Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

Happy to join you on a Kondo thread, perhaps you can tell me what to do.

I didn't do much this weekend. We bought new school shoes and trainers for dds and put their ill fitting ones in the shoe recycling. It's good because normally the shoes would stay in the hellhole under the stairs forever.

I ordered new storage boxes from amazon on Friday and they came yesterday. I have to wait in for a delivery today so I am going to see if I can spend the rest of the day in the room of doom sorting out paperwork. These boxes will have suspension files. I have thrown away lots of papers but I am intending to keep some older stuff in the loft in these suspension files and recent stuff in the house.

PenelopeFlintstone · 29/01/2018 13:26

in the shoe recycling
What is this 'shoe recycling', please Ninja?

StealthNinjaMum · 29/01/2018 15:39

I'm not sure what happens to the shoes but we have little bins in our local shoe shop and also in supermarket car parks and council-owned car parks for shoe recycling.

In the end I only spent an hour doing paperwork but I think I'm getting to the end (as in I have about another 1 or 2 weeks and it'll be done - think I started the paperwork in about November!)

abitoflight · 29/01/2018 21:54

Still at it here!
Last week did some kitchen cupboards
DD did her tops and jumpers at weekend
Tonight I did my cosmetics and face creams etc - tons of half used, old or unused stuff and lipsticks I'm to old for/ dated (shimmering/pearlised)
So again boot has bags for charity, bags for rag and some stuff for sisters like unopened EA 8 hr cream
I'm not well versed with kondo at all but will give it a go

SandAndSea · 29/01/2018 21:55

Please count me in to any Kondo threads. I've done my clothes but am always interested in doing more.

I just convinced dp to throw out one of his jacket/cardi things which I've always hated.

I've also got a pair of M&S trousers I'm going to take back. They're faulty and I've been living with it but I've now decided to take them back. I know this sounds boring but I quite like how they stand out now in their 'faulty-ness'. I love signs of progress like that.

SandAndSea · 29/01/2018 23:31

Just having a wizz round before bed and have finally binned the big box a vacuum cleaner came in.

I've also moved a few things to sell into one place in the dining room.

It's just a bit of movement but it's in the right direction so all good!

StealthNinjaMum · 30/01/2018 09:01

Well done everyone. I did a bit more paperwork last night. While dds did homework I brought up some files from the room of doom and started sorting papers and shredding. I'm waiting for another delivery today so I'm intending to spend 6 hours on paperwork and other stuff in the room of doom (it has lots of half complete toys, furniture, wires/ leads, a present stash and dds school and artwork.)

I have also just ordered (after 10 years) our wedding photo album because I found the proofs last week!

SandAndSea · 30/01/2018 09:22

Haha! Well done, Ninja. That's great!

Meadwaymumof4 · 30/01/2018 10:02

Joining you all again. Now Christmas is over and the January sales I think I’m about back when I stated before I got rid of 600 things in two months!
My target is 150 things by the end of February.
I just need to get started!
I WILL be clutter free by the summer holidays!

StealthNinjaMum · 30/01/2018 13:02

I have spent three hours doing paperwork. Managed to fill two big sacks with paper and paper shreds. I have sorted out years of payslips, credit card and bank statements. The rest of the house is a dump again because I have done no other housework for about two weeks! It's amazing how quickly it happens.

I have just put a scarf in the charity shop file and some kitchen bits in my Facebook sales pile (which is huge as i haven't tried to sell anything for ages.)

Welcome back meadwaymum. That's a lovely aspiration, I'm hoping to be clutter free by the summer holidays too.

StealthNinjaMum · 30/01/2018 15:33

I'm an idiot! Shredded lots of bulky employment contracts and stuff but didn't quite get round to payslips.

Anyway went on to claim back PPI from a credit card I had in 1999 and it wanted to know whether my employer would've covered me if I was sick - I'm almost certain that they would have done but I shredded the terms and conditions this morning! Fortunately I still had my payslips and bank statements and I was able to give information on my salary, savings accounts and outgoings and why I would not have needed PPI.

So warning if any of you are thinking of claiming PPI don't shred everything you have!

Meadwaymumof4 · 30/01/2018 17:52

Oh no Ninja! Mine you I would never find my past contract in my hoard. My dh was burning some docs and found one that said he had six weeks holiday a year, he had forgotten so then claimed back lots of lost leave ( how did he forget that?)
That kind of thing reinforces why i need to hoard stuff....
I did ok today. Some paper bags gone, some old decorations, things packed up better. This might be slower this time round but I will get into the swing of it I’m sure.

