what's in your entrance hall?

is it tidy or a jumble of shoes and coats? if the former what's your trick? what furniture do you have? where do you keep your shoes? and kids' school bags? I'm on a mission to tidy our hall.

we did have a coatstand but it broke and fell on top of our nanny, clarting her quite badly on the head. She thought someone had followed her into the house and was attacking her . the coatstand is going in the bin. it looked shite anyway.

It's quite tidy atm apart from the folded up pram which shouldn't be there. If oyu ventured into our understairs cupboard though aka the cupboard of shit you'd understand why the hall is so tidy.

bozza · 22/03/2007 13:01

Well we have a coatstand. It is always needing clearing though but I do find it useful. The DC will stick their coats in the bit at the bottom that is for umberellas because they can't reach. Then their shoes sort of get pushed undermeath it. DH and I are quite good about keepign our shoes upstairs and the scruffy ones are in the utility. DS's book bag slips neatly between it and the wall. So all that works fairly well but there are generally other bits hanging around.

tokentotty · 22/03/2007 13:01

A fridge/freezer.... Came from old house when we moved and never made it any further

Hillary · 22/03/2007 13:01

A silver cross coach pram

JonesTheSteam · 22/03/2007 13:01

Entrance hall:-

Coat pegs for me and DH (waaaay too many coats hanging on there.

Coat pegs for DD and DS at sensible height so they can hang their own up.

A magnetic message board.

An old pine chest of drawers that has made its way in since we sorted the playroom out, and is now full of all the junk that should really find a proper home .

Shoes etc. live in children's wardrobes - get put there at the end of the day.

School bags live in the study/music room which was our garage before we had it converted.

So our hallway is tidy.

But you should see the study!!!!

ludaloo · 22/03/2007 13:04

Tis tidy at the mo!! (did it yesterday)
I have a bookcase, with a vase and twiggy things on it, and some big fat candles.

Thats it... oh and some pictures on the wall

crazylazydaisy · 22/03/2007 13:05

We have one medium and one large wicker box for all the shoes. The dcs still manage to put them on the floor though, but the boxes are brilliant to just fling them in - the shoes, not the kids- tempting tho........- and 5 coat hooks either side of the stairs. Our house has no storage, not even a loft so constantly trying to find places/storage that looks good!

brimfull · 22/03/2007 13:07

large basket of shoes
telephone on table with overdew library books on it.
coat hooks on wall

tis a mess at the moment

JanH · 22/03/2007 13:08

I am going to get

Leksvig hat/coat shelf thing and

Leksvig bench/shoe rack

(but have been going to for years and years - we won't need it soon, the kids and their shoes and coats will all have left home )

wurlywurlyCOVEREDinCHOCOLATE · 22/03/2007 13:09

2 bikes and a large book case.

JanH · 22/03/2007 13:10

(What we have now is a tiny supposedly-for-bathroom very shallow cupboard with 2 drawers which is great for miscellaneous crap and phone books) (phone is elsewhere though!)

TeeCee · 22/03/2007 13:11

I have a little wooden bureau thing my grandad made and I keep all our paperwork and 'stuff' in there. Next to that is a little wooden cupboard with the phone and ans phone on and inside I keep nappies and wipes so I don't always have to run upstairs for them. We chuck our keys etc on this too.

Coats that we are wore that day live over the end banister in hall, rest of coats are in wardrobes. Todays shoes live on bottom steps of stairs, rest in wardrobes upstairs.
School bags live either in kitchen on spare kitrchen chair wherer they get repacked etc or at weekends they live in cupboard under stairs.

hatwoman · 22/03/2007 13:11

we're ok for coats - just got a new cupboard under the stairs sorted, also ok for scarves and hats as we have a bench thing we throw them into, but shoes really piss me off. I like to have them by the door otherwise dds forget where they are/tramp dirt into the house but it never looks truly tidy.

happystory · 22/03/2007 13:12

Smallish side table, useful for letters, keys, stuff you don't want to forget. Has a small drawer, which we keep gloves etc in.Coats are in understairs cupboard. Usually a few sports bags lurking till someone (ME!) moves them. Shoes are by back door on an argos rack, not v attractive but damn useful

Rhubarb · 22/03/2007 13:12

Two coat hooks that are overflowing, two broken coat hooks, coats on floor, big box full of logs for the fire, shoes and boots and some shite painting from my talentless aunt.

bozza · 22/03/2007 14:55

At the other end of the hall we have a large bookcase with doors on the bottoms half in which lives cooking/garden books, photo albums, DS's radio controlled car, shoe polish stuff, table cloths/mats/food warmers, posh cutlery set, paper plates etc.

I would love an understair cupboard but ours is a toilet.

MorocconOil · 22/03/2007 15:01

An overflowing basket of shoes, boots etc, an overflowing coat rack, a cupboard we keep the computer on, me on mumsnet, a piano, 2 piano stools and a silvercross pram. It's probably the most used room in our house.

snig · 22/03/2007 15:05

hallway measures 2ft wide 8ft long and i have 2 pushchairs (only 1 child) a workmate, half a glass of orange juice (on floor) a clothes horse with clothes, a new yellow pages still in wrapper (on floor) a cuddly dragon and my ds duvet.

hippipotami · 23/03/2007 13:39

Snig - how can you possibly fit all that in??

We have a very narrow hall too (Victorian semi) so we have a wicker basket with shoes in (and loads more shoes beside it too), a peg rail with 9 pegs for coats/brollies/doglead etc, at least 2 items per peg and when you walk past some things fall off the pegs, and a high up shelf for keys, letters to be posted etc...

Tis a bit of a mess, really should have a better system...

southeastastra · 23/03/2007 13:39

a rabbit

WideWebWitch · 23/03/2007 13:41

Atm it's just a clothes rack with clothes drying on it. But that's because the cleaner's been today and has put all the shoes in the utility room next to the hall. I keep meaning to get either a blanket box type thing for shoes or an Ikea shoe rack thing although I suspect one of those'll make me look anal so prob not.

WideWebWitch · 23/03/2007 13:42

Shoes are annoying, when the cleaner hasn't just been and put them all away there are usually about 6 pairs living in the hall. Dh tripped over one this morning and was v bad tempered about it.

Tortington · 23/03/2007 13:43

i have skateboards, a projector, flipchart paper, a flip chart, 20 coats that cant be hung up becuase of builders going up the sairs, a lawnmower, a box with plates in, grass from lawnmower, mud, dog hair, and dust. oh and a radiator

yaddayah · 23/03/2007 13:44

Absolutley nothing.. Our hallway is long and thin with the stairs at the end, so dc's use is as a football or skittles area

All coats/shoes go in the utility room (which is stuffed to the gills !)
