The Hoarders Anonymous Thread. Sorting It Out.

There was a thread that I was involved in some time ago which was started by someone trying to understand why her Dh kept so much 'stuff' and couldn't throw anything away.

The thread quickly turned into a support thread for many MN hoarders and there was a large support network that evolved from that thread.

Eventually, the thread died and with it, certainly my 'support and encouragement mates' circle...

From other threads where lovely Mumsnetters have supported and given rl help, there have come other hoarders, untidy people and those who are just plain stuck in a rut admitting they have a problem. People like me that have become emotionally attached to stuff and it has taken over their homes and their lives. People that cannot cope after loss of different types (parent, relationship, job etc) and it just turns into one big nightmare ~ it certainly did for me following my relationship breakdown, my Dad dying and another nine people in my life passing away inside 11 months.
Personally, I feel that being unable to let anyone in through my front door means that no one can hurt me; I've pulled up the drawbridge, so no one can get to me and shoot me again.

I've always been a bit of a collector of things. I'm a make do and mend type and I can make something out of nothing. Trouble is that once I started to lose important things (people mainly) from my life, I felt unable to let anything made of something go...what if I could never get or have another?! that'd be terrible right?

So! that is a part of my story and here is a thread of support and encouragement (I hope) for others feeling overwhelmed by their hoarding, clutter and stuff. I am hoping that I can get my life sorted out and that there are others that will come along on the journey and perhaps also sort out their homes and lives.

I want to raise my drawbridge and invite friends in. Anyone else? :)

I am plodding on with the basics but no nearer in clearing our room and I really wanted to break the back of that before Christmas.

Off to do some ironing if DD3 will let me.

TheFirstSolo · 23/12/2014 11:38

Everything is wrapped for Christmas! got to go food shopping for Mum in a bit. Also got to collect Dd's new to her bike as I forgot yesterday.

Don't think I'll be doing anything substantial in my house until after Christmas now.

Babieseverywhere · 24/12/2014 08:06

Been busy today. A wash load done and hung up. Sorting through some stuff and a box of things boxed up.

I a going to win.

An embarrassing moment today. Friend picked up Dd to play with his Dc's. He says his Dd1 needs to use the toilet. I had to day "I can't let you in" Blush. This cannot happen again.

I have found the floor if my house in the downstairs and bathroom. Did half a week's shopping and had a funny turn at the shop !

But home now, having lunch and about to settle DD3 down for a nap and have an hour to it on before school pick up!

Solo · 05/01/2015 14:22

Oooh! a funny turn?! are you ok?

Well done on the floor finding! :)

My Dd is back to school tomorrow, so I will attempt to get going after school run :)

Basic house cleaning.
Kitchen...twice
Spag bol cooking in slow cooker for tea.
Ginger cake cooking on bread machine for tea.

Just having a herbal tea before getting DD3 up from her nap and going to collect the children from school :)

Next week I am going to break the back of the last very cluttered room...aka our bedroom (Then I can start on hidden clutter.... drawers and cupboard)

Wish me luck :)

Ooh! Babies you put me to shame!

Today, I tidied part of my kitchen, cleared and cleaned the kitchen window sill, took all the utensil pots down from it, emptied, cleaned them and the contents and put back...looks so much better :) washed up, did a dishwasher load and unpacked it when finished, cleaned cooker top (long over due again ). Put a wash load in, took out and hung to dry.
Doesn't look like I touched it! :(

Got rid of the booster seat.

I have been at softplay most of the day....plus food shopping !

Just put food away and have ten minutes before I set off on afternoon school run.
