Part 7 of the decluttering challenge - can you get rid of one item a day?

StealthNinjaMum · 06/03/2019 12:16

Back again!

A group of mumsnetters have been emptying our homes, gradually decluttering our homes by getting rid of one item a day.

We’re very green and like to recycle, sell, give away and sometimes eat our clutter I’m still alive after the 8 year old gherkins.

Newbies are welcome to join us. We just get rid one thing and come back to update everyone on our progress, get support when it gets hard, and suggest new household systems and ways of doing things.

The most exciting thread on mumsnet. In this thread @SandandSea will tell us what she’s going to do with her big plastic sheet…..

Not there yet, but making progress. It’ll look better once the ski stuff is put away. Two bags of clothes ready for the clothing bank.

SandAndSea · 16/03/2019 21:45

Well done, @OublietteBravo ! Keep going!

Nothing out here. One in - one of those mops with the container fixed into it. I'm far too excited about it! I think it might be a game changer! Grin

Sorry to read about your dh, Willow . Good idea to get him to the docs tomorrow. Hope he gets better very soon.

My items today are going to be mop-themed. I think I've got 2 old ones (from memory) and they're going out. I really must tackle my dining room soon too.

SandAndSea · 17/03/2019 15:34

Pleased to write that I actually only had one old mop - it's on its way out now though.

SandAndSea · 17/03/2019 15:35

BTW, if anyone knows how to get old laminate looking clean, without it being slippery, please do let me know.

PurpleFrog · 17/03/2019 15:41

Hmm - I would use hot soapy water and a scrubbing brush. Then soak up the excess water with a mop, and rinse with a mop and clean water.

Dockray · 17/03/2019 15:43

Can I join? I am a terrible hoarder but am trying to stop hanging on to things "just in case". Even once I make the decision to get rid of something it often hangs around for ages. I get overwhelmed if there are too many steps involved- one thing a day seems manageable and if you are on my TIO then I get a daily reminder Smile

Today I have given a toy to DNephew and am sorting a shoebox full of pencils and little plastic toys. Pencils will go to DD's art box. Little toys in the recycling.

Willow, hope your DH feels better soon. Your username made me smile as it is DB's favourite song.

SandAndSea · 17/03/2019 18:47

Thanks, @PurpleFrog. The laminate is quite old so I'm not sure if it's up to hot water and scrubbing. I might try it in a small area though, thank you.

Welcome, @Dockray! It sounds like you've made a good start. Star

Willow, your poor DH and poor you having to keep it all together.
I have been organising today. I decided that the cupboard I had commandeered for my scouting stuff was just not going to work for what I wanted to put in it so I have decided to put items in the cupboard under the stairs. We had it redone a few years ago and had shelving put around the top. I have been collecting plastic tubs from work and they are perfect for putting my little bits and bobs into.
I have also used 4 in my deep baking drawer which I had a little rejig of moving cake cases and biscuit cutters into the drawer with all the other baking tins etc.
I have managed to get my wheely trolley out of the hallway and into the cupboard and the same with our flag which used to reside in my wardrobe (messily).
I haven’t thrown away mountains of stuff, probably less than a bin bag full and most of that is recycling but I have created a 6-8” space on the bookcase which can now accommodate the album I made DH buy to store all the precious memories which were just shoved in a pile.

Gibble1 · 17/03/2019 20:02

Am also currently decluttering half a packet of very elderly pudding rice in the slow cooker and have used up a packet of tea bags and am working my way through the earl grey. 47 tea bags left from this box and then onto the next type of tea. I have given up coffee for lent so am hopeful that I will manage to clear the old stock before Easter. That should give us a little more cupboard space!

SandAndSea · 18/03/2019 20:23

Not much today but I have washed out a bin and bagged up everything for the tip so it's ready to go.

OublietteBravo · 18/03/2019 20:35

I’ve made some more progress in the spare bedroom, but I’m not there yet.

Pixie2015 · 18/03/2019 20:40

I am with you all and decluttering bit by bit toys sorted this weekend and old folders - still buying too much in post Christmas sales !

