Just noticed the old thread was full, so hope no one minds me starting the new one

Two big bags of clothes lighter, hopefully off to spark joy in people who need them. Admittedly I anxiously dithered over one teeny babygro in particular, but it's gone. Feeling good, I thinkConfused

Babieseverywhere · 18/04/2016 21:49

I have two massive bags of bedding to take to charity and that is a big weight off my mind.

I have started organising and folding the children's clothes, I have already thrown what was scruffy or outgrown. Then I will get my big boy pants on and do my clothes.

I am slowly improving my house :) Wonder how long it will take to finish everything ?

AlisonWunderland · 18/04/2016 22:26

I was very sceptical about the claim "never clean your house again" if you embrace Kondo.
And yes, it's still bollocks, because tidying and decluttering is not the same as cleaning.
However my house is definitely looking better AND cleaner without me really feeling that I'm a slave with a duster.
I guess it's because Before, cleaning was a pain because I had to tidy first, and clear surfaces of random crap before I could wipe them.

Now empty surfaces get wiped down during the minute it takes the kettle to boil, or eyeliner to dry, so doesn't even register as cleaning.

stiffstink · 20/04/2016 06:14

DS has had his birthday. House full of toys. Cardboard everywhere. Washing everywhere.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 20/04/2016 09:53

Poor you stiffstink
I'd like to see Marie Kondo bring out a guide to Konmarie when you have children under 10 years old!

mugginsalert · 21/04/2016 14:00

hello everyone, sure this has been asked and answered before, but...
I'm contemplating the pile of plastic kids toys that are everywhere in my house. Where did you do toys in the order of tidying? are they komono, or do they come before/after that?

I've only done clothes and was hoping to do books this weekend, but I can't get to my bookshelves past the toys and the diy stuff...

Sonnet · 21/04/2016 15:26

juist signing in to cheer you all on.

(I had had a ruthless throwing out session a few months ago so Kondo'ed my house over 5 intense days)

2 weeks later I am still loving it - it is so tidy and organised.

I have just read "30 days to a Clean and Organised House" and whilst I don't have to do the organising part I am beginning to use the daily routines.

The only area of my house I ignored were my 2 teenagers bedrooms on the top floor. Now, they have had a huge declutter last Autumn and to be honest are not that bad. BUT we have just decided to do some long overdue decorating for them and Kondo-ing their belongings will be part of that - I can't wait to start! Grin

NotCitrus · 21/04/2016 17:26

Hello again!
I have been poorly and processing an extra flat-load of possessions. Loads of duvets, pillows, towels and bedding got donated to a local vet, as the homeless hostel and local charity shops didn't want them. I now have sufficient cleaning products and dishwasher tablets for a year but otherwise just have one fridge to get rid of. And am selling the playpen.

I have shredded a bit more but I swear paperwork comes in faster than I can process it! I ought to open a better savings account but I know they will send me paper...

muggins Do toys now - try filling a carrier bag of the really annoying crap ones and then if no outcry in a couple weeks, get rid. And any that your kids agree to get rid of. Repeat regularly. I sort of got on top of toys but now dd wants all her cuddly toys to have their own 'beds' aka storage boxes all her toys should be in! So have acquired loads of colourful cardboard boxes from the supermarket - which are all wine boxes, so her room looks like I'm a total lush!

Babieseverywhere · 22/04/2016 03:02

I keep skipping categories. I am avoiding my clothes as it is making me anxious. But I have nearly finished bedding and curtains. (Just need to strip beds and wash/sort bedding currently ON the 5 beds)

Yesterday was loading dishwasher, couldn't bear the kitchen and spent 3 hours cleaning kitchen. Half the cupboards are sorted and sparkle. My dining table is full of gadgets we don't use....goodbye bread maker, rice cooker, George Foreman grill.
Aiming to strip beds, finish sorting remaining kitchen cupboards today. Wish I had took before pictures but it was so unexpected, so I didn't.

