Are we gross?

After trying to work out how our neighbours manage to run their dryer for 9-12 hours a day, 7 days a week (2 adults, 1 toddler), I had a poke around some old posts and I'm astounded to find out how often some people are using their washing machines/dryers.

It looks like it's common to be doing 2 to 3 washes a day which boggles my brain.

We (2 adults, no kids) do 1-3 washes a week.

How often do you guys wash certain items?

For us its:

Bedding - weekly / 10 days ish
Towels - weekly
Jeans - maybe 4 times a year
Shirts, tops, tshirts - every wear
Undies - obvs every wear
Hoodies, jumpers etc - whenever they smell or look dirty or out of shape

Do any of you wash everything after just one wear? Towels after each use?

So those of us who don't wear raw denim or selvedge jeans are OK to put them in the washing machine as per the manufacturer's labels?Hmm

Sparrowlegs248 · 28/03/2020 17:19

Keeping a 3 and 4 yr old occupied and happy has resulted in 3 or 4 changes of clothes some days this week.

Bluntness100 · 28/03/2020 17:29

Raw denim is a bit of a drip feed. ,,😂😂😂

cocomelon23 · 28/03/2020 17:42

I always got told not to wash my jeans. Only to sponge them down if they're actually dirty. This was from staff in Levi.

beachbreeze · 28/03/2020 17:51

Running a dryer for 9-12 hours a day!? Wow. I drape all of mine on an airer, and some small things on radiators and it all dries during the day.

Wash loads - I just don't know how many a week! It's just me and two children, one is still very little and messy, sometimes I have to change his clothes a few times in a day as they're soaked / soiled. I think I do one load of washing most days, probably around 5/6 a week.

beachbreeze · 28/03/2020 17:54

And no, I don't wash everything after one wear. No precise rule, but normally:

Toddler's clothes - yes one wear

Older child school uniform - tights and blouse one wear, dress and cardigan 2 or 3 depending how they look

My clothes - I check them and wash accordingly (smell, shape, etc)

Obviously all underwear and socks are washed each wear

MikeUniformMike · 28/03/2020 21:15

My jeans aren't expensive ones. The ones that don't need washing much are dark indigo.
When I put them on I am nicely scrubbed up and not covered in body cream.
Any marks on the jeans usually brush off, or can be sponged clean.
I wear proper knickers and do not have a leaky bottom.

I care about the environment and my jeans last for years. I have been known to patch them or cut them off into shorts.

GreyishDays · 29/03/2020 09:10

You maybe think a radiator is a perfect environment for germs on the towel, MikeUniformMike , but once the towel is dry it’s not!

CodenameVillanelle · 29/03/2020 09:15

I think people who do loads of washes separate everything and probably don't run the machine full. I don't separate anything and I do about 3 washes a week for one adult and one child.

MikeUniformMike · 29/03/2020 13:27

@GreyishDays, I'd rather not use it. Ugh!

LaurieFairyCake · 29/03/2020 13:33

Doesnt your Fanjo smell???

I wash jeans every week

Bath Towels only every 6 weeks

Sheets every fortnight (sometimes weekly)

Cashmere and wool jumpers very rarely - maybe only 3 times a year (I have a lot of them)

Everything else washed after one wear

lboogy · 29/03/2020 13:48

When I was single, I did 1-2 washes a week. Now two adults and a toddler, it's 2-3 washes a week.
We don't have a dryer sadly. Not enough room in the kitchen

GreyishDays · 29/03/2020 13:51

@MikeUniformMike Ugh to a towel being dried on a radiator? I’m not sure why?

11MrsLuther · 29/03/2020 13:54

There are 6 in my house. I do between 7 and 10 loads a week so pretty much the same as you OP.

CodenameVillanelle · 29/03/2020 13:56

Drying towels on the radiator is more efficient than air drying.

MikeUniformMike · 29/03/2020 14:04

@GreyishDays, A used, damp towel on a low heat radiator. Ok if you used it, but not if someone else has used for days. Personal preference.

MikeUniformMike · 29/03/2020 14:05

My towels go on the washing line.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 29/03/2020 14:34

For anyone wanting to know about raw and selvedge denim here

That's several minutes of my life under lockdown I won't get back Grin

DontCallMeShitley · 29/03/2020 17:58

So this is the old style denim that prisoners used to wearbecause it was cheap to make and hard wearing. Before jeans became fashionable and were treated.

A very expensive form of the cheap original stuff. And people have fallen for the marketing. At least the jeans will last the time of a lifetime prison sentence.

ludicrouslemons · 07/04/2020 06:10

We washed like you til we had kids.

My kids have three meals and two snacks each day. That's a lot of opportunity to smear. We use cloth nappies. That's easily three washes a week before you factor in wee accidents, nappy leaks, mud, dd deciding she no longer wants to wear what she's wearing etc.

Also kids puke on you a fair bit.

KatherineJaneway · 07/04/2020 06:22

I have cats so a few washes are the covers for the bed and sofa.

user1498572889 · 07/04/2020 06:26

Bedding once a week
Towels every other day
hoodies/cardi’s every couple of days
Everything else daily.

Casino218 · 07/04/2020 06:41

4 times a year! Jees minging! Why would you wash t shirts after every wear and jeans only 4 times a year. There isn't a force field around your legs you know that repels grime!

Gulsink · 07/04/2020 06:47

About the same as you. Probably average 5-6 washes a week (2 young kids).
Denim should be washed as little as possible.

penisbeakers · 07/04/2020 06:58

Yep. You're grim.
