Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge Part 5

StealthNinjaMum · 01/10/2018 17:18

We’re still here!

For 4 threads a group of mumsnetters have been getting rid of just one thing a day. We’ve been throwing out, selling, recycling and giving our stuff away.

But we're still not finished.

Newbies are always welcome to join us. Just get rid of one thing each day and come back here to discuss your progress and get support when it gets hard.

I didn't do anything that I had planned. I did lots of washing and housework instead. I decluttered one pair of dds trousers and also took some bunting off the spare bedroom's walls pulling plaster off while I did it. The spare bedroom used to be dd1s and it had cupcake bunting which she is now too old for so that's going in the charity shop pile.

I can't believe you are still here!!!!!

I will be here till I die lurking around and not achieving much

Gibble, the reason I asked about the sofa cover is that I've noticed it's very hard to find big sofa throws here in Australia. Impossible, actually.

ememem84 · 18/10/2018 21:00

Pair of socks in the bin. Have been wearing them all day and dh just noticed a hole in them. So binned.

SandAndSea · 18/10/2018 22:15

ememem84 - Thanks for the reminder - I'm also wearing a holey sock which I must bin before I go to bed.

Well, I spent over 2 hours - TWO HOURS! - searching the house for my 'in date' card. After going through everything - drawers, pockets, bags etc etc - I finally remembered the bag hiding under the pile of coats on the bannisters. (Will I ever learn?????)

DP was complaining about this issue only a few days ago so he's now doing the 'I told you so' dance.

In my defence, I hadn't put the bag away as it has a holey pocket and I've been debating getting rid of it. What am I saying??! That's no defence at all! I should have just got rid of it!!

Gibble1 · 18/10/2018 23:59

Penelope- ooh really? That must be irritating for you. I wonder why that is?
Today I have just decluttered food ready for camp at the weekend.

Gibble1 · 19/10/2018 00:01

Gah! I keep forgetting to comment on other posts 😳. Fuckitbucket, welcome back!
That picture- hmm. Needs a green room!

KittyB52 · 19/10/2018 09:17

Morning all!

Off to the charity shop with some baby sleep bags which didn’t sell on EBay. Have kept a couple for a friend with twins, so feel happy they are going to be put to good use.

DH asked if I could get him a couple of t shirts in town and I asked him what he had for the charity bag. He said he ‘didnt have time to look’ so I told him when he does find time, he will undoubtedly find a few t-shirts in the wardrobe or airing cupboard that he had forgotten about. Grin

I am also taking a few of my tops and some scarves I no longer wear to charity shop, and I have a voucher from H&M recycling scheme, so am going to look for a new jumper for myself.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 19/10/2018 09:41

Sunny here, makes me more enthusiastic to press on with banishing the scrappier gloves and scarves I drag out of hiding at this time of year.

RaspberryBlonde · 19/10/2018 10:32

Yesterday I went through a couple of cupboards and collected 4(!) disused routers. I have no idea why we still have these, some must be a decade old and have therefore survived two house moves. Will be going to electrical recycling at the dump unless someone here knows a better use for them. A defunct alarm clock is also in the bag.

Sandandsea I have a bag in exactly the same state that I have also rationalised myself into not getting rid of. I have plenty of other bags so I'm not sure what emergency I'm saving it for.

Kitty my DH does this. He currently has 6 suit jackets in the coat cupboard. I'm pretty certain only one is actually used.

fuckitbuckit · 19/10/2018 22:34

I managed to clear the crap from the garden, and put away DC toys in the shed for winter.

Also threw a pair of socks which had a hole in when I did the washing.

Not much but still something.

Gibble1 · 19/10/2018 23:52

My car is completely rammed with stuff for cub camp. I’m hoping that not much of it comes back into the house. However when I do get back, all the sleeping bags and camping gear will be returned to the loft for the winter now as we won’t be camping until next year.

oopslateagain · 20/10/2018 00:02

I sold two things on Facebook marketplace today and they've already been picked up!

A big achievement for me: I went shopping today and did NOT buy candles or second-hand books. I hoard candles and old books. I have half a sideboard full of candles and a spare room with one entire wall devoted to bookshelves. I sniffed some candles but put them back, and I went into the second-hand bookshop and just browsed.

ememem84 · 20/10/2018 07:14

Great progress oops

I did buy two pairs of boots the other day. But I had said I would they’re essentials for winter. Black calf boots (smart ones for work as my old ones were worn to bits) and I treated myself to a new pair of uggs. I have a love hate relationship with these. I love how comfy they are. But hate how ugly. But the comfort. And the warmth. I had my old pair for 8 years and wore them to death. Mostly while on maternity leave last winter. So I bought myself a new pair. My birthday present to myself.