Also need to tackle downstairs shelves, as they need tidying.

Then next week, I need to do my clothes.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 22/04/2016 08:54

Clothes category is very satisfying once you get into it babies
It also has the big advantage of either freeing up space in wardrobe / drawers , or actually being to to fit clothes into them rather than stuffing them and leaning against the door.
I freed up a couple of shelves in a wardrobe which then gave me space to put my handbags once they had been culled.
Previous handbag space is now available for something else.

mugginsalert · 22/04/2016 09:29

Thanks notcitrus , I'm going to wait until kids asleep tonight and then I'm going to stealth remove some toys - I've got my eye on some of the worst offenders and am looking forward to seeing the patch of carpet under them!

Babies I've only done clothes and it's made such a difference, everything including shoes and bags lives in one wardrobe per person, and mornings are so much easier because we can lay our hands on things straight away. I'm looking forward to doing my kitchen too though!

Babieseverywhere · 22/04/2016 11:49

I have sorted and folded DD1 and DS clothes...their drawers are so joyful :)

I have sorted out DD2 and DD3'S clothes out. Just need to fold theirs. Got more shoe boxes today, so I can finish theirs.

Just have a big mental block about my clothes. I hate clothes and am fat (though losing 2 lbs a week atm) so it is more a case of keeping stuff which is practical and fits me !

storybrooke · 22/04/2016 13:28

Hi again! So yesterday was meant to be the day I blast through the house km'ing everything... Erm, didn't quite get there!

Sold the kids swing set (and went to Costco and bought a huge kids dinosaur activity pool Hmm) and cleared the garden of everything bar two planters and the sand pit.

km'd and deep cleaned two bathrooms (they click!), did make up and threw away 8 bottles of half used perfume and the rest is all stored nicely, separate to my daily make up. Also did tools and everything stored away together now from various parts of the house. Then after dump and Costco decided to revisit the pantry and get rid of the pizza and doughnut makers we've had for two years and never used, should have done them the first time round really. Today we started the kids craft stuff and managed to finish playdoh and accessories/sets.

I'm not quite doing the categories in order anymore but it seems to be working picking a subcategory on the master list I'm working from and going for it. We're off to the park this afternoon to wear out the kids so I can do their drawing/painting supplies later tonight! Grin

How far are you guys from finishing? I'd guess I'm about half way through, set a deadline for June when my dm is over from abroad. Hopefully doable!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 22/04/2016 16:58

I think Komono is such a big category that it's up to you to choose the order, be it a small category that will be easy, or a big category that might be harder but could make a bigger difference.

Three weeks in, my clothes are still as Kondoed as ever . So neat!
The wardrobe doesn't look at good as it could, mainly because of the random assortment of hangers. So I've splashed out on a load of matching hangers so that at least everything looks even.
This evening's job is to transfer everything on to new hangers and most probably a few extra items might get the boot during the process!

stiffstink · 23/04/2016 06:00

I've done paperwork! There's a box of DH's old school reports to go through but that's next to his side of the bed (to annoy him).

I'm still doing DS's clothes, its just shocking! I've kept way too much neutral stuff for DD so I want to revisit it once I've made some room in the nursery to Kondo.

Trickymoments · 23/04/2016 08:50

storybrooke how do you store kids arts & crafts & drawing etc stuff? Ours is not used all that often but I'm finding it hard to decide what to chuck & keep and how/where to store it.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 23/04/2016 11:54

How awful.
Despite a severe cull on wardrobe, my 50 new hangers are not nearly enough!
Off to order another 50. Maybe 100...

storybrooke · 23/04/2016 12:30

tricky we had tonnes all stuffed on a big shelf in the diner and overspill stuffed in a cupboard. Blush

I'll take some pictures tonight but the drawing and stickers are in a drawer with crayons in the sideboard, some chalk and pens on a shelf, which will need rehoming at some point, and playdoh stored in the sideboard. The main craft stuff (bits, glue, bubbles etc) is in a box in a cupboard with paints. Amazing how much there still is actually but the kids do playdoh and drawing most days, the chalks are handy for throwing them outside to play and the paints are out of the way for rainy days. Consoled myself with the fact it's at least culled and in semi categories!

