towel is just damp but clean??? What's wrong with that?

ComeOnEileen11 · 28/03/2020 16:02

The jeans is gross.

Same as you re towels, bedding etc, but they're separate washes. Darks end up as once every 2/3 days, whites usually every 4/5 days. Cloth nappies/wipes every other day.

We're 2 adults and a toddler. DH has work stuff every day, he gets engine oil smells on him so he can't wear again. Toddler gets through a change of clothes and PJ's each day.

izzywizzygood · 28/03/2020 16:04

OP, you're right, jeans are not supposed to be washed too frequently - every fashion and fabric conscious person knows this. Plus, if you're not wearing the same pair every single day, then I think you're within reason. Other posters need to take into account that you may have several pairs and not wear them every day! I salute your cautious washing, as we have to protect the environment and large families are very damaging.

123rd · 28/03/2020 16:07

My DH has expensive jeans and was told to only wash them when they are in desperate need.
He only wears them in an office environment so don't get dirty really.
