Ok. Welcome to the January Fledglings thread. Before we get started we have Some important notices

  1. The fledglings are a long running thread, We are might seem clicky but that is what happens when some of us have been on the same thread for up to 5 years
  2. We are rather partial to new blood Pull up a seat in the naughty corner Grin
  3. Don't assume you can march in and impose your way. We follow the fly lady way and we adapt it to suit our lives and needs. You are welcome to come join us for support and chat, don't assume you know best.
  4. There is more to us than cleaning. If you want to be obsessive about cleaning you will find us and and our interpretation of fly lady frustrating. You might be happier else where.

Right, as harsh as it might seem, it is important to get that out of the way as we expect this January thread to be busier with newbies and there has been problems in the past.

So the fly lady system there are rules and we have adaptations.

  1. NO perfectionism!!!
  2. Something is better than nothing and sometimes good enough really is good enough.
3.This is not about the housework, it is about having more time to do fun stuff. Don't ever feel guilty about doing stuff with the kids over doing the housework. The kids are more important.

And the practical adaptations. We have discussed the Marie Kondo book and the approaches within on previous threads. We are all agree two things: the author does not have kids and that the principles are very good for decluttering and that they can be used to in conjunction with the fly lady system (Marie Kondo to get in control, and fly lady to stay in control). As for the fly lady system there are some of the babysteps and things that are advised that are either "huh, why?" or just don't fit in with the household. We advise a pinch of salt and discretion with a dash of reality thrown in. E.g. if you are a no shoes household then clearly the wearing shoes in the house part of babystep 2 is going to make you go ShockHmm This is where adaptations come in and if past threads are to be gone on this will be discussed and there are various takes on it as and when they arise.

Also for the over enthusiastic newbies to the fly lady site and system everything you need will be posted here in the form of links. There are 3 levels:
Newbie: babysteps - get into these habbit
student: Missions and babysteps once the habits are habit the missions are a piece of cake.
Expert: deep cleaning, missions and babysteps - forget this if you have clutter, seriously.
Oh and for the love of all sanity do not subscribe to the email alerts. Seriously. Just don't.

Jump on board, buckle in and lets kick the butt of January.
Bitchy special brew on the naughty corner bar, natch WinkGrin
do we warn the newbies about the special brew or let them find out for themselves?

Swanhildapirouetting · 09/01/2015 23:15

whoknows I bet that 20 minute Math mum won't necessarily be doing it next month or in a year. These habits can be shortlived Grin Many's the time I have bragged that my children do x and y every day and then lo and behold they've morphed into blobs again.

Which brings me to:
the only things I managed today
put rubbish out
drive dd to school
move recycling to a bigger pile
take laundry upstairs
clean before cleaner came (that was just downstairs)
shake another rug out
stack some books
go to Home Ed football (that was after I became very very badtempered because ds2 couldn't manage to put his shoes on due to knots/they were too small/he couldn't find zip card)
managed to chat to various home ed mums (goodness they all seem very highbrow)
drop SIL's Christmas presents off finally
ds2 played with his cousins (he left saying he was exhausted (two toddlers)
more driving

cooked meatballs for supper and oven chips and broccoli

ds1 had a collapse today and refused to go to school because he couldn't print his homework out because I had hidden the mouse from the computer to avoid ds2 getting it, and I wasn't there because we woke too late and I then had to drive dd to school!!! Talk about all for want of a horse shoe nail Grin Dh made him tidy his room and do homework all day so it worked out quite well in the end. But still!!

Engels don't be superwoman too quickly. Stay in bed with your snuggly baby; give ds1 lots of hugs and enjoy enjoy enjoy. Two boys is such a sweet combination. My younger worshipped the ground the older walked on for at least four years - he used to copy everything he did and watch him with amazed awe. Wonderful news.

DH has gone out til late tonight. I've taken DCs for breakfast at a local boulangerie they've picked a film each to watch this morning while I tidy then they will hopefully help with the playroom this afternoon. DD Is having her birthday party here in a fortnight so i need to get on it!!!

Trazzletoes · 10/01/2015 11:03

15 mins in the hall has tidied that up nicely.

Aagh, all fingers and thumbs

That should have read...

Thanks and good to hear you have a good excuse to go easy today!!

Slowcommotion · 10/01/2015 11:48

Btw, I am firmly ensconced in the naughty corner atm. You'll find me in a recalcitrant heap behind the bar working my way through a heap of Val McDermids Grin. (There's nothing like a grim psychological thriller to take your mind off Mt Washmore Wink) I know I should be Flying but I'm not.

Have not got back in control of house after Christmas. Had incredibly busy time before Christmas, then hosted 9 guests, then travelled, then entertained quite a bit and am still battling through back-log of washing, ironing, bed and room re-arranging and suitcase sorting. Oven needs cleaning. Fridge has been cleared out but needs cleaning. Freezer needs sorting. Rabbit room needs deep clean. Boxes need taking upstairs. Kitchen needs reorganising. Whole house needs putting to rights. Everyone has run out of clean laundry. Dh has started travelling again. More guests coming around 19th. Can't face it and cleaner is away.

Sorry for wibble. I will get grip in a bit!!! Grin Just needed a pause this week. All I've done is washed the minimum, cleared minimal paths through chaos, ensured hwk was done, stroked rabbits and chopped heaps of veg to make soupConfused. It's not enough!!

Slowcommotion · 10/01/2015 12:13

Forgot to say, hope you are surviving the high winds Goth!!

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 10/01/2015 13:14

Sometimes it is needed though. I have done little flying this weekend compared to what was needed. And I have only just woken up. I am not really planning to do a huge amount today although ds does not know this and still thinks we are doing a deep clean of his room today Going to find out what state ds is in having dealt with several mini meltdowns whilst not properly awake.

Tis good you are taking it steady Bitchy. Agree Flying is definitely needed; I just lack the self-motivation to do it Blush

Christmas was a whole load of cooking, bed-making, shopping, choring and stress and I can't quite face going back to the same ....!!

In addition, DD is either ill or extremely tired. Got ready for ballet but felt unable to go. Her playmate friends from Wed are both off school with very high temps so hoping it's not the same thing but suspect it is.

Trazzletoes · 10/01/2015 13:39

Gaaaaah. Just went outside to check whether Christmas tree has been collected (not yet... Taps foot) and noticed a bad smell in the garden. And a large puddle.

Drain for kitchen sink/ dishwasher/ washing machine is blocked.
And stinks.

Trazzletoes · 10/01/2015 13:43

I've just realised I have never cleared drains or gutters.

I suspect this could be a warning that perhaps I ought to...

AliceinWinterWonderland · 10/01/2015 15:15

Drain out front needs to be done this week, so I'll be donning gloves and clearing it out. Ick. But will have to do that when the dcs are in school.

Trazzletoes · 10/01/2015 15:18

The water in mine is going down slowly so I guess it's theoretically possible I can do something myself - how does one go about it?