When discarding I threw away anything tatty, not noticed, broken crayons and things I didn't think we'd end up using and in the end anything to big to fit where I wanted it. It wasn't the easiest category!

Today managed to sort medicine, spices and batteries. Not much but off to an event at the beach today so spent the morning getting kids dressed, redressed after lunch and generally feeling anxious. Fun times!

AlisonWunderland · 23/04/2016 20:13

My cleaning products stash is out of control!
And there's no washing up liquid!

StrangeOddment · 24/04/2016 10:33

Fifth bag of textiles to chuck...plus a small box of outgrown baby clothes.

Also, the baby has more soft bunnies than I have seen together in my life. Seriously, there is a proper theme going on.

BUNNIES EVERYWHERE.

Good luck with the cleaning stash Alison!

I once cleared my MIL's spice cupboard, storybrooke. How many duplicates did you find? I think my record was 4.

storybrooke · 24/04/2016 12:57

Alison is it wrong that I totally zoomed in your picture and added to my next shopping list? Blush

Strange I had three paprika. I barely use paprika so if you'd have asked me before I'd have said I didn't have any and probably bought another!

I've lived here 4 years and just found out I can adjust the shelves height so spent the morning cleaning and rearranging cupboards, ticked off plates, mugs, glasses and kids stuff. Oh and crockery, tea towels and tableware, pots, pans and utensils. Dh back with the kids so back into slave mum mode for the rest of the day. Will delve under the sink this evening. I know for a fact I've got half a cupboard of 8 year old unused dyson cleaning products I bought with my first dyson, would they have expired? I may try a little on the calpol stain under ds' bed. then we can move his strategically placed bed back to where it was.

I love bunnies, my dd isn't hugely into soft teddies but they bring me joy so she's kept three Grin

Sorry I can't add a picture of the kids stuff as my stupid iPhone has decided I don't have any storage left, iCloud isn't letting me see anything from the pc to transfer the pictures, iTunes doesn't recognise the phone so I've opted for Dropbox to transfer my 2.5k pictures over. Needless to say my phone will be kondo'd next!!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 24/04/2016 13:45

I have cut cleaning stash slightly by doing some cleaning, based on what bottle has a tiny bit left in it rather than what needs to be cleaned the most!
3 bottles of toilet cleaner is acceptable as we have 3 loos, and we have a bottle next to each.
3 bottles of dishwasher rinse aid...Nope. We only have one dishwasher.

I hate cleaning and have this delusion that buying the next big thing in cleaning product will magcially clean my house.
Not if said cleaning product lives in the cupboard with all its brother and sister cleaning products

storybrooke · 24/04/2016 19:38

Ok kids are asleep I'm going under the sink Shock

AlisonWunderland · 24/04/2016 20:28

storybrooke If you're not out in 2 hours, we'll send a search party in after you!

storybrooke · 24/04/2016 21:46

Haha! I'm done! Filled a black bag with various half used crap and 6 febreeze air fresheners I can't even remember a time I used the stuff and had enough space for the gardening box so cleared the last cupboard in the kitchen! Yay! All clean and in order. Ok, well the surfaces have things to take to charity tomorrow but it'll soon look better I think.

Just checked eBay and I have clothes selling tomorrow and Wednesday so that's more gone. Gah, it's such a huge battle, anyone else feeling it's slow going?

Tomorrow will be a busy one with dd starting preschool and nursery for ds when she's done and then need to meal plan and do the food shop when they're in bed so glad this weekend was more productive than I envisage the week to be!
