Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge Part 5

StealthNinjaMum · 01/10/2018 17:18

We’re still here!

For 4 threads a group of mumsnetters have been getting rid of just one thing a day. We’ve been throwing out, selling, recycling and giving our stuff away.

But we're still not finished.

Newbies are always welcome to join us. Just get rid of one thing each day and come back here to discuss your progress and get support when it gets hard.

I have a shredder for my guinea-pigs ( No , I don't shred the guinea-pigs Wink ) for loo-roll tubes to make nice bedding.
So any receipts get cut up with 5-bladed scissors straight into the recycle bin.

I have a bag of clothes and some Christmassy things to recycle (need to be soon)

I would be too scared to put a toilet roll in the shredder, I have got through so many! My current one has been working for about a year and hasn't yet jammed - sadly I think it gives me more joy than anything else in the house.

As usual when I spend time decluttering I neglect the house and it looks a tip. So I got up early and finished wrapping a pile of presents, put the wrapping papers and tags away, and put the presents under the tree which has made a big difference. I also shredded a load of papers from yesterday and found a big bag of old newspapers and leaflets to throw away. I'm now just going to give the house a tidy and probably not do any more decluttering for a couple of days - although annoyingly I am enjoying it and don't want to stop. But mil / fil will be staying over xmas so I need it to be tidy.

One carrier bag full of bubble wrap brought into work today.

SandAndSea · 20/12/2018 18:26

Today's items include an array of papers, envelopes etc, a box (the sort I like to keep) and a dustpan and brush.

Old chess set out today, going to DHs office as they're super quiet this time of year. (It's allowed, the team aren't being CFs lol).

Still going at the crochet. My yarn arm is throbbing now though. Don't want an RSI at Xmas, but also don't want to have to rush out and get a different present if I don't finish it!!

Right, off to work. Have a great day ladies!

RaspberryBlonde · 21/12/2018 09:55

Good l k with crochet Woogle. Shops will be a nightmare so that's probably a good incentive not to need an alternative present!

Like some others am moving from decluttering to chasing ahead of Christmas. Managed to finish a bottle of bubble bath yesterday so that's fine, plus a couple of rolls of wrapping paper gone. Presents are all done now. Annoyingly lots of paper leftover, but some is not too festive so can be used for birthdays too.

StealthNinjaMum · 21/12/2018 10:29

Crocheting sounds like hard work, I hope you get it finished wogglecone

House was tidy yesterday until dd1 decided she wanted to bake some reindeer biscuits (I had bought a kit in Sainsbury's). Flour everywhere but the first time she's done anything like that on her own so it isn't surprising. Anyway I was too tired to clear up last night. Will do that now.

This morning dd1 and I went through some drawers in her room and threw away 2 drawers of stuff and about 20 books. She has a desk which cannot seen below the clutter and she says stuff like 'I can't tidy, I must be a hoarder like daddy' but she actually let me throw away nearly everything we found. There is still a pile of stuff on the desk and I'm not sure how we're going to put it away, maybe it can wait til after xmas as I can't face it now.

SandAndSea · 21/12/2018 11:15

@StealthNinjaMum - Well done to you and DD1! Maybe you need a box to put the desk stuff in?

My house is suddenly coming together after some days of mess and chaos. The sofas are back together and the curtains are mostly back up. The wrapping paper is away with 2 card tubes recycled today.

A load of presents has just left the house.

I've also put up a hook! It's a small thing and yet also huge. I'm feeling strangely accomplished. Grin

The dining room table is almost clear - I've got some admin to do before I can clear it fully. I usually put up a small tree in the dining room but am debating leaving that this year - might just keep to a decorated table and twinkle lights. (I usually start Christmas exhausted so I'm looking for ways to cut down a bit this year.)

I've got bed stripping and laundry going on as I type. I think the kitchen is going to get a good clean soon too. It's all go!

Gibble1 · 21/12/2018 11:32

I have unexpectedly got the day off work and have been asked to swap off Christmas Eve and work Thursday instead so I now have almost a week off.
I’m going to write a list and then start blitzing this midden!
My aim is to get the dining room table clear and then the presents can be wrapped tonight.
We’re out at a bag pack tomorrow so hopefully DH can get on and DS won’t be around to make too much mess!

