Ok. Welcome to the January Fledglings thread. Before we get started we have Some important notices

  1. The fledglings are a long running thread, We are might seem clicky but that is what happens when some of us have been on the same thread for up to 5 years
  2. We are rather partial to new blood Pull up a seat in the naughty corner Grin
  3. Don't assume you can march in and impose your way. We follow the fly lady way and we adapt it to suit our lives and needs. You are welcome to come join us for support and chat, don't assume you know best.
  4. There is more to us than cleaning. If you want to be obsessive about cleaning you will find us and and our interpretation of fly lady frustrating. You might be happier else where.

Right, as harsh as it might seem, it is important to get that out of the way as we expect this January thread to be busier with newbies and there has been problems in the past.

So the fly lady system there are rules and we have adaptations.

  1. NO perfectionism!!!
  2. Something is better than nothing and sometimes good enough really is good enough.
3.This is not about the housework, it is about having more time to do fun stuff. Don't ever feel guilty about doing stuff with the kids over doing the housework. The kids are more important.

And the practical adaptations. We have discussed the Marie Kondo book and the approaches within on previous threads. We are all agree two things: the author does not have kids and that the principles are very good for decluttering and that they can be used to in conjunction with the fly lady system (Marie Kondo to get in control, and fly lady to stay in control). As for the fly lady system there are some of the babysteps and things that are advised that are either "huh, why?" or just don't fit in with the household. We advise a pinch of salt and discretion with a dash of reality thrown in. E.g. if you are a no shoes household then clearly the wearing shoes in the house part of babystep 2 is going to make you go ShockHmm This is where adaptations come in and if past threads are to be gone on this will be discussed and there are various takes on it as and when they arise.

Also for the over enthusiastic newbies to the fly lady site and system everything you need will be posted here in the form of links. There are 3 levels:
Newbie: babysteps - get into these habbit
student: Missions and babysteps once the habits are habit the missions are a piece of cake.
Expert: deep cleaning, missions and babysteps - forget this if you have clutter, seriously.
Oh and for the love of all sanity do not subscribe to the email alerts. Seriously. Just don't.

Jump on board, buckle in and lets kick the butt of January.
Bitchy special brew on the naughty corner bar, natch WinkGrin
do we warn the newbies about the special brew or let them find out for themselves?

Good luck, Engels!

WhoKnows I think I've added you as a friend on fitbit (possibly twice Grin), but you don't seem to be showing on my list... am also finding the messaging bit slightly confusing as I can't tell whether my messages have sent or not, or see my sent messages.

Off to collect DD2 now; Thursday is my chauffeuring afternoon, with church youth group/Red Cross children's club (DS, who's still deciding which he wants to go to) followed by music theory (DD2) followed by scouts (DD1), all taking place more or less consecutively.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 08/01/2015 18:02

Messages received Linzer. Did you keep up with the running at all? Seems liek a long time since we did C25K together. That sounds a bit like my Thursday, DD has drama from 5 till 7, DS has Scouts from 7 till 9, I have got reciprocal arrangements with friends over the pickups and drop offs, but if DD's friend's mum appears with her just after 7 and I'm not back from the Scouts run because one of the others was a bit later getting ready (4 of them walk together) it gets very complicated. Even more so on the one week in 3 or so (it seems) that the Scouts need to be taken somewhere other than the Scout hut. Luckily drama doesn't start back till next week, so just Scouts tonight.

Slowcommotion · 08/01/2015 18:38

OOohhh Engels how exciting!!! Will have fingers and toes crossed for you for tomorrow!! Good luck and hope all goes well!!

And congrats on your "favourable" cervix Grin. True to form, mine was incompetent Grin.

Again, thank you so much Swan and Bitchy and everyone for all for very supportive Flying comments and advice. And yes, I definitely do have to (a) take one thing at a time and go back to basics and (b) get out and do more walking. As ever, this thread is a life saver!!

And thank you Linzer and Whoknows for Fitbit advice. Don't think it is for me but can see how useful it could be.

Didn't get a whole lot more Flying done than basics tbh but it's a start. And feel in a bit better state of mind because went to see priest for Comfirmation meeting this evening, and was all geared up to disagree/protest/challenge (had made the completely wrong assumption that he would be incredibly traditional and pompous and right wing) and in reality found him to be absolutely lovely and life-affirming and positive and humble.

Then dd and I went out for a pizza relaxed in the knowledge that all hwk has been done because Thurs is hwk club night.

Only slightly negative point... bumped in to dd's form teacher and expressed my concern about maths and was told that it was not a lack of comprehension that is the problem, but the fact that dd is not working hard enough. Oh dear.

Heigh ho....tomorrow is another day!

Have a lovely evening Fleglings!!

LinzerTorte · 08/01/2015 18:40

No, I keep restarting C25k but then something (usually work) gets in the way and I find myself having to start from scratch again several months later. I never really got back into it again after the problems I had with my knee; the brace and properly fitted running shoes helped for a while, but then I didn't go running over the summer (a few years ago now) and it all started up again. I do miss our old C25k thread though, and often think about it when I'm putting on nail polish on.

