Why isn't two washing machines a "thing" like two dishwashers is becoming?

Is it a thing? I don't even have one dishwasher.

Because it makes sense to keep dirty plates in one dishwasher while it fills up and keep cleaned plates in the other dishwasher until they're used.

But keeping dirty clothes in one washing machine and clean clothes in the other makes no sense - you need to get clean clothes out of the washing machine immediately, and dirty clothes kept in the washing machine are at risk of mildew. Also dishwashers normally wash everything together whilst washing machines normally have their loads sorted.

I've never heard of people having 2 dishwashers.

A couple of friends have 2 washing machines. Both tried to convince me to do the same but I wasn't convinced.

You can't store the wet clothes in the washing machine until you want to use them again. You have to dry them and iron them (or at least shake out the creases and hang them) first. The main point of the two dishwasher trend is that you can just use the clean plates straight from the dishwasher without bothering to put them away.

You don't wear the same set of clothing every 1-2 days like you do with dishes. You also don't tend to wash your entire wardrobe in one go.

You are always wearing or using some kind of textiles at all times, unlike crockery, which you use at set times and ignore the rest of the time.

Plates dry almost immediately during the dishwasher cycle whereas even a washing machine with a drier doesn't get clothes usably dry in a short amount of time.

Washing machines don't spread clothes out in nice attractive rows, you'd have to lean into a horrible rubbery damp steamy small space to select the clothing you wanted.

People who do it say you can just think of it as a cupboard that washes the dishes while they're in there. I'm hugely tempted but DH would say I was mad and I don't have a suitable space.

We have 2 dishwasher drawers- so essentially two different machines but they take up the space of one full size machine

But I can't really see the need for 2 washing machines. Why?

How big are people's kitchens that they could fit 2 dishwashers and 2 washing machines ffs?

It's an American thing I think because they have those massive beautiful kitchens

And I assume it's an "American who has their house photographed for aspirational websites" thing, not a normal American thing. For now anyway.

I suppose it would save cupboard space. What I think they must be about to release next if it hasn't already been done is a dishwasher which can tell by weight/sensors if it's being emptied or filled up and when it's full after being emptied, it automatically switches on, dispensing the correct amount of detergent from a big tank you fill less often, like the rinse aid and salt. And you could program in times when it's not allowed to switch on like if you're trying to avoid noise or more expensive electricity tariffs. They'd also specifically be sold in pairs so it could have a display on the front telling you which was dirty and which was clean.

They have different plates and cutlery for meat and ??dairy which are washed separately.

Have just got a 2nd washer dryer. Tis bliss. Two loads on at night, two dry loads in morning. I highly recommend it

Our dishwasher goes on a minimum of 3 times a day. 3 (or 4) loading, unloadings then putting away. I'd love to skip a step.

I have known Jewish families who keep kosher who have separate dishwashers for meat and milk crockery. But I didn't know it had become a thing in the secular world. I have never had one, but both my dds do. To me, filling and emptying one, let alone scraping the dishes clean of scraps, is far more faff than old-fashioned washing up at the sink.

My friend with 4 children has two washing machines and said it was life changing but I think for most people it's overkill. Just get one which takes bigger loads or does shorter cycles.

I think the point of the 2 washing machines is so that you can do 2 loads simultaneously so the laundry doesn't take as long to do.

Why would you have two dishwashers? Hasn't anyone heard of cupboards for storing plates and sinks for storing dirty dishes (whilst the dishwasher is running)?

And two washing machines aren't a thing because you'd get mould/mildew from the wet clothes.

I would love to have 2 washers and 2 tumblers. I have so much bloody washing. My machine seems to be on all the time. plus it would be amazing to have your "2nd" washer still functioning when the other suffers a breakdown! People just don't have space. I certainly don't unless they were both stacked double.

The only time I've seen two dishwashers is in a kosher household.

Though I can understand it if you have one if those useless slimline machines.

Family of 4 here. One dishwasher, run every evening. Wouldn't know what to do with a second one.
