New home for the new year - still getting rid of one item a day part 6

StealthNinjaMum · 29/12/2018 10:28

Here we are again!

Little by little a group of mums netters have been decluttering our homes by getting rid of one item a day. Whether we eat it, bin it, recycle it, sell or give it away we are slowly tidying our homes.

Is this the thread where we finish? Probably not

As usual newbies are welcome to join us. We get rid of one thing and come back to update everyone on our progress and get support when it gets hard.

Previous thread is here

I would like to join in too. All the clutter has been getting me down a bit recently and so the last couple of days I have started to clear out, but I need to keep up the positivity. I too have an ebay pile which includes some books from Uni - I took photos over the Summer to post in September when people are starting their courses and still haven't put them online. I do take clothes etc to the charity shop but I used to be good at selling toys on Gumtree/ebay and then using the money for days out with the kids, but I just can't be bothered with the faff so it all ends up piling up.

Great, HumourlessFeminist and just multiply any weeks that you forget by seven Grin

More newbies. Lovely to 'meet' you.

I got up early and decluttered the fridge. All the Xmas food has gone now. I am also going to put three boxes of chocolates and some posh pates into a food bank donation pile. All were presents and I am on a diet. It has taken a long time to get here but I am absolutely ruthless about getting rid of presents. I am also going to throw away 6 gone off bottles of beer that were Xmas presents for stbexh last Christmas.

Morning everyone!

Food Bank is a great idea stealth, I just may well follow suit. I think there's a basket at our local co-op.

I used to have an eBay pile, it's in the bin now haha. Was sick of the sight of it and it would have only brought a few quid. Shame when you think of what it cost to begin with.

I admittedly didn't go through the paperwork box last night, but I did do it at 5am this morning when DD got me up and I was surprisingly awake! Got my 'to shred' pile, the box has keeper stuff in and another full bag of rubbish in the Wheely bin. Will shred later as DD is scared of it.

Also cleared off some rubbish from the bedroom drawer top. Things back in their rightful places and other stuff in the bin. Also found £3 in loose change. Winner.

Tree coming down tomorrow!

Battenburg1978 · 31/12/2018 13:19

Checking in I only managed one of yesterday's goals and back at work today but tonight I will attempt to take a few more photos for Facebook listing - I've decided I won't keep things indefinitely trying to sell them, if they don't sell fairly soon then they can go to a local charity. Also have a large bag for textile recycling - I took one bag to H and M before Christmas to get a voucher then forgot to use the voucher!

I feel guilty about selling on some of DDs baby toys. I took a couple of things out to photograph and of course she then started playing with them again!

Great to read all the other achievements

433challenger · 31/12/2018 13:38

stealth sorry to hear about you and your husband, you sound like you are handling it very rationally. And kudos on keeping up with the decluttering too.
DH and I culled three bin bags full of toys and other bits and bobs on boxing day, plus a baby walker, a baby push along toy and a play house for a toddler. Charity shop was very grateful. I've just gone through the upstairs again and got rid of another bin bag full of toys and books and clothes. Plus 2 large wicker stair baskets. All of these things could have been put up for sale but I haven't the time or the energy and I feel so much better for them being out of the house. I also managed to tidy up, including washing all the windows, upstairs. I have my own version of TOMM that I've been doing for a long time but recently, with DC2 being an excellent sleep dodger, I've been too tired but it's nice to try and get back on it before I go back to work, off maternity, next week.

Battenburg1978 · 31/12/2018 13:40

Can I count finishing the Christmas cheese as getting rid of an item otherwise I did also Throw out the turkey leftovers.

Peregrina · 31/12/2018 13:55

Yes, eating up the cheese and throwing out the turkey leftovers counts.

Today's items include 3 big, shortbread tins and 2 shower caps.

naturistmum · 31/12/2018 14:33

Another newbie here, I started a couple of days ago with my make up drawer. I'd bought a new eyeshadow palette and realised how much nearly empty or broken make up I had. Good clear out and sorted into baskets and now it's all easy to find - just need to start wearing it a bit more now!

I have so much clutter, my DH doesn't throw anything away so its a battle to deal with anything of his. I have drawers full of stuff - I might try and do a magpie sale of DVD box sets I have and other DVD's I'll never watch again. If it's too much faff it's down to the charity shop with it all. We have Netflix and Prime so no need to have physical copies of things and I could really do with repurposing and upcycling the DVD bookcase for the hallway!

MunchMunch · 31/12/2018 14:51

I decluttered some weight watchers books that mil gave me ages ago but I haven't even took them out of the bag let alone read them so I gave her them back this morning.

