Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge: Part 3: Are we nearly there yet?

StealthNinjaMum · 09/05/2018 08:45

For 2000 posts a group of messy mumsnetters have been chucking out, selling, recycling and cooking weird cakes.

Are we free of clutter yet? Sadly not.

Thankfully we're here to get support and be told off when we have a relapse and bring more clutter into the house, garages, sheds, gardens.

Newbies are welcome to join us, it's easy we literally just get rid of one thing a day and report back.

Wow @carpet that looks amazing! You must feel so satisfied just looking at it Grin That's going to be my go to pic when I'm struggling, although realistically my house will never look like that!! Blush

GreyCloudsToday · 14/06/2018 17:07

Wow, impressive haul today Carpet! I've a couple of cushions to make too when the bed frame gets painted--decluttering the fabric stash!

IHateYourCarpet · 14/06/2018 17:38

Thanks Buffy! I'm not going to lie, sometimes I just go and stand in there and admire the lack of well, STUFF Grin it's probably the only room in the house that'll ever be that clutter free, but it's something to aspire to.

Grey haha! We'll need to compare cushions!

I'm off to Bookers to load up on chocolate clutter. But that doesn't count.

Gibble1 · 14/06/2018 17:41

Wow at that room!
DD keeps appearing with more stuff to put in the bins.

NCPuffin · 14/06/2018 18:12

Finally got rid of a bump band I ordered online and had been meaning to return for two weeks. So that's two fewer plastic bags floating around. Did pick up DH's anniversary gift to me up from the post office, but I think it still counts!

TwoSweetenersImBitterEnough · 14/06/2018 18:16

I've got rid of a few clothes to the charity shop. Sold loads on eBay. Been through DS's toys and chucked a load out. Ive minimised my own wardrobe and drawers. Currently using up loads and loads and loads of beauty products (not buying anything else until I've completely ran out!!). All in all the bedrooms are pretty clear and ready to go. I'm going to decorate before buying new furniture.

So I have got the decor for my bedroom sorted out, started painting and the wallpaper has been delivered. Just waiting for a plasterer to come and fill in the cracks in one of the corners.

With toddler DS's room I'm wanting to do a navy feature wall. Am I completely kidding myself to think that a toddler wouldn't rip down wallpaper? He would, wouldn't he? If so, what could I do on that wall to add some sort of depth and texture so it's not just all painted? I don't want it to look like a hospital ward Sad the rest of the walls will be painted grey BTW. I was looking at navy wallpaper which had silver geometric designs. How could I replicate that with paint?

IHateYourCarpet · 14/06/2018 19:11

Post a picture of the sort of thing you're thinking of two? I'm sure we can think of something!

IHateYourCarpet · 14/06/2018 19:14

Something like this would be really easy, but a bit time consuming. All you need is a to paint the wall navy, get some masking tape and mark out the chevron pattern, then go over it with a can of silver spray paint.

DIY Removable Geometric Triangle Wall Sticker PVC Decals Home Window Door Decor rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F122818876819

Another idea Two, may be a bit more toddler friendly!

TwoSweetenersImBitterEnough · 14/06/2018 19:31

This kind of think but with the silver tones instead of gold. I have looked at stickers, found some grey stars (the room has a star theme anyway) but I think he would pick them off too. Unless I just put them high up? Or would that look silly Sad Loving the spray paint idea though, I may be able to find some stencils for a basic pattern online.

Stencil and spray paint is the way forward I think! It'll be faster and more precise than doing it by hand. EBay is worth a look. I think you'll be better off with something that sticks to the wall than peeling it off, you'll want nice clear lines! It'll look fab when it's done though.

I'm so envious! I'm desperate to paint the house but we may/may not be moving in September so it seems a bit pointless.

IHateYourCarpet · 14/06/2018 20:19

I've decluttered the hamster I've been looking after and all of its belongings Grin he's gone home early!

Inspired by two I've bought some wall stickers to use as stencils Blush

Sparrowlegs248 · 14/06/2018 21:20

Wow you have all been busy! I am finding it hard to keep up.

I think it's a good indication that I can no longer easily find one thing to bin if I get to the end of the day and haven't done it. All the very obvious stuff is done so I need to start putting more thought in.