Peridot1 · 18/03/2019 21:31

Some more towels to my friend today.
And I bagged up old tatty bedding for textile recycling.
One set of superkng good quality bedding bagged up and labelled for charity shop - will take tomorrow.
Washed out a large glass jar with lid - it’s about 18 inches high and a foot wide. Ready for charity shop but need to take on its own otherwise I might break it.
One bottle of date salad dressing gone.

And I cleared the back of my bedroom door. One old tatty belt in the bin. Three old plastic hangers in the bin. Three good hangers in the wardrobe. And one dressy emergency purchase top bought for a party over a year ago and worn once and then just hung on back of door, washed and ready to go to charity shop.

Hoped to get some of he airing cupboard sorted today as shelf that DH ordered arrived but it is missing a few bits so we are back n hold. Will carry on sorting though.

Gibble1 · 18/03/2019 23:40

Got rid of 4 plastic tubs today. Couldn’t manage any more as was out all evening. Am also out every evening this week and am doing a sleepover at a climbing centre this weekend which I signed up to half an hour ago 😱 and it’s with Explorers not my little Cubs!

Hoping those tests show something positive or at least a way forward for your DH willow. Sending Flowers

We've had a busy couple days here, decided to paint the kitchen but realised I don't have a roller! Off to get one later.

Have however accomplished sanding down living room door and the cracks from the mirror frame (another upcycling effort) so hoping the rain holds off enough for me to spray it today.
Also out, lots of DDs old clothes, too stained etc for charity shop so will go to textiles bin tomorrow (tip closed today). An old lamp shade, broken photo frame and changing mat are also out.

Also four bags of general DIY detritus went to the tip yesterday.

Have a good day everyone!

RaspberryBlonde · 19/03/2019 11:50

We finally got rid of some old appliances; council picked them up for recycling. This has been on my to do list for months so pleased to have it sorted.

I made a start on some paperwork yesterday and binned quite a bit. Stalled today though as DS is refusing to sleep other than on me. Normally would try the pram but have to be in for a delivery so am catching up with emails and slowly losing all feeling in my arm!

Thinking of you Willow , I'm not surprised you are finding it tough with everything going on Flowers

gassylady · 19/03/2019 12:13

Has your GP not suggested admission IWill? Sounds like he might benefit, blood tests, chest X-ray and oxygen would all be available

Best wishes to him, Willow.

I'm shredding old paperwork. Will compost it later, I think.

MrsElf · 19/03/2019 21:58

Hope your husband is being mended, willow, and that you’re feeling better as well. Decluttering dogs could take over the thread though!
We’ve been away, so now back to make up for some lost time. 3 kitchen cupboards yesterday, and another shelf of the freezer today. Didn’t actually get rid of much; 2 jars of probably chutney, salad dressing (“keep refrigerated” is not an instruction DH ever notices), opened packet of crackers from Christmas 2016, and a tub of something brown and unidentifiable from the freezer; but now we have a meal plan to use up some of the more ancient goodies, and the fish are enjoying their packet of frozen bloodworms I had forgotten about. The cupboards seem oddly empty, though. I mean, I stirred the BBE 1994 jar of ground cinnamon into the 2010 ground cinnamon, but surely that can’t have made SO MUCH SPACE?! And, more importantly, why didn’t that happen to my wardrobe? nothing to do with finally doing the 4 baskets of ironing in the spare room, oh no

Peridot1 · 19/03/2019 22:02

Sounds like hospital will be the best place for him GreenWillow. Hope he starts to feel better.

Nothing out here today unless you count two baskets returned to HomeSense. But then I bought another new set of towels for the main bathroom.

StealthNinjaMum · 19/03/2019 22:59

I don't think I've ever been away from the thread for this long. My real life is so busy at the moment and I mean that in a good way.

Welcome two kitties.

Gibble Good luck I hate dealing with electronics.

Raspberryblonde apparently some weird, modern people have ways of listening to music that don't involve having 8 boxes of CDs. Don't think it'll catch on.