Keiki · 21/12/2018 12:01

Severely recluttering the house here due to Christmas presents in, needing to buy paint/rollers etc for redecorating now the builders have gone, and making a start on buying bits like nappies and wipes for the baby due in 4ish weeks.

I did throw out some useful plastic tubes, that haven't been used for 2 years, some empty bubble tubes and some large cardboard boxes - from an old telly long since at the tip, wii equipment, and a radiator.

Right, must get back to painting!

StealthNinjaMum · 21/12/2018 12:30

Wow keiki you're busy. When posters talk about decorating I always get really envious as I've said before I spend 95% of the time making my house look less crap and only 5% making it look better! I definitely have plans to get my paintbrushes out in the new year.

You're right @SandandSea I need some boxes - if only I knew someone who could give me a few?

I almost feel embarrassed posting because I have so gone against the spirit of the thread and am possibly Kondoing or Flyladying. A mountain of stuff is going now - in fact I have put 3 big binbags of rubbish in the bath just to get them out of the way - and have another 2 nearly full ones. I set a timer for 15 minutes and went through dressup clothes and arts and crafts with dds (dd2 got a bit bored after a couple of minutes) and put tonnes of stuff in the bin / recycling / charity piles. I think dd1 is starting to get it. I have promised that we will do lots of arts and crafts together later. Dd2 has a playdate so I can spend time with dd1.

A mountain of stuff is going now

I literally love this phrase! Super well done! Star

I've posted some more things for sale. It's all like new, really nice stuff. I think I might end up giving it all away but I'm not giving up yet.

Gibble1 · 21/12/2018 15:20

I have emptied and folded up 5 large bag for life bags. The floor is becoming visible. We must do our wrapping as I know I need DH to print some gifts for friends children’s Christmas presents.

MotherWol · 21/12/2018 20:11

A really big one out of the house yesterday- an empty bike box that’s been taking up space for months that I crushed and fit in the recycling bin. DH had been promising to do it for ages but I just ran out of patience waiting for him to deal with it.

Gibble1 · 21/12/2018 23:09

We have just wrapped most of the Christmas gifts including the stockings. DH has to print some tomorrow but I have used up 7- yes 7! rolls of wrapping paper on that little lot 😁.
I also got rid of 4 mugs and 2 money boxes today so we have a bit more space now.
Sounds like everyone is making good progress though so it’s all good 😀

Gibble1 · 22/12/2018 11:16

3 money boxes, 2 pencil tins and a water bottle being printed today so they will be out shortly.

StealthNinjaMum · 22/12/2018 12:35

Two jugs in the charity shop pile.

Decided, out of the blue, to go to the rubbish dump. It was so quiet it was lovely. I got rid of a video, pvr and a big but broken coffee machine that will leave a huge empty space in my utility room. I'm really pleased. Now just need to buy about 3 presents and I'm done with the shopping.

Sorry dipped out for a bit but have been trying and sometimes succeeding. Took two bags of school stuff back to school and dumped. Gave away a couple of jigsaws and games to various people / school. De cluttered a bag of paperwork re school.

We are finally back in kitchen and putting back kitchen stuff and getting rid of some stuff plus cardboard boxes they were stored in.

What are you crocheting can we know? I like to crochet a bit. I have a big blanket to do. Sometime.

Bowerbird5 · 22/12/2018 15:02

Sons have bought us a set of new pans so not much coming in for Christmas😁Friend and I voted on edible gifts but I did buy her something practical that she wanted too.

As people are feeling the pinch I haven’t received any Christmas gifts from children this year but I am happy about that. One I don’t want parents who are struggling to buy me things and two I don’t have to house another mug😁 I have been invited to a Nativity on Christmas Eve which is the best present!

Gibble1 · 22/12/2018 15:03

Another 2 mugs ordered and printed ready to wrap this evening- at this rate, I will possibly be able to condense another box out of the house this evening!

WoogleCone · 22/12/2018 16:38

Well done evryone, that's some good decluttering!!

I used up one roll of paper today, 3 gifts ready to be given on Monday.

@bowerbird5 it's a really big blanket, pixel granny squares that are tiny (756 of them!!) Which is Minnie mouse for Disney obsessed SIL, finished the bow this afternoon and just got tassles to do now. Have roped DH into cutting the strands (or at least some of them) while I'm at work tonight haha. I hope she likes it!

Have way more wool than I thought too!