Chunkymonkey123 · 31/01/2018 17:06

I was giving a bag of clothes I no longer fit in to 😳 to my sister and at the last second threw in a pair of black boots suede that are in perfect condition but I never wear as my feet get wet and I have similar leather ones. Held on to them for 5 years, so silly really.

My birthday was last week and I immediately started using/eating the nice stuff rather than putting it away for ‘best’. Progress I think!

Chunkymonkey123 · 31/01/2018 17:09

Don’t worry, I think you’ll get your PPI claim anyway Stealth, you would’ve been eligible for statutory sick pay and most companies are paying out without disputing the claim atm. Fingers crossed.

SandAndSea · 31/01/2018 17:37

I've done about 2 hours of paperwork today. I struggle to throw out old docs 'just in case' but have still generated a large pile to shred. My living room floor is now littered with lots of small, white circles.

StealthNinjaMum · 31/01/2018 18:08

Thanks chunkymonkey it's hard to prove you were misled when you don't remember and I wanted to put strong evidence why I wouldn't have knowingly wanted PPI. Today I found another savings account that showed I had a lot more savings than I thought so wouldn't need it. I basically applied for a credit card because I lived with my mum and was on no bills and wanted to have a good 'credit score' before I applied for a mortgage. I only paid PPI for a couple of months so I'm not sure they'll give me much money but now I'm doing this filing / decluttering I want closure on that file of papers and even a small amount would be a bonus.

Talking of closure I found account details for 3 accounts with £40, £5 and £5 and I closed them. I need to wait for the money as I last used them 20 years ago!

Anyway sounds like you're all doing really well. I shredded some ancient chequebooks. It took ages to pull them apart first but it's a tiny bit of space saved.

Happy birthday for last week chunky, glad you're enjoying your presents.

StealthNinjaMum · 01/02/2018 13:19

Have put some suitcases in the loft. We have 5 so I'm wondering whether to get rid of an old, scruffy one. I have thrown away a toy Henry hoover I stood on years ago that is too broken to go to a charity shop and put another toy in the charity shop pile.

More paperwork too but I'm near the end of that (only a few hours left). I have a massive list of admin associated with such paperwork that I'll work through over the next week year.

SandAndSea · 01/02/2018 13:35

Well done, Ninja! I'm still going. Have just put something on Freebay and shredded a load of papers.

StealthNinjaMum · 01/02/2018 14:23

Excellent work SandandSea. How are you doing with the papers? I still have a lot but for the first time the end is in sight.

SandAndSea · 01/02/2018 16:35

I've done another few hours (maybe 4?) of filing etc today - almost finished!! I think I've probably kept too much but never mind. At least it's organised. I've got more than a large box (crate) full of household files but it fits nicely in the cupboard now so that's OK. I'd like to bin more but I'm not sure what I might need. (Eg. When you take out insurance and they ask about past claims. I wouldn't remember if I hadn't kept the docs.)

I've still got more personal filing to do - birthday cards, photos etc. I know my photos are in a special kind of mess so I've been avoiding them.

I'm just having a little rest now before starting the next job.

Gibble1 · 01/02/2018 23:28

I forgot to add an out! I sold a little stereo which left on Sunday. Only a £5 but £5 more for DS’s Jamboree. That’s 5 miles closer!

StealthNinjaMum · 02/02/2018 10:16

I have possibly sold a toy on Facebook - waiting to arrange a time with the buyer. Not yet started on paperwork, I'm really not in the mood today but I have to do it. The paperwork has spread outside the room of doom into the hallway with little piles. Have a playdate later so I need to not leave piles of paper around.

misscheery · 02/02/2018 10:32

I recently decluttered and felt SO SO SO GOOD. I've split the decluttering process into categories

  • recycling- paper (old paperwork etc), boxes
-charity - clothes, decorations, shoes, curtains, small electronics -bin- all the stuff that couldn't be donated to charity -re-gift new stuff that hasn't been used and someone else might benefit from it
StealthNinjaMum · 03/02/2018 19:19

Did filing today. I also found a second scruffy suitcase (inside the first one I mentioned a couple of days ago). They belong to dh and he has agreed to let me get rid of them. I am going to put them on free cycle. Yay! They take up lots of space so I am glad they're going.

Gibble1 · 04/02/2018 19:57

I have cleared the hallway again today.
Someone has contacted me wanting to buy DD’s old dolls house (which is massive!) so I got DH to bring it down the hallway. I have also put lots of items in the car to take to recycling on Tuesday.
Have some other bits to put on faceache tonight and need to fine tune DS’s clothes outs so that rags are in a rag bag (I haven’t found anywhere to sell them but I know that charity shops can sell them) and all others are in a car boot bag ready for car bott sales.
