Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge: Part 4

StealthNinjaMum · 06/07/2018 14:14

And the decluttering continues…

For 3,000 posts we have been slowly transforming our homes from hovels to palaces.

We’re not quite there yet some of us are further than others but we won’t give up until we have a decluttered existence.

We just get rid of one thing a day and report back to showoff for support and to be told off when we’re naughty and bring more clutter back into our homes, gardens, sheds, garages.

As ever newbies are welcome to join us.

I am in the office today as promised. At least this is decluttering that I can do sitting down!
It's full of baskets of crap; I'm going to see how many baskets I can get down to. I'm starting with four plus 3 boxes of paper (filing, shredding, recycling), plus a bin, 3 trays and a foot high pile on my desk. That's a total of 12. I'll come back with what I get down to. Smile

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/10/2018 04:25

The big thing I was selling has been collected!

Lemontwist · 01/10/2018 09:28

Just had an item collected that I put on a local selling site. Got to parcel up a couple of things now that sold on ebay last night and get them to the post office.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 01/10/2018 09:46

I save bubble wrap too! I am a terror for stockpiling fripperies for gift wrapping. There comes a point at which I should say "I have enough put by", (especially as we have cut back on present exchanging generally since friends' children hit 18 and other people move away and lose touch).

When DD graduated and moved back home, she brought back quite a lot of stuff that went straight up into the loft. It's supposed to be useful ie save money when she moves back out but it takes up a lot of space and I'd like her to sort through it.

hedgehogboots · 01/10/2018 13:17

I’m so late to the party but hello!Smile I’m 80% of my way through ducluttering my house. Just got loads of letters and magazines to cut up for my blue bin as I don’t have a shredder. I’ve got a feeling it’s going to take me a few days! It’s so good to be able to walk around my entire house without bumping into anything and knowing where everything is. I’ve got mounds of bubble wrap and wrapping paper and no idea how to store it thoughBlush I keep the bubble wrap for when I move and need to transport my computers/breakables. Sold most of DD’s baby clothes on eBay still got a fair few bits to get through. She’s had more clothes in 4 years than I’ve had in my life timeGrin

SandAndSea · 01/10/2018 13:56

Welcome, @hedgehogboots !

SandAndSea · 01/10/2018 15:37

Done a tip run. Got rid of several bags of garden waste and various odds and sods - a broken chopping board, kitchen knives, batteries etc.

I haven't been on for two days and it feels like ages.

I have created a new thread.

Welcome lemontwist lovely to 'meet' you. I think most of us have hoarder husbands. It sounds like you've started well.

OP posts:
StealthNinjaMum · 01/10/2018 17:51

Welcome hedgehogboots, better late than never!

I have no bubblewrap and have never hoarded any. Should I be ashamed? I'm clearly not a very good hoarder.

OP posts:
SandAndSea · 01/10/2018 18:33

I've emptied out a chest of drawers which I want to sell. Unfortunately, I don't have anywhere sorted out yet to put all the bits and bobs so it's a bit of a mess. Some of it just needs binning/recycling but I'm undecided atm.

I'm going to walk slowly away from it and pretend it's not there.

SandAndSea · 01/10/2018 18:44

It's OK, @StealthNinjaMum , the boxes make up for it. Smile

StealthNinjaMum · 01/10/2018 18:46

sandandsea the things I took from the chest of drawers of doom last week don't have a proper home yet. They currently live on the stairs where dh will trip on them. There are bags of diy stuff, stationery and they have been joined by homeless sewing stuff and some bottles of alcohol bought as Christmas presents.

OP posts:
StealthNinjaMum · 01/10/2018 18:48

Yes the boxes make me a good hoarder

It's just a shame I've thrown so many away.

OP posts:
SandAndSea · 01/10/2018 20:48

@StealthNinjaMum - I'm glad I'm not the only one with a Drawers of Doom situation. That said, it's not good, is it? I think we probably need to give ourselves a good talking to.

StealthNinjaMum · 01/10/2018 20:53

@sandAndsea well at least we're doing something about it. My house is getting better every day but I never finish a job so I get bored.

Hmmm, tomorrow I will find homes for the stuff on the stairs. Also I will take four bags of stuff to a charity shop. Will report back.

OP posts:
SandAndSea · 01/10/2018 20:59

@StealthNinjaMum - Mine too (is getting better every day). It feels so good!! Grin

GirlfriendInAKorma · 01/10/2018 21:03

Today - bad of old dressing up outfits to charity shop. :)

Have a huge pile of books to go through too - no space on shelves - and many books that haven't been touched in a long time...

ememem84 · 02/10/2018 08:55

Hello! I keep dropping off the thread. Obviously not decluttering enough to keep up!

In the last week or so since I posted I’ve:

  • sorted our mountain of paperwork binned all the envelopes and shredded everything unnecessary
  • sold a few more bits on eBay and posted out
  • finished beauty products
  • ditched a few old minging beauty products
  • taken hand cream, teabags, and a couple of cups to work
  • unpackaged a load of gift boxes (white co beauty stuff jo Malone stuff etc) and have ditched the packaging
  • finished a bottle of gin.

The MASSIVE declutter will happen soon. Dh and I are so so close to buying our new house - we complete either Friday or next week or the week after. We need to then:

  • get the stuff from our apartment out of storage
  • remove all of our stuff from my parents house (where we’re staying currently)
  • get al of my old stuff out of dparents loft
  • get all of dh’s old stuff out of fils loft and garage.
  • sort it, keep it, chuck it, sell it, charity shop it as applicable.
StealthNinjaMum · 02/10/2018 09:30

ememem84 you've done loads. We've got a new thread now so come and join us on that.

Good luck with moving, it's such a lovely opportunity to sort through things and make your house perfect - without two tonnes of clutter!

This is so inspiring. Tackling our kitchen cupboard where somehow everything festive gets stockpiled. Wish me luck.
