Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge Part 5

StealthNinjaMum · 01/10/2018 17:18

We’re still here!

For 4 threads a group of mumsnetters have been getting rid of just one thing a day. We’ve been throwing out, selling, recycling and giving our stuff away.

But we're still not finished.

Newbies are always welcome to join us. Just get rid of one thing each day and come back here to discuss your progress and get support when it gets hard.

Sandandsea you are a genius. It had honestly never occurred to me that books can be bought again if really needed! May help me to get rid of some.

Items for today:

  • parcel of unsuitable clothes bought online returned
  • bit of paperwork sorted and some recycled
  • took all my maternity clothes out of the wardrobe. They can go away with the newborn baby clothes for now and gives me a bit more space.
StealthNinjaMum · 17/10/2018 13:09

When I drop them off at my favourite charity shop I'll avoid shopping in it for a few weeks so I can't buy them again!

@RaspberryBlonde - So glad it's useful.

I've just cleared my handwashing which has been hanging around for weeks.

I have also cleaned my sink. I thought I'd give 'scrubbing with metal foil' a try and it's brought it up lovely! There were previously tiny paint splashes across it which I just couldn't get off but even they've come off now!

StealthNinjaMum · 17/10/2018 14:57

Finished arts, crafts, stationery stuff before my deadline. Everything has a home and a label. All kits have been gone through. Lots of bits are tidied into boxes. I have some empty storage shelves and empty boxes. Lots of pens thrown away. Will continue to move things to the correct place in the house now and direct dc and dh there. I also threw out some old videos - I'd recorded things like Twin Peaks on. I now have a pile of videos from the 1980s . They probably have music on them like Christmas TOTPs and Live Aid. I do think they might be rare (obviously valueless) but interesting to put on youtube. I don't know how to record off a video player or put something on youtube so I guess I'll keep them for another 30 years.......

Delicious, left over, home-made soup for lunch.

Cleared the weeds on the patio whilst hanging out washing.

An apron has gone to the clothes recycling bin. (It's been hanging, unseen, on a door knob in my kitchen for ages, possibly since last Christmas. It was really tatty too. I have no clue how I didn't see this sooner.)

SandAndSea · 17/10/2018 15:26

Wow, Stealth , you've done really well with all that craft stuff. Well done! StarBrewCake

Now, about those videos...

fuckitbuckit · 17/10/2018 16:00

Oh @Gibble1 you're still here too!!

Once I'm home I'm going to go through the wardrobes and do an eBay pile of old clothes. I can't promise I'll actually put them up for sale yet though

I need to weed the garden, cut the grass and clear random bits of plastic that seem to have appeared from nowhere. That can wait until we have a few dry days in a row so the grass isn't a muddy puddle of shite.

Also on the list is under stairs cupboard, kitchen boiler cupboard, some odd bits of DIY and a proper spring clean, this house needs completely gutting out from top to bottom. Then I can start on the lists for Christmas, new furniture and paint colours/wallpaper samples.

PawneeParksDept · 17/10/2018 16:37

All my many bags went to the charity shop today, except for the Friends Boxset which lingers on as I ended up with no room to take it. Makes me think of a Toy Story toy that has dodged being sent away

PawneeParksDept · 17/10/2018 16:38

@StealthNinjaMum there's a device you can buy which converts all old tapes to digital I can probably find an example on line if you're interested ?

SandAndSea · 17/10/2018 16:58

The good news is that I decided to tackle one of my boxes of doom.

The bad news is that I'm now in clutter hell!

I have managed to recycle and shred quite a few papers (receipts, flyers, notes, all sorts). I have also filed a couple of recipes. But God help me, the rest is a nightmare!! It's going to take me hours and hours. This is what I've been avoiding.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 17/10/2018 17:17

This afternoon read through (and chucked most of) a pile of old letters and cards. Can't get maudlin on tea and squash, can you.

Cupoteap · 17/10/2018 17:57

I'm back again trying to start- I often turn up part way through a thread and post for a couple of days and then disappear

This time it is defo different

It's great through and seeing the progress you are all making.

I've got rid of some kid clothes, shoes, a bag to the charity shop and the shoe bin.

Bowerbird5 · 17/10/2018 19:24

Lit the fire 🔥 with some paper work today sorted some books yesterday. I have a whole lot for work but need to move them and don’t want to bring them back here so sorted them there and will drop them off at charity shop on the way home.

I put the baking stuff out!
Going to sort tins tonight.

ememem84 · 17/10/2018 20:51

Nothing today.

But tomorrow is a new day

PawneeParksDept · 17/10/2018 20:56

@SandAndSea Still three of the BOD waiting for me when I can steel myself

Gibble1 · 17/10/2018 22:29

I’ve written out 6 envelopes and they are ready to post 6 badge swaps tomorrow. Have dug out a book for my friend which I will deliver tomorrow.
Folded a pile of washing and have a pile of towels to fold and put away shortly.
Recycling day tomorrow so will hopefully manage to get some stuff out to recycling tonight.
House is still clean downstairs but my car is full to the brim.
I have promised some of DS’s old cadet gear to another parent so need to collate it all.
You’re all doing very well- keep on pushing against the tide!

ememem84 · 18/10/2018 07:50

Another day off with ds. He’s not well still so I may be able to get things done today. May have a bash at his toys. There are things he hasn’t played with since he was a newborn (he’s 1 now)

StealthNinjaMum · 18/10/2018 10:12

pawneeparksdept thank you I just had a google for ways of converting VHS to digital, I didn't know why I didn't think of it earlier. In an earlier thread I started to convert my cassettes to digital too but my laptop got full. I need to declutter my laptop so I can give it to dd and then buy a new one but that involves time and finding all the software and I always want to make a visible difference to the house first. My next project is to 'finish' the Room of Doom before Christmas and that's where the software is so I think it'll be part of that.

So today I am going to do more in the room of doom, perhaps file/ shred some paperwork.

ememem84 sorry to hear about ds, hope he's ok.

cupoteap this time you can finish!

Pair of black trousers in the charity shop bag

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/10/2018 12:10

One of those "Hmm wonder why the vacuum isn't picking up" days that ends with with emptying the waste compartment , the filter , cutting DD hair off the beater brush then finding out the long tube is blocked with paper -and more hair.
So , it's working.

I have clothes to recycle , will try to get to the Charity Sop tomorrow.
I'm waiting in for the DW repairer and doing odd de-cluttering .
Had a sort out of the pantry, put things in recycle and found a manky pizza base that DS had put there (ok he'd sealed the bag with kwick-clips but it wasn't airtight) .

Cupoteap · 18/10/2018 12:59

Thanks stealth.

Sitting at the walk-in waiting to be seen, but even now I have picked up something to leave the house and never return- some old AD to hand in at the chemist on my way home!

Last night I emptied a bedside table and got rid of some bits.

This is it!

SandAndSea · 18/10/2018 18:26

I went out today especially to buy a certain thing and tried to pay with an out of date card!! It was a complete waste of time and all because I didn't like to cut it up weeks ago - for NO good reason!!

Today's items:

That card
2 CDs
More receipts, papers, a birthday card, etc.

PawneeParksDept · 18/10/2018 18:29

I managed to declutter an unfilled prescription into the bin
