The Hoarders Anonymous Thread. Sorting It Out.

There was a thread that I was involved in some time ago which was started by someone trying to understand why her Dh kept so much 'stuff' and couldn't throw anything away.

The thread quickly turned into a support thread for many MN hoarders and there was a large support network that evolved from that thread.

Eventually, the thread died and with it, certainly my 'support and encouragement mates' circle...

From other threads where lovely Mumsnetters have supported and given rl help, there have come other hoarders, untidy people and those who are just plain stuck in a rut admitting they have a problem. People like me that have become emotionally attached to stuff and it has taken over their homes and their lives. People that cannot cope after loss of different types (parent, relationship, job etc) and it just turns into one big nightmare ~ it certainly did for me following my relationship breakdown, my Dad dying and another nine people in my life passing away inside 11 months.
Personally, I feel that being unable to let anyone in through my front door means that no one can hurt me; I've pulled up the drawbridge, so no one can get to me and shoot me again.

I've always been a bit of a collector of things. I'm a make do and mend type and I can make something out of nothing. Trouble is that once I started to lose important things (people mainly) from my life, I felt unable to let anything made of something go...what if I could never get or have another?! that'd be terrible right?

So! that is a part of my story and here is a thread of support and encouragement (I hope) for others feeling overwhelmed by their hoarding, clutter and stuff. I am hoping that I can get my life sorted out and that there are others that will come along on the journey and perhaps also sort out their homes and lives.

I want to raise my drawbridge and invite friends in. Anyone else? :)

Need to try harder will find house tomorrow!

Solo · 18/01/2015 23:40

How are you doing Babies? :)
Last week, I finally found some of my kitchen counter!
Packed most of Ds's clothing into a box.

Must do the same with a bit of mine and Dd's although most of mine will stay in the wardrobes.
I want to get Ds's old bed frame out of the house (it will be made into a wood store I think) and get my bed out and over to my brothers house as they could do with a divan and it saves me offering it on freecycle.

Want to get the old carpet out of the second bedroom and the final wardrobe out of there too.
I seem to have done so little in recent weeks and I'm quite annoyed that I haven't.

Hello. I have been absent from this thread for a while due to various stuff going on. Should come back. Will try again. (Have namechanged several times by the way).

Will read it later this evening and make an effort. Simply have to. And I have found this thread supportive previously.

Solo · 22/01/2015 15:48

I started today. ..long way to go!

Solo · 28/01/2015 00:50

Yay you!!
I did a bit on Monday too. I also got rid of some baby cups/plate/bowl and some plastic crappy small lidded bowls and some big old yoghurt pots I was saving to put homemade soups into the freezer in. I made room in the cupboard for all my bottles of wine that I don't drink Hmm. Folded a load of clean clothing (not yet put away) and doing more tomorrow (Weds).

Oh yes! I also went through Dd's clothing and put another load into a box to go into storage for now. A bit of mine and Ds's clothes in there too.
Cleared the clothes horse exercise bike of coats and things and hung them in the porch.
Much more to do!

Dismantled the last wardrobe in the second bedroom today.
Put all the books in that bedroom into a box (too heavy though, so will have to deal with that differently).
Took down the last baton that I couldn't get before due to wardrobe.
Sorted through the rubbish my son left in that room Angry.
Sorted a few bits in the main bedroom.
One wash load done.

Hello. Have emptied a storage unit and took some stuff to the tip. Hated doing it - felt it was a waste since most went into landfill but I was paying to store bits of wood and work surface left over from our kitchen. Stupid.

House not great again - depression gets me sometimes and I feel so temporary here. It is good to hear others' stories though.

Babieseverywhere · 14/02/2015 22:43

I have cleared a few small boxes in the girls room. I am going to re label and reuse for toys. Hopefully tomorrow :)

Babieseverywhere · 15/02/2015 15:57

I finally got started decluttering again. ..just been doing basic cleaning and laundry recently. Smile

I cleared all the floor in the kids room....under everything except the very back under the wardrobe...need a longer stick.

I collected everything. Chucked everything I could and sorted the rest into sections.

I have some baby stuff and soft toy stuff too sort later but they are tidy in tubs for now.

Everything we are keeping is in boxes with lids and both are labelled.

Hopefully that will help the children tidy away.

Tired now....just having a brew then tea and the ironing to do later :)

Solo · 16/02/2015 18:06

I have done very little. I've had to put my bed delivery off again and they have said they will have to return it to the supplier and then I'll have to reorganise from there. I really hope I wont be penalised for that! so much gone wrong with my house.

Babieseverywhere · 18/02/2015 08:06

Oh no...why are you cancelling bed ?
