Ok. Welcome to the January Fledglings thread. Before we get started we have Some important notices

  1. The fledglings are a long running thread, We are might seem clicky but that is what happens when some of us have been on the same thread for up to 5 years
  2. We are rather partial to new blood Pull up a seat in the naughty corner Grin
  3. Don't assume you can march in and impose your way. We follow the fly lady way and we adapt it to suit our lives and needs. You are welcome to come join us for support and chat, don't assume you know best.
  4. There is more to us than cleaning. If you want to be obsessive about cleaning you will find us and and our interpretation of fly lady frustrating. You might be happier else where.

Right, as harsh as it might seem, it is important to get that out of the way as we expect this January thread to be busier with newbies and there has been problems in the past.

So the fly lady system there are rules and we have adaptations.

  1. NO perfectionism!!!
  2. Something is better than nothing and sometimes good enough really is good enough.
3.This is not about the housework, it is about having more time to do fun stuff. Don't ever feel guilty about doing stuff with the kids over doing the housework. The kids are more important.

And the practical adaptations. We have discussed the Marie Kondo book and the approaches within on previous threads. We are all agree two things: the author does not have kids and that the principles are very good for decluttering and that they can be used to in conjunction with the fly lady system (Marie Kondo to get in control, and fly lady to stay in control). As for the fly lady system there are some of the babysteps and things that are advised that are either "huh, why?" or just don't fit in with the household. We advise a pinch of salt and discretion with a dash of reality thrown in. E.g. if you are a no shoes household then clearly the wearing shoes in the house part of babystep 2 is going to make you go ShockHmm This is where adaptations come in and if past threads are to be gone on this will be discussed and there are various takes on it as and when they arise.

Also for the over enthusiastic newbies to the fly lady site and system everything you need will be posted here in the form of links. There are 3 levels:
Newbie: babysteps - get into these habbit
student: Missions and babysteps once the habits are habit the missions are a piece of cake.
Expert: deep cleaning, missions and babysteps - forget this if you have clutter, seriously.
Oh and for the love of all sanity do not subscribe to the email alerts. Seriously. Just don't.

Jump on board, buckle in and lets kick the butt of January.
Bitchy special brew on the naughty corner bar, natch WinkGrin
do we warn the newbies about the special brew or let them find out for themselves?

We had a lot of water fall in a very short space of time, it backed a few bits up as it over loaded the system and gradually drained away. Could this be part of the issue trazzles? that all of the drains in the area are a bit over loaded atm with the current storm system.?

OP posts:
Trazzletoes · 10/01/2015 16:04

Potentially, I suppose, but it is also thick with something black and smelly, as far as I can tell.

In all honesty we haven't actually had that much rain today...

Trazzletoes · 10/01/2015 16:09

I've just gone and checked again and the water is much lower but the drain area is full of the black sludgey stuff. I don't know how to be a homeowner, clearly!

Trazzletoes · 10/01/2015 16:28

I'm decluttering the playroom and feeling a little guilty about all the stuff I'm taking out that they have never played with.

In all fairness, we have an obscene number of jigsaws and dominoes (what do you give a child who can't get out of bed) but I still feel bad that we have numerous ones that are unopened Sad

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 10/01/2015 16:50

WOuld a local hospital department take the unopen ones for their stock of stuff to keep kids occupied whilst on ward? Then you know that they are going to goo use and realistically you can't use 6 sets of dominoes and not every kid likes jigsaws so seriously don't feel guilty.

OP posts:
Trazzletoes · 10/01/2015 16:52

Yes they will. DS has a blood test tomorrow so I can drop them off on the Cancer ward but I still feel a bit crap about it!

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 10/01/2015 17:04

Don't Trazzles. It is a risk gift givers take, you can't guarentee it that it is not something they already have or someone else won't give. Seriously don't feel crap about it is not your fault.

BlessThisMess · 10/01/2015 20:10

Have achieved 2 major tasks today:

Took down Christmas tree and put away almost all decorations. Need a new box to store the rest in so still a small pile in the living room.

Listed stable mats for sale on local FB horse page and sold them for the same price I paid 2 years ago!

Have also done morning routine and cooked a healthy dinner so feel it's been a productive day!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 10/01/2015 20:19

Linzer - I didn't reply to you about the running, sorry! I finally gave up when I developed my prolapses a couple of years ago, I could do gentle jogging but I'm trying to lose weight forst, so I mainly walk and swim for now. And I have developed an expensive nail varnish habit since that thread too!