Yesterday I did a quick recce of the pantry and binned 5 out of date things (lentils.....etc) today I went to use a facial product and found it all dried up so that's binned too. Nothing too exciting but all in the right direction.

I've got a cleaner now for 2.5 hrs a week which means I use that time to tidy and sort, so will hopefully make more progress. She said today that the kids room is looking lovely!

NCPuffin · 14/06/2018 21:44

Also got rid of a pack of butter and a tub of margarine that were past their BB date. I had assumed DH was looking after the fridge Normally not too fussy, but I am now due to being pregnant.

Sparrowlegs248 · 14/06/2018 22:51

More pantry items binned and a magazine rack cleared out. Found Xmas cards from 2015 in there,!

cherrytrees123 · 14/06/2018 22:55

Well.. posted lots of stuff on eBay yesterday and then panicked today and started to think I should delete some of them and wait a bit...

TwoSweetenersImBitterEnough · 14/06/2018 23:22

Blitzed the downstairs, and now I'm going to have to clean the floor on my hands and knees with floor wipes because all my steam mop head covers are being washed Sad hope you lot are spending your night doing something a lot more exciting than me Grin

Betsy86 · 15/06/2018 06:19

Wow everyone has done so well the last couple of days!!! Pleased for you all and the room looks great to!

The wallpaper hmm yes it might get picked at, how about a navy wall and them some kind of 3d star art spray painted metallic and stuck up high or 3d letters of his name in metallic and greys to match the other walls?

I haven’t achieved as much the last few eves but did manage to stay awake abit later last night and sort through some bags and put some bits into correct places upstairs. Made a medium sized bag of rubbish and some recycling so il count that as my effort for the week so far. Will do some more in the doom cupboard hopefully tonight fun friday haha.
Have a good day everyone xx

Nofilter · 15/06/2018 10:35

So much progress everyone ;-)

2015 Xmas cards Notalota Grin

Today I’m condensing all my daily regime products into one 5 door chest and packing the rest of my dressing table...

Well that’s the plan!

IHateYourCarpet · 15/06/2018 11:03

Two - I've had another thought.

What about this technique? I'm not sure how good silver sharpies on navy are, but you can get the paint pens that may be better?

StealthNinjaMum · 15/06/2018 12:18

Keith I tried Flylady but I couldn't keep it up so it depressed me and I ended up doing less.

Carpet Yay! 100 items in one day is impressive. I think you win the thread!

Twosweeteners I bought pink butterfly stickers from ebay and Laura Ashley to make my daughters room more interesting but we've got cream walls everywhere.

I didn't do much in the end yesterday - just shredded a few bits.

Today I have gone to the dump with a gas bottle and the barbecue and a spare single bed have been taken away. I'm feeling a bit demotivated and tired but need to tackle some toys and books.

Everyone's doing so well...

I sold another item on eBay last week, and got the compensation through for the previous item I sold that MyHermes managed to mangle in transit. So, I am feeling positive about eBay again. Grin

I made some promise a few weeks ago about sorting out one item from my long-term eBay box to list each week. This hasn't happened, but it has just been decided that all of our games consoles and games can go, so that will release some space. It does mean that we have to test them and make sure all the cables are there. My goal is to list at leat half a dozen items this weekend.

I have still been adding some items to the charity box, and hope to drop that off next week.

KeithLeMonde · 15/06/2018 15:31

Well done everyone. I am not going to try to run before I can walk, but a top went into the charity bag this morning, and an old board game that was lying underneath a unit in our sitting room has gone into the recycling bin (missing pieces).

BrutusMcDogface · 15/06/2018 17:28

I have disposed of an old changing mat (my daughter is 4!! I will buy a new one for the baby I'm pregnant with Grin) and some coat hangers.

StealthNinjaMum · 15/06/2018 19:53

Toys and books advertised and a lady has already collected a couple. I am going to continue to bump my posts but if they haven't gone by Monday will put them in the car which already has 3 bags of charity shop stuff. I am terrible at leaving things around when they haven't sold and trying again. I need to forget the money (which I keep for dds) and just get them out of the house before the school holidays.
