Huge thanks to Blue for leading the thread throughout November (and to SC for such a copy and paste-able OP Grin) Thanks Thanks Thanks

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and wine and cake along the way.

Flylady link is here

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework, which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don't be put off by the barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:
(1)No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine
(2)You are never behind just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
(3) It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking lists but don't let that worry you! Do what you can, anything is better then nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey – some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome!

Sorry Bitchy didn't twig that your ds wasn't with you tonight which must be hard. Hope you can take some solace in some virtual Wine and fledgling solidarity!! And Cake of course Xmas Smile

ToffeeWhirl · 25/12/2014 00:17

ta da

Everything packed and ready in the hall for our journey first thing tomorrow
House clean and tidy Shock
Box of cat stuff in the hall for the neighbours when they pop in to feed the cats

Thought I'd been so efficient in packing the stockings ready to put out until DS2 asked me where his empty stocking was. I really couldn't face unpacking it all and I know he knows it's me, so I said Father Christmas had made an error and pre-packed the stocking this year and it would magically appear full of presents in the morning. Luckily, Ds2 thought that was funny .

DS2 didn't settle to sleep till nearly midnight (too excited), but DS1 is still up. One more reminder to him, then I'm off to bed.

Hope all of you have a very Happy Christmas.

Swanhildapirouetting · 25/12/2014 00:55

It's sooo late - but dd is still not asleep. She started to giggle when I was creaking outside her room (my bones not the floorboards Hmm Wretched child Grin

However all the stockings are filled at least.

We have had quite a fun day - helped by new attempt at PROPER CHRISTMAS EVE WALK (between 11 and 3pm) Tempers much improved by that - we always have a bit of tension before the 4pm German Christmas "event" (biscuits and grandparent presents) However this passed off alright and then we sang folk songs in turn and played a quick round of charades (by this time I was quite tipsy from a glass of Prosecco) Ds2 and I were crying with laughter. Dd flounced off though - we are having trial by mobile phone and have had to ban it between 1 and 4 every day as she is completely glued to it (and disagreeable as a result)

Red cabbage made
Potatoes soaking (pre-peeled)
presents wrapped
potted up succulents for dh
posted cards and delivered most of them by hand (exercise)
dcs did some delivering for me
made paper chains
watched Professor Branestawm (or rather ds2 did)
supper of rice and canapés from Morrisons (and green salad carrots etc)

Toffee enjoy your mum's house - hope ds1 manages it too
Engels I usually find relations quite stressful at Christmas but ironically this year when there are none ds2 is asking who is coming to visit (he obviously misses that party feeling Confused
Ellie children basically do not like change but after a bit change becomes familiar and not change at all ifysim. It must be difficult if dh is at your old house.

sigh - I had better try and solve the problem of dd's special Father Christmas present now - she knows I bought the guitar and was snooping around for it earlier in the week but I think I was clearly inspired by Father Christmas - wasn't I? Wink

who You handled the spat with ds really well. It is hard to take the time to cope with these wrangles. I loved the list of things in dd's bed - sounds like the Magic Faraway Tree up there Grin

Swanhildapirouetting · 25/12/2014 00:58

That post took a long time to write - dd is hopefully asleep now!!!!! I promised dh without fail I would be upstairs by 1am...Blush and now I have to write a spidery Father Christmas label for the guitar.

ToffeeWhirl · 25/12/2014 01:05

I'm still up too, Swan (and scoffing After Eights Blush), but really am off to bed now. If DS1 is still awake he won't get his stocking till morning. And yes, fingers crossed he'll manage the journey ok tomorrow. He has had plenty of warning and knows we're not going for long.

Night all. And Happy Christmas.

Castlelough · 25/12/2014 06:21

Happy Christmas lovely fledglingsSmile. A civilised get up of 7 here this morning and two very lucky and spoilt dc's. Apparently I thought it was a good idea to buy DS a drum set. I was wrongGrin. Apart from that I appear now to be living in a Frozen house.

Calm before the storm here. Guests due anytime and lunch is at that point where in about 30 minutes it will be all systems go.

Have a fabulous day.

Been there and back already today. Tomo's journey is dependant on what happens over night and will let you know. But as it is a competition it will be long ass drive, hang about for ages, followed by long ass drive.

Trazzletoes · 26/12/2014 18:08