Trazzles - I'm sure the people who gave those things to you would rather they went to other children who are in hospital than stayed unused in your cupboards.

Not much Flying today, took DS to hockey this morning and spent an hour stood in wind and rain watching (not too bad, other parents to chat to). Home for lunch then out shopping, I then took DD to the cinema to see Annie, while DH took DS swimming. Loved Annie - has anyone else seen it? Was a bit far fetched but very enjoyable, the actor playing Annie was great.

Got to get stuck into my OU essay tonight, I have been faffing about with it for about a week, spent a lot of time going back over the notes on how to write essays and now feel a bit more as though I know what I'm doing.

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 10/01/2015 20:35

Ta da
Encourage ds to make progress on tidying his room - It is no where near tidy but it is better
Insist and bribe ds to do his homework so it can be submitted early
Resolve a computer problem
create a small mountain of crochet squares

Funny how despite ds doing the sorting of room it has taken so much of my day simply because I need to hover, encourage and generally guide ds in his task. Am hoping this will improve over time. But right now am taking solice in the fact the progress was made without major screaming and shouting.

ARRGH, falling behind with the thread (but still Flying)

SC it feels bloody cold here, but the wind has eased. Thursday night was unbelievable, a satellite dish was pulled out of a chimney from near us. It took the sandstone block with it! If it had hit someone it would have killed them, the houses are 4 storeys high.

GoingGoingGoth · 10/01/2015 21:02

Just seen this on a friend's FB page Laundry is the enemy of possibility

Trazzletoes · 10/01/2015 21:33

I've done enough tidying today. I'm settled on the sofa with the start of a crochet blanket, watching the delicious Tom Hiddleston in Avengers Assemble. Happy Smile

threeislovely · 10/01/2015 23:05

Evening everyone. We have had a lovely family day out and then came home and did some jobs to hopefully free up tomorrow.

ta das
Hoovered throughout
Cleaned litter tray
Mopped floors
Cleared utility cupboard and sorted
Fixed iroining board
Did ironing
Rebooted laundry
Reloaded dishwasher
Sorted recycling

Feeling quite virtuous now!

SecretLimonadeDrinker · 11/01/2015 00:05

Evening all, hope you're having good weekends!

Ta das
Hoovered
Slow cooked dinner
Empty dishwasher this morning and washed everything else up as I went along
Bedding washed and back on bed
Towels washed and back in bathroom
Replaced toothbrushes/toothbrush heads
Tidied living room/playroom
First DS swimming lesson of the year
Finished some work

So pleased I join this thread, had a message from a friend tonight, can they come over for a visit tomorrow morning. This would normally result in mad panic and frantic cleaning/tidying, instead all I need to do is pop to the shop for more supplies for lunch!

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 11/01/2015 02:21

Ok here are the links:

Sunday is renew your spirit day

baby step 11 is inspirational page for the control journal No one is going to say anything if you ignore this one but please do read it, sometimes we all need an inspirational quote and truthfully we all know that "you can't clean clutter you have to get rid of the clutter to clean"

Launch pad it is the launch pad that will let you see what is coming up for the week in theory so if you are feeling a bit eager click the launch pad link and have a look. Also if my links fail again you can find everything you need from the launch pad page (the babysteps are a link right at the bottom in a list).

Summary

So this week has been busy, eventful and saw an awful lot of rather focus chatter. We have had the first thread baby of 2015 - Congratulations Engels - discussed running and fitness, plus there was the installation of a wine fountain in the naughty corner amidst discussions of the perils of perfectionism.

Whoknows has been ferrying the dc around to lots of activities, battling essays and making plans to get the dc's academic skills progressing. And some how found time to fit in donating blood.

PMPY returned to work reluctantly and the tricky life work balance that can face us all.

PA was educating us on the world of darts

Ellie has been enjoying the benefits of a shared house hold on the housework. Just don't get too used to it, when you move on it will be a bit of a shock to the system.

Goth has been flying, riding out the extreme weather and admitted that the thread is a bit much to keep up with when life is busy.

Saturn was brave mad enough to sigh up for the emails seriously we don't recommend it but each to their own and was predicting work to be crazy busy. But she did managed a good declutter before the post new year return to work.