We normally lift share for scouts, but the other girl is ill so we have to do both drop-off and pick-up tonight. At least DH is usually home to do the scout pick-up at 8am (all three of them go, on separate nights); I'm not sure I could face going out again tonight.

threeislovely · 08/01/2015 18:46

Evening all,

Totally shattered still.....

Hoovered house
Cleans kitchen and bathrooms
Made kids dinner

Need to make dhs dinner
Finish ironing
Put washing away
Finish a scary amount of work.....

LinzerTorte · 08/01/2015 18:52

x-post SC - I suppose, to put a positive spin on it, at least it sounds like DD has the ability and could get there if she made the effort. Of course, getting DC to make the effort is often easier said than done! Glad you had such a positive experience with the priest; he sounds completely different from ours...

three Good luck with the work. I often used to work in the evenings but now avoid it unless it's absolutely necessary as I just can't concentrate like I used to be able to and it takes me twice as long to get things done.

elliepac · 08/01/2015 20:03

Evening all.

Infinitely superior day at work today so am back to feeling relatively happy. DD has gone to bed without playing up and all is right with the world.

Small ta da:-

Work
Dinner
Dishwasher
Washing put away
Washer on

The one small benefit of living with dmum is that she does do quite a bit of tidying/cleaning during the day (she is retired) and therefore there wasn't a huge amount to do.

engels how very exciting. Sending much love and good wishes to you and your family over the upcoming days.

whoknows and linzer another lapsed C25k here. I lost it when I had the aliens on my ovaries last year and have not managed to get back on it. Am back on MFP though and am going to attempt to re-start C25k in the next week or so. I have to find a new running spot now am living with dmum though.

Nicknacks · 08/01/2015 20:21

Glad you had a better day ellie Smile

I've had a busy start to the year work wise, but I hate to say I've just been thinking of the money. Shock Childcarers shouldn't think like that should they? Oops!

Flying woes the sitting room has stayed decluttered for weeks now- there's nothing in here!
Kitchen- dh has bought a new gadget so we've had to have a turnaround. It has also meant the kitchen has stayed tidier this week (though I do need to do it now).

Ta da
Post letters and birthday gift to relative
Fixed doorbell
Tidy everywhere for cleaner Blush
Laundry almost up to date
Decluttered medicine box

I know it's not popular on here but I've started slim fast. I'm very overweight and need something drastic, it's going well so far. I've also got a pedometer and challenge is to walk 10,000 steps a day. Basic I know but that's the level I'm at right now.

engels I'm thinking of you this morning! I hope this baby isn't too much longer SmileFlowers

Sorry for lack of personals, I need to get cracking on my evening routine. big waves

WhispersOfWickedness · 08/01/2015 20:26

Ooo, lovely, Engels, you'll have your lovely baby here in no time Grin will be thinking of you in the morning :)

Not too bad today, got most of my routines done and 15 mins in the kitchen, just go the bin and the floor to clean tomorrow and it'll be done :)
My friend is coming to feed the cats over the weekend, so that is the motivation I need to get it done! Annoying to lose two days in the next zone with being away, I should go and have a look at what I'm missing really (I'm thinking bathroom...)

Crikeyblimey · 08/01/2015 20:51

Hi everyone.

Well, but rubbish today. Although I did work from home today so got one load of washing washed, dried and put away (small ironing pile has developed as a result).
Kitchen sparkling (dh again)
Loo, bath and shower cleaned (dh again)
Kitchen swept - that was me
Tea cooked - me again
Last minute invitees to ds's party telephones - me
Online shopping done - dh

To do:
Ds to pack school bag
Slob in front of tv with small (who am I kidding) glass of wine.

Happy Thursday everyone.

BlessThisMess · 08/01/2015 21:20

Ta-Das:
Have finally managed to clean out fish tank
And update finances
And clean out piles from my side of the bed,
And contact mediator re EHC plan,
So feeling very productive today.

Also feeling smug from discovering that I did my tax return last July (most unlike me!)

Good luck Engels for tomorrow!

Greymalkin · 08/01/2015 21:54

Evening all, it's great to see lots of the newbies coming on here with their lists! Just don't burn out. And the discussion up thread about perfectionism was a handy reminder to me too.

My DS stayed with MIL last night and today so I got a fair bit done:

Tidied for cleaner, put out all her 'equipment' for her
Cats fed
Stripped bed, sheets in w/m
8 hours at work
Picked up DS
Hung up first wash, 2nd wash in, about to hang up
Dry laundry folded and away
Packed bags x2 for tomorrow
Clothes laid out for tomorrow
Cats fed
Cooked dinner
DS bedtime routine
Dishwasher
Lunch made for tomorrow
Filled out nursery forms
About to go to bed with my book

Engles really hope it all goes well, lots of positive vibes to you

Whoknows, Linzer, Ellie and Nicknacks, hope your healthy eating and exercise regimes go well, I need to do the same, just CBA! Would rather curl up on the sofa with my book and a packet of biscuits Blush

dizzyday07 · 08/01/2015 23:37

I seem to be a day behind adding my lists. Serves me right I suppose from seemingly going to bed at 3am every night (after dozing off on the sofa) and school starting Tuesday! Confused

Wed. Ta Da

  • Room rescue of lounge
  • Hoovered through downstairs - lounge, dining, hall & playroom
  • Load of towels laundered and hung to dry
  • DD to swim training

Today hasn't been much more productive!

