January Fledglings - Resolve to Fly!

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 31/12/2015 18:22

So, here we are at the start of 2016, poised with our control journals and ready to Fly for another year. New and old, all are welcome here, we loosely follow the principles of Flylady to manage our homes and lives, we also chat and lend an ear to whatever life throws at us.

We post links to the Flylady site each day throughout the month, with daily babysteps and missions inside that weeks zone. We also declutter. No links in this post, I'm on my phone and will do some separately, but it's time to get ready for 2016. A big thank you to everyone who has run the thread in 2015 and everyone who has contributed Wine.

Afternoon all! [strong coffee] to those of you who were up with the sparrows.

Beautifully sunny and mild weather here still!

Big waves and thanks for links to Whoknows - like the sound of your bracing walk!

Hello to Stinch TheExMotherinLaw Allgunsblazing and any newcomers I have missed (and apologies if you are name changers and I haven't recognised you, or you are perhaps joining from another Fly thread? A warm welcome anyway!)

Glad you have had a much-needed rest Toffee. Quite a few near-teenage strops brewing in this household too atm if it's any consolation!

Arf at the pigeon sticking tools lying idle PA Grin and great that your dh is back from his travels. Ooh are you studying *? And I'm about to get some old-gimmer glasses so you have my sympathies on that front. Not only can I not see well enough to drive any more I can't see to do very close up sewing either! Such a bugger!

Happy shopping Mercury take it steady!

Happy Flying Grey

Blue yes I don't normally find HW funny as a rule either tbh!

My decorations are staying up until twelfth night but Monday morning (and attendant 6am start) is approaching fast (dreading start of term tbh although trying not to show it) and need a list to get me motivated today:

To do:
e-mail vet
tidy kitchen, clean surfaces, sort dw
dog-walk no. 2
tidy up fridge, wipe around, chuck out anything extraneous still lurking from Christmas
do more thorough s&s than normal
carry laundry down from 2nd and 1st floors and sort
start washing (have at least 4 loads to do)
do some baking
try and remain patient and non-shouty with dd and make her last holiday weekend as pleasant as possible (this last one is a bit of a challenge atm)

Happy Flying everyone!

Slimmingcrackers · 02/01/2016 12:54

Oh and really should add some boudoir tidying to that list - it's in a horrible state again!

NickNacks · 02/01/2016 13:11

My bedroom is also my priority today. It very rarely gets a tidy and is so far down the list of things to do that it never gets reached. Poor thing.

Slimmingcrackers · 02/01/2016 13:15

Good luck with your boudoir too Nicknacks!

Big waves to everyone I've missed!

NickNacks · 02/01/2016 15:04

Bedroom is done, I dragged dh up there to help and it was done pretty quickly. It's not decluttered so it's not a 'done' room.

NickNacks · 02/01/2016 15:04

Oh and good luck with yours too sc Smile

fuzzpig · 02/01/2016 16:08

Well my laundry plans are on hold since DH seems to have used up both the stain remover AND laundry conditioner while we were at mum's Confused he's buying both on the way home at Wilkos (he needs to get a new heater anyway - currently have no heating on ground floor!).

DCs having a nice day playing with a friend. Leftover pizza for dinner so nice and easy afternoon I reckon.

Honu · 02/01/2016 19:30

Happy New Year fledglings! and many thanks to all of you who led the threads last year.

This year, however, needs to improve! On NY day, woken at 2.15am by DH; after sorting him out I couldn't get back to sleep. District nurse in the morning, 50 mile round trip to hospital with equipment that needed mending in the afternoon.

I signed up to the January cure and the first thing is to clean all your floors thoroughly. So I thought I'd start today. Looking at mine I realise that for far too long I have been taking flylady's mantra of 'just vacuum the middles' rather too readily. I had already decided to do just the floors in the current zone and do it week by week, but then I started in the study (part of zone 1) where there is a large pile of stuff to be sorted and rather too much furniture in the room. After picking up all the crap round the edges (it was sordid Blush) the handheld Dyson and I are both recuperating now, me with MN, him with his little green charging light. And still more rooms to do!

While getting ready to go to a Christmas do my knicker drawer jammed shut. Not because I had stuffed it too full (it is that rare thing in this house, a beautifully kondoed space) but just because it felt like it. After 10 minutes of fury I got it out, it refused to go back into the chest, and the drawer has been sitting on my bedroom floor all over Christmas. Today I attacked it with wax. It is so lovely now - so now I have to attack all the other drawers which are absolutely rubbish compared with my beautifully sliding knicker drawer. So the Honu Household Tip is to wax the runners of your drawers so you will not be standing wearing only a bath towel with the prospect of having to wear your dirty knickers or go commando.