Nicknacks had a rather straight into deep water start to the year. Hopefully getting back into the swing of things helps with your mindset. It
happens sometimes, as long as it is a brief patch you should be fine. It is when the job is only about the money for long periods then you need another time. Just remember you are human and will have good days and bad days. hope you had a restorative weekend.

MakingChanges Has been flying and brought up the issue of poisettia. Apparently you can over summer them and they will still be alive next
winter Shock

Shannaratiger has been, in her words, flying and reading just not typing. Always nice to see her when she does the typing bit though.

Greymalkin made use of her ds free time and was really rather productive

Toffee has been home edding and making progress towards ds attending his new school

Engels had the best ta da list this week. It was a simple list reading "had baby" Grin

BlessThisMess has been plugging away at flying and successfully dechristmasified plus decluttered some stable mats.

Saymwa has been working hard to get her head around all the aspects of flying and had some good lists

Bin85 discovered the benefits of focusing on one thing at a time and how much you can actually achieve in 15mins

Feetheart has been up to her eyeballs in work and life. Psst the important bit you might have missed was Engels had her baby, it was a boy.

threeislovely found how motivating and encouraging the thread can be when motivation is struggling

AnnField found that sometime you do stuff on the to do list, and sometimes you don't.

Castle has had ongoing work on her house and assured us that she is putting her feet up whilst awaiting the arrival of her baby.

MrsMook tackled her kitchen and then made observations about how her life will impact on her flying. Our advice build it into your routine. If you have busy days then only aim to do the bare minimal, and more on the more relax days work wise. It is a trial and error process but it is totally worth figuring out the specifics which work for you.

Trazzles brought good news about her ds and spent saturday flying hard. Thankfully she is also remembering to try to avoid burn out.

Linzer has been cycling in sub zero temperatures Shock I think we can safely say that she is crazier braver than most of us. She has also been pretty fab at answering questions too. Flowers

Blue Reassured us that perfectionism was not a problem

Whispers is off on holiday and whilst might be about to partake in the wine fountain and but will be taking a break from flying.

Rufus was asking about the detailed clean aspect of flying. If you want the detailed cleaning links posted do say and I will happily post them

CrickeyBlimey has been plugging away at lists and being rather productive. But it was her idea to turn the hole into a wine feature.

Mercury started the week with an important meeting and having finished last week with work load being very heavy we hope that it is lightening up a tad so she can escape work induced headaches.

Bugrit was feeling poorly and battle DIY type stuff. Hope you are feeling better and that you managed to get things fixed.

ScotsWhaHae managed the holy grail that is empty washing baskets Envy

SecretLimonadeDrinker joined us and discovered the benefit of keeping up with the babysteps -panice free unexpected visitor situation. It is the holy grail that most of us are aiming for. Well done.

Violetta marked her place Show a little respect and clean your marks off Grin. But seriously you can bookmark your position on a thread so you can lurk without posting. Or you can just come join us and post.

SC returned from her travels and understandably required a bit of down time, despite the return to normal life and all of it's demands.

Swan has been teenager wrangling and dishing out wise advice.

DizzyDay has been discovering the perils of a 3am bedtime and supporting her dd through the disappointments of just missing out on selection for a sporting team.

Alice has had a week of appointments and plans of DIY work. Apparently we have been warned Shock

Scaryg joined us briefly, we hope to see her again.

Donniemurdo also joined us and is doing a mixture of Kondo and flying.

Bitchy has had burn out and as a result not really achieved anything. She feels too crap to be frustrated by this but hopes to be feeling better next week.

Great round up and thank you for doing the links, Bitchy Thanks Grin

We're back home today, it's been a great weekend. Just realised that the house was looking great before we left, so we will get back to a lovely clean house - can't wait!!
Will do a longer reply later, hope everyone has a great day!

threeislovely · 11/01/2015 11:30

What a totally fab round-up Bitchy; particularly brill given it was achieved at three in the morning!!! Thanks

Btw Bitchy I think the encouraging and supervising of dc tasks is one of the most time consuming and draining bits of parenting - so well done for helping your ds to do his room - like you, am banking on all the hassle being worth it in the end and paying off long-term!!