Apart from the books and a bag of mini creme egg twists I haven't done anything else yet (apart from bringing in shopping!)

Got a bit of recycling to go out but I'm going to dm's for a buffet soon.

Ooh yeah that reminds me I gave her a box of vol au vents so I got rid of those too. Today's been more successful that I first thought! Grin

HundredMileStare · 31/12/2018 14:58

So last night I started to tackle the drawer next to my bed which is frankly just known as "the abyss", nail polishes, empty mascaras, letters from the school, play doh tubs, about 100000 bobbles and kirbys. I've got rid of any obvious waste and now I feel like I need to plan what I'm actually going to use them for. I have 6 of them. I am very good at buying beauty things and ridiculously bad at using them. I feel my resolution next year is to buy 0.

walkingtheplank · 31/12/2018 15:05

I've tidied the hall table drawer resulting in chucking out various pieces of paper and mending a pair of gloves that have needed attention for c. 1year.

Misty9 · 31/12/2018 15:45

Can I join too please? I feel like I'm forever decluttering but it never ends!

Today I sorted through the dc activity/colouring books, art stuff and posted some clothes to be returned (£4 postage!) I used to try and sell stuff but it's not worth the hassle with collection etc so now I just charity shop everything. I do worry that those in most need won't get charity shop stuff though as ime it's middle class mums (like me) who love getting a bargain from them! But there's no other obvious solution Confused

Today’s item was a bag of old clothes that I promised to give to a friend back in the summer. Also the last couple of Christmas presents for her children.

Definitely agree decluttering leftovers counts as that’s really all I’ve managed this week. We’ve had loads of visitors so energy has gone on keeping house tidy. Suspect that there are lots of things lurks no in random places as I found the furniture polish in the plate cupboard last night. Apparently this is closer to where it’s needed according to DH Confused

GreenWillow I need that two item rule, our coat cupboard is exploding!

Keiki · 31/12/2018 20:28

Sorry to hear your news @Stealth. You sound like you'll get through it though.

I've dropped off as still waiting another 10 days for the decorators to come in and finish off. Baby due in 25 days.... stress! Have given up going in the loft for baby stuff so bought a few outfits. Plus Christmas presents in. DP busy decluttering the Bailey's and chocs. Only thing I've thrown out is several dried out nail varnishes.

Whoever mentioned clearing out MILs house, yes, slowly clearing out a grand parents house at the moment. Lots of cleaning products, shampoos, lovely vases, enough socks to last me years and other stuff to come in. Need to declutter my own house to make space.

Gibble1 · 31/12/2018 21:01

Been at work today but DH has been hard at it. Got ragey with DS this morning as he had a load of clothes spread around his bedroom floor and a half eaten bar of chocolate in the wrapper on the floor at 7:00 this morning 😡
Washing is up together. We have eaten more food and I’m decluttering Gin, tonic and chocolate.
Happy Hogmanay to you all xx

Morning all and happy new year!

VERY tired this morning, saw the new year in and went to bed, then DD got up at 5.20Shock

Going to try get out and buy a cushion today, got three yesterday in a mega sale and they were exactly what we'd been looking for for the newly decorated living room. Just need one more.

I'll see what I can do later to counter bring things in haha!

Mokepon · 01/01/2019 08:15

Can I join you too, please?!

We are moving house THIS year Grin but have accumulated so much stuff. I'd like to get rid instead of bringing it all with us.

We made a good start the other day going through paperwork so now have 2 bags to burn as my shredder won't take it.

We took a load of stuff to the tip, so all the rubbish is out of the garage.

I have a bag to get to the charity shop with toys and bits from the house.

Next on the list is DDs room. Need to get rid of clothes that don't fit and sort out toys that have been grown out of.

Need to tackle the shed.

StealthNinjaMum · 01/01/2019 08:25

Thanks 433challenger keiki and everyone else who has been so kind. I am just so angry at the moment, it isn't really me. I just can't wait for stbexh to get out of my house.

Yesterday I did more decluttering with dd1. She quite happily filled a bin with old pictures, craft projects and bits of plastic tat. Her desk had a mountain of stuff on it but now most of its gone she can almost use it as a desk. As we decluttered we chatted loads about what's bothering her (schools, friends, where we'll eventually live) and my New Years resolution is to step up and be a better parent - as well as declutter and decorate the house.

I started last year but lost momentum so back to try again ! I was working on NYE but it was quiet so decluttered my work cupboard. I did have a lucky find though. I am moving back to a job I did a few years ago and I am such a boarder I still had the instructions and supporting info in my cupboard! I also unexpectedly sold an item on e bay.
