Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge: Part 4

StealthNinjaMum · 06/07/2018 14:14

And the decluttering continues…

For 3,000 posts we have been slowly transforming our homes from hovels to palaces.

We’re not quite there yet some of us are further than others but we won’t give up until we have a decluttered existence.

We just get rid of one thing a day and report back to showoff for support and to be told off when we’re naughty and bring more clutter back into our homes, gardens, sheds, garages.

As ever newbies are welcome to join us.

Ok so yesterday I actually pulled myself together and sorted out the games consoles/games and then sorted out the cutlery drawer.

I'm planning on doing the small.hall cupboard today and will hopefully find the post box keys.

I actually feel much happier. Now I've made as start .

I have an issue with chucking shoes away though. I think oh I'll keep them for gardening in or ill keep them for standing in a field.watching ds play football.

I've got some knee length bootsb that i've not worn for about 6 years but they were expensive I still like them but they are just not the right look. Do i get id? Or keep them just in case they come.back into fashion.
How many pairs of old shitty shoes does one person need?

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 31/07/2018 09:35

blank are they in good condition? I kept boots for that reason and then when I went to wear them again (10 years later!) realised they were scuffed on the front, the heel was going and actually weren't great condition so I put them in a recycling bank. If they are in good condition and you think you will wear again box up and store then come back to them in winter or a few months time you might feel differently.

sandgrown · 31/07/2018 09:42

I have bagged up five pairs of shoes to take to recycling today and thrown out a big bag of old receipts . Going to try an get back.on track with something every day. The council are picking up our old suite and a coffee table today which I hope they will recycle. We offered them free to anyone who could collect but no takers despite the suite being leather and in decent condition.

lljkk · 31/07/2018 10:43

I tried to deliver something yesterday (decluttering, honest!). Failed to find the house.
Studied map better, tried again, delivered successfully today.
Got home... no phone! Had started chucking it down, whiz down in car, my phone is lying in driveway of house where I delivered the stuff (!)

I think I'm having a dozey few days. Blush

grumpypug · 31/07/2018 11:02

Had a lovely day off yesterday - went out with my family Smile

Back on it today. Going to have a tidy up of the kitchen / dining room. I've already done washing and ironing and tidied the areas I started at the weekend

Hi Irina, just filled in the survey and there wasn't space to add comments, so thought I'd do it here. Currently outgrown clothes are kept for our next child, but after that I'd anticipate selling or donating them - there isn't space on the survey to specify what you plan to do in future. Also nursery clothes get very stained so they're usually donated back to nursery once they're outgrown for them to use as spares, but it's not clear whether the survey would consider this to be donating or discarding.

In general I'd agree that it should be easier to recycle stained textiles that aren't suitable for wear anymore, and that secondhand clothes are a good choice, particularly for messy play.

Have a charity bag on the go with 20+ of my items and a few jeans of OH that are barely worn as he bought the wrong size Hmm
Have snuck in a cuddly toy that we won from the school fair the other week.
OH has a few face/beard creams/man smelly things all with a tiny amount in. I’ve asked him to use them up but no progress. I’m torn whether to chuck them or wait till they get used.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 31/07/2018 17:58

Today I have listed another 40 things on eBay. Total sold amount in last 2 weeks £125 which I'm very pleased with just need to package it all. At the moment have 78 things listed. Will try doing some more tonight.

Pile of encylopedias, few random toys, 2 puzzles, pair if slippers, cushion and a dolls bath in the charity shop pile.

Tidied up Today, keeping my lounge clear and polished is making me very happy! Love the smell of polish!

Tomorrow I'm taking parcels to drop off point, and might tackle a drawer in the kitchen.

lljkk · 31/07/2018 20:54

bloody hell, 40! And here I was pleased with my 12 listings done on Sunday (one of which sold today). Big delivery of scrap metal to tip tomorrow, too.

PurpleFrog · 31/07/2018 22:59

I have no idea how you manage to list 40 items in one day! I think the only time I ever managed that was selling individual issues of comics which required minimal description. Actually, I rarely have any more than 10 items on the go at any one time - I find it stressful to have to package up more than 2 or 3 items at one go.

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 31/07/2018 23:43

lljkk glad you got your phone back! That was lucky!

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 31/07/2018 23:44

all of the boys if it was me, I'd give him an ultimatum of say a week or a fortnight to use them up then they go in the bin.

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 31/07/2018 23:47

Mega work day here, not long finished so haven't managed to do anything in the house but I did manage to drop the bag of expired meds at a chemists so it's out of the way and I also cleared my handbag and work bag of all old receipts, shopping lists and random notes and shredded them (quite a pile, several weeks worth Blush) while I was waiting for stuff to happen at work. I also found a missing lipstick and a voucher I can use so that's a bonus Grin

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/08/2018 01:58

Out: 2 blue baby vests from when my son was born nearly 16 years ago....I've had to put them in a sandwich bag as the original packaging looked so manky. No idea what was on it but the vests are perfect.

Blankscreen · 01/08/2018 08:47

This thread is inspiring me.

Sorted 3 bags of stuff for charity shop. Contemplated selling it but just can't be bothered with sitting in the house any longer so it's going today.

Taking a broken slide and bin to the tip too.

GirlfriendInAKorma · 01/08/2018 08:56

Out over the weekend / this week:
Stashes of paper (letters, kids stuff, magazines) all sorted through and got rid of the rubbish.
Old washable nappies that my youngest has grown out of
Few clothes that my youngest doesn't like and won't wear (I wondered why I was hanging on to them)
Few bits that we had been trying to sell but don't seem to shift so they have gone to charity.
An absolute shed load of spices from a stash that my mum brought to our house but every single one was out of date. The oldest one was from 1988. I kid you not. We had a pot of mixed spices that was old enough to vote....

Nofilter · 01/08/2018 09:50

Moving day aghhhh!

GirlfriendInAKorma · 01/08/2018 10:38

Good luck @Nofilter !

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 01/08/2018 10:52

Hope it all goes well nofilter and hopefully you have less stuff to move than before you started on the threads!

ginakorma that made me laugh. I must do my spice cupboard soon and see what's lurking!

Nofilter · 01/08/2018 12:30

Thanks guys!! We have probably 30 bin bags left plus a healthy fund sat in Paypal from things I've sold (almost £2k). I'll be spending this very wisely on horse stuff!!

The BEST thread ever xx

Nofilter · 01/08/2018 12:30

*less not left!

Nofilter · 01/08/2018 12:31

Oh a quick one - those who are saying 40 listings sounds like a lot - do you use the "sell one like this" function on Ebay? Saves doing half the work xx

PurpleFrog · 01/08/2018 12:54

Well done Nofilter!

I have used the "sell one like this" function. I have come to grief before with some of the settings when I have used this on someone else's listing. It preset things that I didn't notice at the time.

I always use it on my own listings if appropriate - but mine rarely seem to be similar enough to make full use of it.

I think being too much of a perfectionist is what really slows me down with eBay listings. Sad

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 01/08/2018 16:44

I do a lot of copying and pasting on eBay listings and use the sell one like this. So the 40 were a combo of t-shirts (just changed size but did them in batches of same ones) and a few busy books. So wrote a generic description and just took photos. In my description it says see photo for condition/details. I want them gone so just doing as quick as possible 😂 the fact I've listed over 40 of my t-shirts and still have 3 drawers full shows just how many clothes we have....

Took 19 parcels to myhermes. Sold something on schpock so that needs to go to post office. Dd1 Old trainers in clothes recycling pile. Did buy a new pair (but resisted pester power from dd2 who loved a pair of shoes and really wanted them. They were nice but she doesn't need them!)