Glad violent weather easing a bit Goth although Shock about flying satellites

Sorry about your dd just missing out Dizzy after County team selection after all of her (and your!) hard work. Somehow missed that earlier down thread. Losing out by 0.4 of a second must be tough!! She certainly deserves some compensatory medals after that!!

Whispers *SecretLemonadeDrinker' and others - great to hear how the system is working for you - really cheering!!!

Good luck with OU work Whoknows

We've had a very quiet weekend. Dh has been working. DD is ill on sofa with chest infection. And I've achieved very little except essentials (and playing endless games of battleships and alternative games of solitaire (if that makes sense) with dd. We've got visitors arriving Thurs night, dh is travelling non-stop, and the following weekend is totally booked up too, so it's nice to have a weekend free, but slightly disappointing that dd ill because it meant we weren't able to do a lot with the freedom ifyswim. But there, I'm whinging again ... sorry!! Grin Still, hopefully the prospect of guests arriving in four days will move me off my substantial rear and

BlessthisMess thank you for mentioning that you were still organising storage of Christmas decorations... makes me feel a lot better!! Smile

Sorry to hear about the headaches Mercury¨hope you are OK

Makingchanges I always murder a poinsettia every year without fail Grin

Engels hope you and baby-Engels doing well!! Take it steady and nest!!

Hope you are doing ok too Castle

Big feathery waves to everyrone I've missed. Dh, bless him, has just made beef tea for dd so going to drink that and watch re-runs of Sherlock... .

Enjoy your Sunday evenings everybody!

Slowcommotion · 11/01/2015 16:42

oh dear, that should have read 'rear end' not 'rear and' Grin

and 'on' County team selection

Will preview before posting one of these days ....

Slowcommotion · 11/01/2015 16:43

Btw - Blessthismess - meant to say ... dd and I are both horse-obsessed but living in big city so only ride at weekends. Do you have resident horses? [nosy (dead-jealous) emoticon]

elliepac · 11/01/2015 17:12

Checking in. Meant to have a quiet weekend...didn't really pan out that way.

Friday night I went for dinner at a friend from works house and then stayed over at my work bf's house. Consumed rather a large amount of vino. Saturday was spent rather hungover and then an old school friend who I haven't properly seen for a year rang and went for a quick coffee with her which turned into a marathon 4 hour catch-up, lots of coffee and lunch. Was lovely. Today has been mainly marking and then bf and her dc's popped round for coffee.

So...no flying but lots of socialisingGrinGrinGrin.

Best go and get dinner. Back later.

Swanhildapirouetting · 11/01/2015 17:23

Good day today but yesterday I felt a bit like SC - suddenly far too much stuff happening and house not budging from a position of self righteous resentment Grin The moment when there really are no clean underpants and it is simply because they didn't get washed because something else took priority..Hmm

Took 3 kids to two different Stage Schools yesterday to start new term of Sat morning off (that's for me and Dh Wink 3 hours out of house should do nicely. However this week this meant actually taking and dropping off both sets of children and persuading them go etc (when they were not quite sure they wanted to) Combined with me trying to keep fit and not driving everywhere and then organising lunch I am knackered by simple things like just finding clothes that look respectable for all three.

Then we had a debacle in Sweaty Betty. Dd needed some tracksuit bottoms. Shop looked like it had said items...Silly me I hadn't quite understood the concept of designer sportswear and it was only when I got to the till after a lot of trying on stuff with dd that I noticed the price of said tracksuit bottoms. £95!!!!Shock Omg????Do people actually love running that much? Needless to say we slank out of the shop completely humiliated as it was clear from the horror on our faces that we were not exactly sports "aware". Luckily dd saw the funny side. To be fair to SB I know it is a high end shop for enthusiasts but still I hadn't realised quite how much people will pay for high quality items. I feel like I am stuck in the 70's wearing high visibility anorak..Sad

Brightens up.. maybe nail varnish is the answer.

Children all happy at stage schools though, ds1 especially so.

Today we had another battle to get ds1 to confirmation enrolment mass but luckily he went.

Everyone went to the park, dd to a party, dh to a Book fair, then met boys for lunch out as now having to bribe them with promise of lunch out in order to get them to take exercise Blush

housework
washed all the backlog of clothes and sheets
kitchen worktops
cat food bowls
recycling
swept floor
shook out rugs in playroom
cleaned out small freezer
changed our sheets

exercise
took some

diet
not going well due to excess cheese which still remains in fridge!
