Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge: Part 3: Are we nearly there yet?

StealthNinjaMum · 09/05/2018 08:45

For 2000 posts a group of messy mumsnetters have been chucking out, selling, recycling and cooking weird cakes.

Are we free of clutter yet? Sadly not.

Thankfully we're here to get support and be told off when we have a relapse and bring more clutter into the house, garages, sheds, gardens.

Newbies are welcome to join us, it's easy we literally just get rid of one thing a day and report back.

Just picked up 9 bits of rubbish from the kitchen side and binned them. That will be all for today as I’m getting into a bath and going to bed.

NCPuffin · 12/06/2018 22:04

Can I join please? Have been lurking on this thread for a while I've stayed up late reading about other people getting rid of stuff

We have lived in several countries over the years so had duplicates of several items. We have been decluttering enthusiastically on and off for about a year now. I take pictures of everything leaving the house, I'd estimate it's close to ten moving boxes now. I tidied up 2 squares in our Kallax the other day and promptly filled up another shopping bagBlush Have found enough spare sheets (despite going through the bedding about a year ago!) to make several fitted sheets and top sheets for the cot and cotbed for DC1 (due September).

My thing for today was several pairs of tights/ hold ups/ knee highs that I never wear. They went in the ragbag, to exchange for a discount voucher at H&M

The weekend didn't quite go to plan. Car battery died completely and spent too long in the pub....
Bought two new box files (one for me and one for house stuff) as they were broken so have got rid of some paperwork. Got a bag of shoes for recycling skip tomorrow. Trip to tip needed once car is sorted (hopefully by end of the week). Got DD's old bike to photograph and put on Gumtree. Got some Ikea storage things to get rid of-not sure whether to Freecycle them or see if we can get a few quid....

BuffysFavouriteStake · 13/06/2018 11:30

Stealth well it was a bit of a man clean tbh, he just doesn't see dirt or crumbs, or spillages, or !! But got all his tools and stuff out of the way, so I'm going in with the flash today Grin

NCPuffin I love reading these threads, it gives me inspiration to hear about everyone else's ups and downs, even if I should be using the time to declutter Sad

Nottalotta I saw your posts on the earlier thread, and wondered if you'd decluttered the OH. Well done you, and you'll have a lovely home to celebrate!

Nofilter · 13/06/2018 12:01

Really pleased with my progress yesterday. Not so much decluttering but working through list of really overdue tasks that were bothering me.

Two big emails of information sent to colleagues. Car cleaned by my own hands (a first) but did feel like I accomplished something. Threw a few bits away from our caravan.

Going to chuck out/organise the boot of car today as it’s going in next week for new tyres and is currently a messy tack room of sorts!

DD and My Mum on their way here we’ve decided to have an impromptu holiday away from said boxes and clutter! Need to nip to shops for something for tea maybe a picnic type BBQ meal but cooked in oven....

Brrrrr!!!

StealthNinjaMum · 13/06/2018 14:39

Not such a productive day today. I unexpectedly found myself having coffee with a friend and then wasted time shopping (but didn't empty my car of charity shop bags). I bought some secateurs even though I probably have some hiding under a pile of old leaves in the garden

I have done nothing else and I stupidly promised dds toad in the hole for dinner tonight so I'll be cooking rather than doing housework now.

Ugh, we found out today that our landlady will only give renew our lease with a 6 month contract. She knows I am expecting, and this would mean that there's a risk we might have to move in January/February next year, when DC will be 3-4 months old and I will be returning to work. So sod that, we've decided to move this summer instead, before DC arrives. Do I win for decluttering a 2-bed house?Grin I am so happy we started decluttering a while ago! Today I finally used up some body lotion I got in a secret Santa in 2016 and I've got permission to throw out a pair of speakers I borrowed from a friend 10+ years and five countries ago. Could be doing worse!

Gibble1 · 14/06/2018 00:11

Sorry to hear about the unexpected house move but at least you will have to literally look at everything!
Only got rid of a pair of socks today but it’s a start.
DD has finished school and has announced her plans to sort out the house while she’s off. That would be fab!
DH making murmurings about having found a load of insolvency documentation on his computer screen earlier. Am now worried- even more so as DD wants to go to medical school and DS wants to be a lawyer so we will have potentially 2 years paying for 1, 5 years paying for 2 and then 2 years paying for 1. It will absolutely cripple us until we’re in our 50s and then we will have to sort out DH and his lack of pension 😱

BrutusMcDogface · 14/06/2018 08:11

I've had a couple of days off Blush but have just caught up on the thread and will hopefully get on with a bit today (though have a busy day ahead so not sure exactly when!)

