Really quiet fan?

Can anyone recommend a very quiet fan? Am so fed up of the whirry old white circular one I take from room to room in this weather. Working in a basement office I have to put up with the noise from them at work too, so have decided it’s time to splash out a little on a decent one for home use.
I had a look at a few which said they were quiet but that only seemed to be on the lowest setting. I’d like decent a amount of air and not much noise.

We can see this thread is a few years old so some of the suggestions may be out of stock, but we’ve recently updated our best tower fan and best pedestal fan pages if you’re looking for something quiet to keep you cool this summer.

We also have guides to the best handheld fan and best desk fan too, if you’re looking for something more compact and budget-friendly. We hope they help.

I have just bought the dyson desk fan am06 after similar problems and it’s really quiet but very expensive! It’s great being able to lie in bed and turn it up and down with the remote control.

Nanasueathome · 15/07/2018 17:25

Dyson are quiet ...but you can still hear them
Although there is no whirly thing going round

mycatisfatter · 15/07/2018 17:33

I hate our Dyson fan. It’s shite

ChoccyJules · 15/07/2018 22:37

Why is that, cat?

It's just rubbish. It doesn't cool the room as well as the metal fans we have and those were about £50 each rather than £300

Murinae · 15/07/2018 23:18

Mine is blasting me with cool air now while I’m lying on the bed. I like it though as I said only had it a few days. I like the remote control and being able to turn it up and down from bed. The timer function is quite good too. It’s really quiet even on the higher levels though you can still hear the air moving. I’ve been sleeping good with it on 2
these past few nights.

Dyson fans. My husband insists on sleeping with fan on and I can't sleep with the noise.

I bought him a large Dyson fan and although it's not silent it is very quiet.

ChoccyJules · 16/07/2018 15:07

Dyson seem highly rated for quietness. So expensive though I guess you get what you pay for.
It’s useful to know that a PP feels they are still quiet at higher speeds.

I've just ordered a tiny clip on fan from amazon so I'm watching with interest just in case it's noisy!

mycatisfatter · 16/07/2018 16:14

There was a segment on tv a few weeks ago about whether Dyson fans were quieter. I'll try and find the link. It was either BBC or ITV

N0tfinished · 16/07/2018 16:44

We have an old tower fan from Tesco & it's pretty quiet. I can sleep with it & I usually struggle with those kinds of noises

ChoccyJules · 16/07/2018 20:51

I had a heat-induced meltdown (!) and ordered one I found good reviews for, at a third of the Dyson price. Hope it's as good as they all say. This: MeacoFan 1056 Air Circulator. It's an interesting look...

Got mine from Sainsbury for my bedroom. Doesn't keep me awake or wake me up during the night. Cheap too.

Murinae · 16/07/2018 21:29

@ChoccyJules that looks interesting. Let us know if it’s good! My dyson was “only” £209 so not quite a third of the price but still much cheaper. I have a Maeco dehumidifier and that works well so I think they are a good company. I hadn’t seen that model advertised anywhere when I was looking a few weeks ago or I probably would have gone for it too.

Ontheboardwalk · 16/07/2018 21:42

Dyson fans are rubbish. Really quiet at the lowest settings and rubbish. Crank it up past 4 and it’s still rubbish and really loud.

I went back to my old tower fan

Ontheboardwalk · 16/07/2018 21:47

I was disappointed at how cheap looking the Dyson fan was as well.

I got the long one for the bedroom. On the floor most of it was blowing under the bed. On a cabinet it was all blowing above the bed. Ended up putting it on piles of paper. It was still rubbish

ChoccyJules · 16/07/2018 23:02

If this is good I may get one for upstairs, still cheaper than one Dyson. Will report back.

@ChoccyJules I'm desperate to buy a decent fan. How are you getting on with your new one?

Aridane · 24/07/2018 11:21

Dyson - and it looks nice!

Aridane · 24/07/2018 11:22

(but on the higher settings it is not quiet as the air blasts out )

ChoccyJules · 24/07/2018 16:15

@LittleTipple it arrived yesterday and I have had fun playing with the remote control. It’s much bigger, or rather bulkier than I expected but it looks a bit like a retro robot when it swivels (like the one from Hitchhikers).
The air is strong even at setting 1 and it is quiet...not silent obviously but better than the old round ones. A different pitch of sound as well, to get used to. Last night I set it to go off after an hour and fell asleep with it on.
The remote can turn off the display lights and it can be set to eco which responds to temperature - if I had it on that today it would switch to setting 10!
So for £100 I think it's good, if a bit bulky and probably as quiet as they get.

@ChoccyJules Good to hear in general you're pleased with it. The reviews seem good. Only thing is I can't find any in stock. Where did you get it?

ChoccyJules · 24/07/2018 16:45

From Meaco itself. They said pre-order for the 26th but then more came into stock this weekend so mine was a bit quicker.
