Slugs in my kitchen at night!

Please help Confused

Last little while when I've came downstairs in the night to get a bottle for my daughter and there's been at least 2 or 3 slugs slithering about my floor. Leaving disgusting slime trails. Have disposed of them but no idea how to get rid of them? No idea how they are getting in either.

I live in a housing association house, not sure if they would be liable for getting rid of the little sh*ts or me?

Can anyone help?

Copper tape has worked brilliantly for me, and is much less cruel than salt.

imwithspud · 25/07/2016 20:41

We've had trouble with slugs too. In our old house it was awful, I'd come downstairs in the morning to find trails all over my baby (at the time) dd's playmat and any toys that hadn't been put away the night before. One night DP came downstairs to get a drink about half an hour after going upstairs and found about 7 or 8 of them in a clump in the living room. He salted the lot of them but the clean up in the morning was awful, so if you do salt them take them outside first! We never got rid of them completely and were glad when we moved!

We get them here too but it's not as bad, they usually turn up in the cupboard under the stairs so there must be a hole or something, we catch the odd one in the living room or kitchen and it gets disposed off.

It's relentless though isn't it? And they're so disgusting, I was very non plussed about them previously, but now I can't stand the buggers.

Slug soup made me heave a little.

ShelaghTurner · 25/07/2016 20:51

Copper tape made no difference here. Neither did slug pellets. The wee bastards are immune. Or coming in by parachute. I'm done with Mrs Nice Guy. If salt doesn't work I'm going to sit on the stairs with a shotgun Angry

mummytofourbabys · 25/07/2016 20:55

Messybun, Lot of people saying copper tape hasn't worked for them, so think that's a hit or a miss. I don't particularly want them crawling about my kitchen it's very unhygienic so if it takes salt to keep them away, then salt I'll use.

Good stuff waitrose..hopefully it lasts..

Salt is cruel, I admit it...

But when they are consistently crawling all over your dogs food and water and bed something had to give..

StorminaBcup · 25/07/2016 20:59

Cleaning the trails hasn't worked here either so I wondered if I was missing something. I put salt down all along the kitchen kickboards and edges too. One night I can down to make a feed and I saw one balancing along the top of a skirting board to dodge it. Sneaky bugger Angry

I'll give the copper tape a go. I wonder if vandal tape would work (the stuff with spikes on it)?

StorminaBcup · 25/07/2016 21:00

*came

ineedamoreadultieradult · 25/07/2016 21:20

If you have put salt behind the kick boards you are going to have to take the kick boards off again and remove the gooey remnants of slugs otherwise your kitchen is going to stink with fermenting slugs!

mummytofourbabys · 25/07/2016 21:21

Ah really? Didn't even think of that. Oh yuck EnvyEnvy

Hate slugs. I just pick them up in tissue paper and flush em down the loo.

ShelaghTurner · 25/07/2016 21:27

Oh really? I was hoping to pour salt down the hole and forget about them forever.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 25/07/2016 21:29

Best to try kill them as they are on the way in or out of your house rather than in your house in my experience. Our slug pelletbbarrier around the outside wall of our house has donever the trick for us.

mummytofourbabys · 25/07/2016 21:29

Haha shelagh me too!
Never even bought about the slimey little creatures decomposing haha..

Having to clean up melted slugs sounds gross lol I've never actually poured salt on a slug before. What happens to them?

mummytofourbabys · 25/07/2016 21:35

Oh yuck they turn into a big pool of bubbling melting slime Envy

Oh god no, just re-read my post and I worded it badly Blush I meant they were on my DD's playmat (who was a baby at the time, she's nearly 3 now). The playmat spent a lot of time in the washing machine.

imwithspud · 25/07/2016 21:36
  • nearly 4 not nearly 3. Ffs.
celeste83 · 25/07/2016 21:39

I'm not sure i would even feel guilty for inflicting that on them i hate them that much!! I'll stick to flushing them down the loo i think though. I quite like hearing them plop Grin

datingbarb · 25/07/2016 21:58

I get them to in my kitchen every now and again, I have come down at night in the dark an trod on them bare foot Shock I guess they come in behind the washing machine/sink or something but not sure how I can put anything down as outside my house alone the front is a big built in raised flower bed that comes up to the bottom of the kitchen window so they must be behind the brick work!

They are horrible fuckers, can't stand them Angry

Teddy1970 · 25/07/2016 23:51

We tried flushing them down the loo before we discovered salt, I remember one time I thought I'd flushed it away, but somehow it got stuck to the side of the pan on the inside of the loo..I nearly had a fit when I went to use it later! I don't feel guilty about using salt, slugs are pointless, horrible creatures.

mummytofourbabys · 26/07/2016 08:51

Ah spud thank goodness for that.
Shame poor baby. They really are awful little things!

Well guys..

Slug update for today is,
2 nights now without any sightings Grin so hope they have slithered off elsewhere for fear of being melted with salt. Haha.

mrsmortis · 26/07/2016 10:04

We had them getting through an air brick into the living room. We took to covering the carpet with salt every night before going to bed, and vacuuming it up again first thing in the morning... After a week or so they stopped trying..

Slugtired · 04/08/2017 02:50

Originally I did not realise I had a problem I honestly thought I had dropped a gherkin on my floor without realising , got back tonight six of them, gherkins my foot . Found two entry pointsand they have been salted , and would youbelieve also my washing machine. What a mad world slugs managing to get in through the drainage system night