I am going to sell two pairs of barely worn trainers and a pair of lk Bennett heels once I get them from storage.

CupoBlood · 20/10/2018 08:00

@oopslateagain fb selling I need to start that - any tips?

Well done everyone. I recently started chucking holey socks at the end of the day and it's made a difference. Feels quite nice like I've cheated on washing

oopslateagain · 20/10/2018 13:04

CupoBlood (love your name Grin) I just went to Facebook Marketplace and put up rubbish photos and a very short description, if you look at the other things there you'll see what people sell. It's a weird and wonderful place sometimes. You can choose what groups it will list your items on - I restricted to the very local area but you can make it wider if you like.

It's the first time I've used it and half the things I listed have now gone, so it seems like a good'un.

Bowerbird5 · 20/10/2018 14:37

Super chucking!
I have been busy at work so only put out recycling for last two days but will be taking several puzzles to be passed on to the local hospice.

CupoBlood · 20/10/2018 18:36

Thx will give it a whirl!

PawneeParksDept · 21/10/2018 01:48

The Friends Boxset still lurks 👀

Bowerbird5 · 21/10/2018 08:23

Sock. Found a sock of DDs with a large hole 😄

KittyB52 · 21/10/2018 13:51

DH put together a bag of shirts to go to the charity shop - whee!
I am hoping to have sold a few craft things on Ebay by this evening and am about to get some more bits listed today.
And I put a load of cardboard and recycling in the blue bin earlier.

StealthNinjaMum · 21/10/2018 16:53

Raspberry blonde I've got rid of 2 or 3 routers this year at the dump. I realised that they were sitting in their usual position - not looking like clutter - but not plugged in as dh had moved the new routers to different places.

I haven't really done much since Thursday. Mainly sorting papers out, shredding, recycling so not very satisfying. I also found another 4 or 5 children's picture books for the pile. I have just screamed at dh and dds to go to the park (they looked at me scared and went) because they have made such a mess this weekend. I might stick keys in the doors so they can't come back in! Obviously half-term has started so I have a million bits of washing to do and book bags and homework and millions of school forms and a pile of a couple of hundred lego cards that's just been knocked over after I spent hours putting them in order.

Anyway I am going to tidy the hall, kitchen and dining room as they're the worst areas and send them out for dinner.

OP posts:
WhenDoISleep · 22/10/2018 10:55

Things have been moving slowly here - last week I sorted an area in the living room, got rid of various bits from the DC (old comics, silly magazine toys etc.), can see a definite improvement and floor space. Yesterday I sorted an area in the kitchen and have reclaimed a significant amount of space which I have now filled with bags to go to charity and eBay items which are all currently listed. Am planning on sorting the other side of the living room this week, which is the children's play area.

On the other hand, the renovation of the spare room has ground to a halt as we need an electrician and joiner to do some work in there, and finding anyone to quote let alone do the work his side of Christmas is a struggle. We also discovered a major leak from our shower over the weekend, and I am desperately trying to find a plumber who can come and look at it this week, but nobody is interested in the work as they are all booked up for weeks. It must have been slowly leaking for weeks/months, and we now have damage to 3 rooms.

StealthNinjaMum · 22/10/2018 15:45

WhendoIsleep oh now that's awful. I hope you can find someone to fix the leak. How awful, especially as you'll want a nice house before Christmas. Other than that it sounds like you are making progress.

House is tidy again. Dds didn't want to go to dinner without me yesterday so they tidied under my supervision. Today we're staying in waiting for xmas present deliveries and doing arts and craft stuff. I have shown them the new regime and they seem to want to be tidy. I have also been in the room of doom and have a plastic toy I am considering chucking out. So not much any progress. I can't spend too long in the room of doom because that's where the xmas presents are kept.

OP posts:
LivingDeadGirlUK · 22/10/2018 15:52

great thread, house is so cluttered and we only moved in 2 months ago!

I want to tackle the breakfast bar, aka random crap dumpling ground, first.

WhenDoISleep · 22/10/2018 16:23

Thanks stealth. I was finally beginning to see some good progress - than this happens. Finally found someone who can come around tomorrow re the leak (actually 2, one in each bathroom), so will see what happens then.

Those who use Facebook Marketplace - I put 2 items up this morning after reading about it on this thread. I have had someone message me about one of the items, but they can't collect before the end of the week or next week? The end of the week likely won't work for me, next week would be fine though. What's the protocol here? Do I say that's fine and hold the item? Do I end the listing? Slightly complicated by having it listed on eBay as well with a promo fee which I would lose if I end it on there. No really sure what to do as I have never used Facebook Marketplace before.
