Welcome all - and thanks to SpareCrust for leading us through April.

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

Link to the Flylady website

Don't let the somewhat sickly and barftastic language of the site put you off: the underlying system is sound!

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework; which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with masses of bumph. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

** And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight - it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t! . Some of us have been on here for years and some of us natter rather a lot – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers are very, very welcome!

We are in Zone 5 this week: the living room or family room

Spend 15 mins decluttering in Zone 5.

When you have finished decluttering, the detailed cleaning list (if you are at that stage) for Zone 5 is here

Went to lovely meeting last night with some other mothers whose children have ASD, just four of us.

Now everyone's house was immaculate but they still had problems! It seems that a tidy house is not the answer to all life's ishoos..I'm afraid to say, having had this spiritual insight, I then returned to my house and it looked very small shabby and the cause of ALL my problems Blush and this morning I am struggling to get out of that mindset

which is to blame everything on mess!

Had my haircut this morning and coloured, a rather orangey tint if I may complain about being adventurous. But it looks alright with the lights down low.. Fish in breadcumbs (ready meal) for lunch. Dd seems to have found someone to visit and bake with. An hour away Sad Why has she ditched her local friends grrrr?

Ds1 is at revision session and due home shortly. Dh has gone out for business lunch. And ds2 is being v demand avoidant; I would have taken him swimming with home ed group but there was a clash with hairdresser and pouring rain and having to let eldest in, v annoying.

And on that note I had better go downstairs and tidy.

SC I;m sure I still haven't recovered from a caesarian I had 15 years ago, and it is has definitely affected my lower back. The muscles have been affected in some dismal way. Although [brightens up] I'm sure the hard labour of child rearing has given me other muscles.

Hello fledglings. Just wanted to drop in and say hi as I have completely failed to keep up with the thread this month. I have managed to keep the house relatively clean and tidy but had underestimated how little time I would have during the day with baby ds to look after. He is doing well and will be three months old this week - where does the time go? I have ds and dd at home as well this week as it is half term (and looking typically wet). I have just seen you are suffering sc sending youCakeBrew I hope you are taking it easy. I am hoping to post more regularly in June Hmm

Lovely to see you Mercury! Thanks for the lovely brew and cake! Sending Flowers in return, with a bit of Cake on the side!

Crikey though, can't believe your ds is 3 months already!! You are doing extremely well indeed if your house is "relatively clean and tidy" when you are looking after a baby and two others! Hats off to you! Star

Interesting Knitting to keep in mind about a tidy house not being the solution to all of life's woes. I do think it takes away a certain level of unnecessary stress though (or rather, I imagine it would if this place were ever orderly!!).

Had to cackle a bit at orangey hair story [sorry]. I use a pkt and I experimented with various shades until I found one I liked. (Currently have inches of grey at roots because I can't bend to do it!!) Anyway, after the first experiment dd said that I looked like "Cocoa the Clown" Grin And eight weeks or so later when I repeated the process with a different shade and I asked her again (hoping for an improved verdict) she said I looked like "An Old Cocoa the Clown" Confused

And yy to back > caesarean issues. I am sure my innards weren't replaced in the right sequence after mine! Have never been the same since! Grin

Very difficult to get anything at all here. Have decluttered stacks of magazines but I can't lift the bag I've decluttered them in to. Better than nowt though.

About to try and bend and put some more washing in but weather very unpredictable for drying.

Aside from Flying difficulties, no couriers are arriving at office or being sent out because there are ongoing strikes by transport and state workers. Entire train/tram/metro/bus system has shut down again.

Just noticed that whoknows is fine to do June, so I'll let you start the thread - thanks!

I can never get the live link to Flylady Q&A on FB working (have only tried once tbh) keep meaning to listen to it another time and see what it's like.

See you on the June thread!

I keep Flylady well away from my FB page, I'd be embarrassed if my friends found out I was following such tweeness.

June thread coming right up......

Flylady (and indeed MN in general) is a private thing for me.

Had my leaving party which was really nice. I did get really sad just at the end as I handed back my security pass! It felt so final. BUT I have closure now, and that is good :)

Then went to friend's house to give her DS a piano lesson, we were jamming together as well, it was awesome :)

Will sign on to new thread (thanks Who Star) to mark place as we leave for our little trip up north tomorrow evening - sooo excited! :o