Moving house is a great opportunity to clear all the clutter and start afresh! Smile

KeithLeMonde · 14/06/2018 09:37

Hi everyone, can I join please? Been binge-reading threads about people with tidy houses and the answer always seems to be have less stuff. Could really do with some inspiration :)

sandgrown · 14/06/2018 09:44

Been off for a while but need to make an effort . Taking a bag of stuff to charity shop today .

NCPuffin · 14/06/2018 09:55

Can I do before and after pics of my classroom? I won't have it next year, so I need to muck out, big time!

IHateYourCarpet · 14/06/2018 10:29

Really fallen off the thread!

Can someone set me a challenge for today/tomorrow Grin ? I need a kick up the arse. And a good distraction, had some no great news about work and it's really stressing me out. I'm confident decluttering will save me!

SandAndSea · 14/06/2018 10:45

@IHateYourCarpet - How do you feel about filling a big sack with rubbish or charity stuff today?

SandAndSea · 14/06/2018 10:46

@IHateYourCarpet - Was that enough or do I need to up it? Grin

Gibble1 · 14/06/2018 10:58

Carpet: get rid of 53 items today and tomorrow!

DD is on a mission! All her school stuff went into the recycling yesterday when she got home and she has just appeared with 4 shoe boxes and 2 large bags of stuff. Sadly the bin men have already been so it’ll be sat outside for another 2/52.

IHateYourCarpet · 14/06/2018 11:05

I'm going to take on both of those challenges I think Grin a charity bag just magically appeared through the post box!

IHateYourCarpet · 14/06/2018 11:14

And at the risk of totally outing myself Grin THE SPARE ROOM IS CLEAR! AND DS IS ACTUALLY LIVING IN IT!

Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge: Part 3: Are we nearly there yet?
StealthNinjaMum · 14/06/2018 12:16

Welcome Keith. Do you have a plan or are you just being a bit chaotic (that tends to be my approach although every so often I get really serious and do a massive list).

NCPuffin yes to before and after pictures.

I love a challenge. Go for it carpet. I love the spare room by the way. It is empty!

Today on my to do list it is to do the Room of Doom. A few weeks ago you could see a large amount of carpet in there but I have been moving toys there and once more it's a mess. So I am going to put some things for sale on Facebook and maybe if they don't go in a week I'll give them to a charity shop.

OP posts:
IHateToCashew · 14/06/2018 12:25

Thank you Stealth! That's the aim until DS is old enough to actually want stuff in there. There's a few bits I still need to finish off in there, but on the whole it's nice and empty Grin if only I could persuade DH that every room should be like it!

Good luck with the room of doom! We'll be sure to send a search party if we don't hear from you by this evening.

The Facebook/gumtree sales have driven me mad now. So many people just not showing up to pick stuff up! I'm charity bagging everything not sold within the week too, or it'll still he here at Christmas!

So far I'm 19/53 - and that's just the bathroom Grin !

GreyCloudsToday · 14/06/2018 12:35

I've had a few days off too, but the mangy old mattress has been picked up today and the builders are sorting out next door's leak and our mouldy wall YAY!

Need to do some Freecycling and eBay listing today.

Carpet your DS' room looks lovely, well done!

Eek for the big move NCPuffin it's great you've got a declutter head start already.

SandAndSea · 14/06/2018 12:36

@IHateYourCarpet - Wow! Your son's room looks really lovely!! Very inspiring.

StealthNinjaMum · 14/06/2018 12:39

I'm still on mumsnet wasting time. Must do some work!

OP posts:
KeithLeMonde · 14/06/2018 13:28

Thank you Stealth. I think I need to do chaotic. I've tried Kondo-ing and I fail because I just can't devote huge chunks of time to decluttering. I like the idea of finding something to get rid of every day, so that this time next year there will be 365 fewer pieces of crap in my house :)

Today I am working from home so I've turned my head to look at our bookshelves and removed a small pile of books which I like the look of but realistically will never read.

I've given up on FB selling and the like - just about everything goes straight to charity shop or direct donation (food bank etc) now. I know that I am lucky not to be reliant on the money I would make from selling things on but it was so frustrating. I just want the stuff OUT and not hanging around waiting for people to buy or show interest.

IHateYourCarpet · 14/06/2018 13:31

DONE! Grin

Bag of books for charity are outside waiting to be collected tomorrow morning. Cleared two shelves!

14 bits of crap from DS's changing back, 19 from the bathroom, and 42 DVD's are packaged up and ready to be dropped at the post office to send to CEX.

So that's easily over 100 bits out today Smile

And thank you Sand and Grey. It's getting there, I've got a throw to collect and a few cushions to make, I need to sort out his wall hanging bits too - but it's a thousand times better than the room of doom it was. All that's left from in there are to big storage boxes or junk I'm sorting through.