I may have gone over my 15 mins of MN time. Luffs you all. H.

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 02/01/2016 22:03

Evening all,

Honu, you have made me laugh with your knicker drawer antics! And yes to the neglected edges of floors, I've really slipped on missions/detailed cleaning the last few months and it shows. I did a proper deep clean of the bathroom a couple of weeks ago and was a bit Blush at how much difference it made.

Tomorrow is Sunday, so no missions.

Thanks for the welcome. Today was laundry and a lot of rest, as I've been overdoing things lately. I've also been trying to do some online shopping. Tomorrow the ceiling decorations must come down, as dh is shredding them with his birthday present of a quadcopter.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 03/01/2016 02:07

I have only just got in and have to go do physio so it is going to be another late night. But actually feeling tired around 2am is progress from the last two weeks and going out was very good for the soul so I am going to claim the saturday family fun and the sunday renew your spirit in that one action.

2 loads washing done although 1 was a rewash
folding done
ironing done
financial paperwork done.

Also been working on a wip which would be nice if I can get done tomo but I need to find the sewing machine and clear some of my mending pile as there seems to be rather a lot of school uniform in there atm and school is back monday morning. Is it just me or does the quality of school uniform and clothes in general seem to have gone down in the last few years?

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 03/01/2016 08:08

Sleep fail here, was wide awake till gone 3.30 and got to get up, pack and go home now Sad.

OP posts:
NickNacks · 03/01/2016 08:50

Good morning whoknows sorry you haven't slept very well. I suffer with insomnia but these two weeks I've had off work have been amazing, sleeping until 7.30am at least each morning which is unheard of for me. I can go to sleep find but usually wake between 4am-6am. Back to work tomorrow and I fear it will get bad again. I hope you get a chance to rest today whoknows even if you don't get to snooze 😴

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 03/01/2016 09:12

Biggest problem this holiday has been DH snoring, he's had a stinking cold since Christmas Day which has resulted in terrible snoring and bad sleep for me. Hopefully he will be better soon.

OP posts:
PositiveAttitude · 03/01/2016 09:22

Good morning.

WhoKnows I hope the journey home goes well and not too much of this -> Envy (sick)

DH has organised a meeting at our house tonight. I am more than slightly annoyed bloody furious as it is my last evening of rest and relaxation and its the darts final!! How quickly can I kick everyone out of the house so that I can watch it?

SC I am studying accountancy. Its hard work fitting it around my 2 jobs (plus other little "on the side" jobs), grandson spoiling duties, sorting the house, being mum to 5 DC, although only 2 now living at home its the 3 that live away that increase my stress levels the most, visiting mum in a nursing home and sorting my dad out - which causes masses amount of stress!!!! I am just waiting for results from my last exam. Should know in a couple of weeks whether I did ok or not.

Today's plan is to do as little as possible for one last day. I do need to go shopping and I now need to clear the back room out good enough for this darn meeting. Hmm
I suppose I will need to get some washing and ironing done so that we all have clothes ready for work tomorrow.

Have a good day everyone.

Lisawantsacat · 03/01/2016 09:58

Morning everyone, having joined up with the best of intentions on NYE, I welcomed 2016 far too hungover to contemplate any FLYing. Then spent family day out yesterday (thoroughly recommend Disney's Good Dinosaur, but take tissues!).
But here we are, a teensy bit late, and I'll try this again.

So on the To Do list for today...
Put away the dry laundry
Hang out the wet laundry
Put away the majority of the Xmas decs
Do a school uniform audit, check what needs buying tomorrow
Make some selections on Simply Cook, so I stop receiving recipes we really don't like
Do some Beaver admin (need to transfer my biggies to Cubs and send welcome info to new littleys)

AllGuns what mindfulness course are you doing? I tried Mindful in May but didn't stick with it. Always keen to find one which might work with the DDs to help concentration at school.

Allgunsblazing · 03/01/2016 10:21

lisa, I bought this book and I can thoroughly recommend it. I am on week 4, about to start week 5. I am not at al woo and I'm the most practical and down to earth person ever, but these exercises are amazing. You know that feeling when you are on holiday and you're just relaxed and not rushed, whatever, it's a holiday..? That's what these exercises make me feel :)

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 03/01/2016 10:31

Insomnia is not fun. Nope not fun at all. can you tell mine has had me up all night?

Sorry you had such a bad night whoknows Good luck with the packing up and safe journey home.

PA sometimes i do wonder if you are in fact wonderwoman.

