New home for the new year - still getting rid of one item a day part 6

Here we are again!

Little by little a group of mums netters have been decluttering our homes by getting rid of one item a day. Whether we eat it, bin it, recycle it, sell or give it away we are slowly tidying our homes.

Is this the thread where we finish? Probably not

As usual newbies are welcome to join us. We get rid of one thing and come back to update everyone on our progress and get support when it gets hard.

Previous thread is here

Wow, good work. I've missed out the middle of this thread as back at work but it's great to share and keep some motivation going.
Have done 2 kitchen cupboards this morning and got rid of some very old sauces/coffee etc. A large carrier bag of rubbish gone.
Also did the top of the fridge freezer which is a dumping area and found an empty shortbread tin, an Easter egg, an unopened pack of burger buns that were about 2 years old but looked totally fine Confused.
Also chucked many of DH's daft body building potions and powders.
Oh, and a wee bit in the bathroom but need to tackle that properly.
Next big job, DDs bedroom. Dreading that.

Well done everyone! You all seem to be doing really well with getting things sorted.

I'm still pretty much starting out with decluttering. I thought I'd done loads in the summer holidays, and actually I really did, we had a skip which I filled completely, as well as doing a few tip runs and getting the scrap metal man to collect broken appliances that were "helpfully" hidden in the shed by dh. But our house has too much stuff for just one sort out. Little and often seems a lot more doable than trying to tackle it all in one go.

I won't be doing much during the week as I just don't have time. Between work and dc there isn't much time to even do tidying/cleaning, let alone decluttering. But Saturday morning is now my allocated decluttering time. This morning I sorted one more box of doom. From that box I managed to get 1 carrier bag for the charity shop, 1 carrier bag of stuff to go back to work and a carrier bag of books/dvds for the charity book shop. So I've taken the charity shop bag in this afternoon. The books/dvds will go tomorrow and the work stuff will go on Monday. I count that as a reasonable hours work Grin

gassylady · 19/01/2019 21:40

Another load of cardboard folded up ready for next tip trip. Umbrella that’s never used for charity bag and will be passing a book I’ve finished onto my MIL.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/01/2019 11:11

Bag of kitchen items to Charity Shop (there were about 9 things so I'm ahead for a week Grin )

Winter jacket belonging to DS now waiting (I bought him a new one)

Mokepon · 20/01/2019 11:13

Box of doom 😂
Started tackling DDs room this morning and making good headway. Got her to take photos of all her craft projects and bin most of them. It's only taken 8 years for some of them!
Taking a wee break to get Ds to nap but realised the curry I split last night was far worse than I thought so will have to deal with that asap. Fuck.

WoogleCone · 20/01/2019 12:52

Hi everyone

Had a busy last few days, DD is sick so spending a lot of time with her underarm. On annual leave now though so whilst she was napping earlier I cleared and cleaned out two kitchen cupboards and three drawers. About half a bin bag of stuff gone, hoping to fill that by the end of the day with other cupboards.
DH sorted a lot of cardboard this morning too.

More to follow hopefully!

Sorry to hear about the sick children - hope they’re feeling better soon! I had a clear out of a couple of boxes on Friday night from the spare room and chucked out some old pencil cases and toiletries and then also sorted some of DD clothes into a charity shop bag...

She’s just had an unexpected nap as we walked home so loaded up the contents of the front of the garage - my charity shop holding area - although some of its been there for 2 years Blush and it’s a whole car boots worth so think I’m on target for January!

abitoflight · 20/01/2019 16:38

DVDs sorted - pile for charity shop but car getting fuller! I'll go this week to charity shop
Few things binned from same drawers
DH out again tonight so will keep on in reception rooms with DD

Decluttered a pile of papers that I found in my wardrobe. It contained lots of instructions for flatpack furniture and receipts from years ago.

Ooh yes greenwillow it's so satisfying getting rid of all that old paperwork 😄

gassylady · 20/01/2019 18:51

More great work and more happy shredders it seems. Good find @StealthNinjaMum - lord knows what finds await when I venture into the wardrobe

StealthNinjaMum · 20/01/2019 19:19

I know gassylady I was just thinking that I wouldn't manage to declutter anything today and it was like the great declutter God left me a present under a jumper!

reallyanothername · 20/01/2019 21:43

Dd wardrobe sorted - that was a big job!

abitoflight · 20/01/2019 22:04

Really yay - I did that too with DD2 - just her dresses but 8 for charity Smile
That's it for a bit though as working first part of next week

Keiki · 20/01/2019 22:10

Thanks Blush not really full of energy at all, mostly knackered and broken but trying to nest! Due in 5 days.

The decorators have been decluttered Grin so I'm trying to clean the carpets and get the furniture back in place (read directing DP moving furniture from a chair!). Tomorrow I will take a second hand useless carpet cleaner to the tip, along with some more cans of paint. Need to go to the post office with a returns parcel and an ebay item. I've added another 4 books to the charity shop bag.

MunchMunch · 20/01/2019 22:51

Not much done the last few days as I've had to take family memebers to their appointments and this morning I woke up with a bit of a sore throat and cough so I haven't done any decluttering today.
I did manage to get a doorstep charity bag out on Friday so at least some old clothes have gone. I still haven't done the tip run but that has to change this week 🤦‍♀️
This week I must sort out DD's monster High dolls and castle to sell and get the charity shop bag to the charity shop. I'm also going to go through the DVD's we've got and maybe take them to cex or charity shop.

GirlfriendInAKorma · 21/01/2019 06:19

Hi all, I was on the previous thread but have had flu so not been doing a great deal recently.

Am back now (having cleared the top of the chest of drawers in my bedroom yesterday and binned, recycled and generally tidied a lot). Also DD (6) sorted a small box of toys she didn't want any more so we took them to the charity shop together.

Keiki due in 5 days? Put your feet up and watch box sets! (But keep posting to tell us about your cute little baby).

I have made a massive cleaning / tidying list. Hopefully stbexh will be out this week or next week. The house is the usual Monday morning mess but it won't take long to tidy it. My new hooks on the playroom door worked as we have 4 kits in drawstring bags hanging waiting for dds to take them so one little area of our life has improved.

Hope everyone is feeling healthier.

@keiki - good luck and keep us all posted on your imminent arrival!!

I've honestly got no idea where all this stuff keeps coming from but I've managed to clear out 4 big black bags worth of toys, books & clothes to the charity shop. And yesterday it seemed my youngest DC grew inches in just one day so I'm going to have to move her up to the next size up of clothes so that's probably another bin bag of clothes to go but I'll donate them to a good bank that gives the clothes to children who need them. This growth spurt means we have less of a backlog of clothes for her to grow into too! Smile

I realise I am getting a bit evangelical about having less but it really is better for my mental health and it makes everything so much easier to clean. I'm also saving money as I have become quite discerning over my purchases.

This is "my" cupboard, the only bit of the house I need just for me. Aside from this and my crochet basket I have downsized to just this. It can still be thinned down further but with two kids and work and housework I can only do a little at a time.

gassylady · 21/01/2019 09:57

Agree Keiki stop nesting have a rest now! Two bags for charity shop today (one from PIL but it’s out of my kitchen so it definitely counts😬)
I also rationalised a few more Christmas decorations when packing them away yesterday