  • Yesterday's dry towels folded and put away
  • Laundry load in and hung to dry
  • DD and friends collected from school
  • D/W loaded and pit on
  • Sink shined
  • Pinwheel sandwiches and flapjacks made for school library opening tomorrow

Good luck Engels - keeping fingers crossed for a swift arrival for you (DS was 11 days late and 36 hours in labour - but he was my first!)

We have just heard that DD has missed out on being picked for the County Championships for the second year running. Sad They changed all the age groups this year so she had to enter as an 11 year old although just having turned 10! Although she was top 10 in the rankings for the 50m & 100m Breaststroke and top 15 for the 200m, it has been a nerve-wracking wait as we didn't know how many they would pick - turns out it was 8! She was 9th on the list for the 50m and lost out by 0.4 of a second so that has been particularly hard. We have other galas planned for the months ahead so hopefully she will pick up a medal or two as way of some compensation.

SecretLimonadeDrinker · 08/01/2015 23:38

Ohh, a wine fountain!

It's been a more productive day than I thought

Ta das
Bought Christmas wrapping paper for next year - 3 for 2 & 75% off in Clintons
Picked up coat from dry cleaners - muddy cuddle with DS after he was scared by a swan!
Returned shirt that fell apart after worn once.
Cleaned hob
Cleaned kitchen counters
Loaded d/w
One lot of washing done and second in the machine ready to go on tomorrow.
Bag packed and outfit sorted for tomorrow
Downstairs hoovered
Downstairs dusted
Playroom tidied

However not an early night as DH has forgotten his keys (still not home) and I've got to be in work early tomorrow.

threeislovely · 08/01/2015 23:40

Right, feeling happier now that I have cracked most of the work. I really want to have a weekend off!

Thanks linzer for the the luck, it really helped to motivate me.

Good luck Engels, nothing like lovely baby snuggles.

Thanks grey for the reminder again not be too much of a perfectionist.

Glad that ellie had a good day.

Managed to finish most of the work list tonight (although it still has 25 things on it?!?!)
Might try for the ironing and washing in the morning.... Fingers crossed.

Night all

ToffeeWhirl · 09/01/2015 00:09

Engels - best of luck tomorrow. Looking forward to hearing your good news soon.

Lots of impressive lists on here today. Not sure I can match up. The main achievement today was getting DS1 to visit his new school. He did so well! He couldn't cope with the noisy, busy parts of the school, but the SENDCO respected that and just took him to the quieter parts. We have made another appointment for the same time next week. Fingers crossed.

Apart from that...

Usual morning routine
Home ed - Maths, spelling, handwriting
Dropped DS2 at MIL's whilst we took DS1 to visit school
Visited MIL to collect DS2
Quick shop for food
Drank coffee to stay awake
Cooked dinner
No wine (Day 8)
Five-minute room rescue in our bedroom
Unloaded d/w and reloaded
Collected countless glasses from bedrooms and washed them all up
Shined sink
Cleared out litter trays
Dh mended crack in kitchen sink
Bedtime routines

Aiming for another decent bedtime tonight (this is early for me), so will sign off now.

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 09/01/2015 01:40

launch pad

Went out, it was lovely but forgot the one thing that i went into Tesco for on the way home. Got the other non essential bit but not the you needed that bit I was considering doing stuff but actually now that I am eating melted baby bels - would seriously recommend this!!! - I am feeling sleepy and ready for bed. Which is a nice feeling. Ds came home from school in a much less stressed state than he has been in for a while. Which is nice. Busy day tomo so I guess i should try to sleep whilst tired else it will be 6am before i sleep. night.

Good morning All,
Quick post here before starting my morning routine and looking at mission. Thanks again Bitchy.
Can someone explain what the Flylady means by 'hot spots '?

Thanks.
Back soonSmile

Saymwa · 09/01/2015 06:45

Back already Grin

When you get time Bitchy, today's links aren't linked ...

Sleep first though , do Wink.

LinzerTorte · 09/01/2015 06:56

Saymwa A hotspot is an area that tends to attract clutter, e.g. a clear surface where you put something down, then someone else will come along and put something down on top, and before you know it you have a pile of clutter there. One of our major hotspots is the bottom of the stairs (really must deal with it later).

Quick list for this morning before I start work:

Morning routine
Mission
15 min decluttering
Paid work
Invoices
Write thank you card

LinzerTorte · 09/01/2015 06:58

Flylady's definition of a hotspot is here.

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 09/01/2015 08:24

Thanks Linzer Flowers

Oh fuck. Sorry. will do links when I have chucked ds into school. So they will appear by 9:30 Blush