Glad you have managed to get some sleep this holidays nicknacks

I have to drive later so I am going to see if i can convince my body to sleep a hour or two so I have a chance of being safe. night night

Also were we being good cos I vote for either a chalet and massive amounts of snow or a tropical beach in the naughty corner. Wink

MercuryRising · 03/01/2016 10:51

Ugh another one with lots of sympathy for the insomniac fledglings after hardly sleeping at all last night.

Ta da

On a positive note tomorrow is an Inset day and I have just 6 weeks left to work (not that I am counting!)

Slimmingcrackers · 03/01/2016 11:56

Afternoon!

Sorry to hear so many of you are suffering from lack of sleep! Good to hear that you have had a well deserved reprieve from insomnia though Nicknacks. Fab work on the boudoir btw (mine not looking that much improved tbh).

Safe travelling Whoknows! Dh still has flu atm and I have moved in to the boudoir temporarily; his snoring is bad at the best of times but its indescribably loud atm (even the dog is covering his ears) so you have my sincere sympathies!

Safe travels to you too YesEinstein and glad you had a good night out ... mmm... difficult one... still trying to deny impending reality of school/work /chores etc here so vote for the snow chalet! Plus I sincerely hope there will be gluhwein and apple streudel ...

Mercury you sound v organised and ditto about enjoying a last bit of quality dd time this afternoon. (We are finally making ruddy gingerbread house!!!) Despite dh's flu and various family and travelling stresses, it's been so nice spending time together and although I shall be mightily relieved to get my kitchen back, I shall miss everyone tomorrow! Good luck with your remaining 6 wks at school and take it steady.

Might invest in a copy of that bk Allguns! I think I have a weak mind [geddit? Grin ]. Seriously, can never focus on one thing at once!

Hello to Lisa and good luck with your list!

Crikey PA see you are taking it as easy as ever Grin Grin

Hope you manage to recuperate a bit today Exmotherinlaw

Great to "see" you Honu Smile Smile You have inspired me to tackle my own particular knicker drawer crisis and will be sure to wax 'me runners!! Grin ow at your floor cleaning exertions! Really impressive!! (Especially on so little sleep.) I took one look at "The Cure" after reading your post and turned the screen off! Cleaning the floors in this house would literally take months. Particularly as most of our storage consists of cardboard boxes resting on said floors!

Waves to Fuzzpig Greymalkin Dogsbum Shannara Ellie Feetheart Toffee Scatty and Swan (if you are about?) and big waves to anyone I have inevitably missed!

Yesterday's list:
e-mail vet done
tidy kitchen, clean surfaces, sort dw done [twice]
dog-walk no. 2 (and 3) done
tidy up fridge, wipe around, chuck out anything extraneous still lurking from Christmas done
do more thorough s&s than normal NOPE
carry laundry down from 2nd and 1st floors and sort done
start washing (have at least 4 loads to do) done
do some baking done
try and remain patient and non-shouty with dd and make her last holiday weekend as pleasant as possible (this last one is a bit of a challenge atm) managed it !! Had quite a good evening in fact!!

To do:
more laundry including ballet kit and track suits etc
iron school uniform
polish shoes
gingerbread house
quick food shop
dog walking

Enjoy your Sunday everyone!

Slimmingcrackers · 03/01/2016 12:01

Honu that should have read "Wow" not *ow" but perhaps the latter appropriate in circs Grin

Forgot to wave to Blue (and many others I'm sure)

Oh yes, need to make soup today too to use up all the root veg in fridge

fuzzpig · 03/01/2016 12:24

'Morning' Fledglings! (I had a lovely lie in this morning Blush)

DH has taken the DCs to Tescos for a top-up shop. I actually have a decent amount of enthusiasm today, so going to try and do little bits and pieces in between rests. Not going to tackle anything big.

Don't have any pupils here next week, so not quite such a panic to get the place ship shape, but hopefully I can use that extra time to actually tidy properly rather than panic tidy i.e. shove stuff in bags and drawers.

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 03/01/2016 12:42

We're home (weren't too far away). Weather is foul, torrential rain, standing water on lots of roads, bracing myself to go back out and start unloading the car. Sympathies to all the other insomniac Fledglings.

OP posts:
Greymalkin · 03/01/2016 12:43

Hi everyone, hope you are all enjoying your Sunday's (lots of rain here).

We are all just relaxing and enjoying our last day of the 'holidays' until DH and nursery start again tomorrow.

Honu did you use a candle stub to wax your drawers? Or something more 'specialised' (That all sounds so wrong!!!)

Right I'm off to build a castle with DS.

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 03/01/2016 12:44

PA Shock how could he? The darts! Mind you we'll be lucky to get a signal from our Sky dish in this weather. I'm backing Anderson, never liked Lewis.
