The Hoarders Anonymous Thread. Sorting It Out.

There was a thread that I was involved in some time ago which was started by someone trying to understand why her Dh kept so much 'stuff' and couldn't throw anything away.

The thread quickly turned into a support thread for many MN hoarders and there was a large support network that evolved from that thread.

Eventually, the thread died and with it, certainly my 'support and encouragement mates' circle...

From other threads where lovely Mumsnetters have supported and given rl help, there have come other hoarders, untidy people and those who are just plain stuck in a rut admitting they have a problem. People like me that have become emotionally attached to stuff and it has taken over their homes and their lives. People that cannot cope after loss of different types (parent, relationship, job etc) and it just turns into one big nightmare ~ it certainly did for me following my relationship breakdown, my Dad dying and another nine people in my life passing away inside 11 months.
Personally, I feel that being unable to let anyone in through my front door means that no one can hurt me; I've pulled up the drawbridge, so no one can get to me and shoot me again.

I've always been a bit of a collector of things. I'm a make do and mend type and I can make something out of nothing. Trouble is that once I started to lose important things (people mainly) from my life, I felt unable to let anything made of something go...what if I could never get or have another?! that'd be terrible right?

So! that is a part of my story and here is a thread of support and encouragement (I hope) for others feeling overwhelmed by their hoarding, clutter and stuff. I am hoping that I can get my life sorted out and that there are others that will come along on the journey and perhaps also sort out their homes and lives.

I want to raise my drawbridge and invite friends in. Anyone else? :)

Oh Solo, I hope they turned up! We have a leak in the upstairs bathroom, which means I need to tidy the bathroom and clean handprints of the wall before landlord calls

ChippingInAutumnLover · 13/11/2014 20:07

Solo did they turn up??

Cikecaka At least you have a landlord and don't have to worry about it :) When is s/he coming?

cikecaka · 13/11/2014 20:40

Don't know, letting agent will let me know tomorrow! Hate having to get them involved

ChippingInAutumnLover · 13/11/2014 21:00

Hate the agency or hate having a landlord?

cikecaka · 13/11/2014 21:12

Hate having to get them to come round, rather pay my rent and forget them til the next time I have to pay it!

ChippingInAutumnLover · 13/11/2014 21:19

I can understand that. It's a hassle and an intrusion.

How was the rest of your day?

Solo · 14/11/2014 01:07

Ugh! I hate that sort of intrusion cike

No, the three different takers did not come! only one had a reason.

Anyway. More books boxed.

Tons more to do. Need more boxes!

ChippingInAutumnLover · 14/11/2014 02:03

What are you going to do with the books when you move back in? It would appear you have rehomed all of the bookcases Grin

It's so rude to just not turn up!

Solo · 14/11/2014 10:29

Grin I've got bookcases! and I have a real oak one coming to replace the pretend wood one I've got stuck in my porch!! I will have some shelves in my bedroom for a few special much loved books and Dd will have her books in her space when it's done. I may get some more shelves to put more on should I need them Blush.

Did I mention I love books and am just ordering more?!

OP posts:
ChippingInAutumnLover · 14/11/2014 10:47

No more books!!!!

You need to get rid of stuff first, get the rewiring done, settle back in. Keep de cluttering.

You is norty!!

Solo · 14/11/2014 11:20

Grin I know! but it's Christmas presents and cheap birthday presents!

I'm just waiting for someone to turn up and collect a plant stand.
Clearing up in the kitchen; dishwasher on.
Sorted through one of four of Dd's drawers, got a few bits out to go.

OP posts:
cikecaka · 14/11/2014 11:30

Going to clean kitchen!
Load Dishwasher
Clean counters clear table
Brush floor

Solo · 14/11/2014 12:56

Have sorted Dd's clothing drawers and got rid of a fair bit. Going to bag up the summer uniform and clothing and clothes too big and shed it!

Plant stand gone! yippee!!
Dishwasher done, washing machine about to go on.

Think I'm going to put my nets back up in my bedroom.

Going to look at what needs doing immediately and do it!!

OP posts:
ChippingInAutumnLover · 14/11/2014 16:41

That's OK then Solo, you aren't norty - you is good! :)

You've both had good days! That's lots of sorting Solo, kids clothes are a bit of a challenge to sort!

I bet you have the fire on Cike Envy

Solo · 15/11/2014 02:01

Grin I'm a good girl me!

Yep! very pleased with myself, but much much more to do which won't be touched until Tuesday I expect.

Put one of the bedroom nets back up as I can't find the second curtain wire!! Hmm

Am I a bad person for offering different people the items that everyone keeps letting me down with collection? I'm now on the 4th person for the bookcase and the second person for something else...grrr! very annoying!!
Hopefully three more things will be gone before lunch time tomorrow!

OP posts:
ChippingInAutumnLover · 15/11/2014 09:32

Oh how annoying about the wire!!

What are you doing for the next 3 days? .

ChippingInAutumnLover · 15/11/2014 09:33

fuzzy hope you are ok and the visit hasn't been too traumatic :( x

Babieseverywhere · 15/11/2014 12:26

It is my birthday weekend and I have not slept properly for days...fell asleep sat upright on the sofa yesterday !

DS isn't sleeping and dropped his tablet down the toilet in the early hours this morning.

DD1 felt ill and threw up once in toilet.

DD3 threw up several times all over me and hasn't sleep in three nights.

DD2 has been waking up more due to everyone else and she of course wants more cuddles and to sleep with us as well.

Lastly DH bless him wanted to get me a present this year, something I have wanted for years. But the mot on the car took the money. He thought we could use the doubled up Tesco vouchers instead, so we went there and the present was excluded from their offer, lol. We had a lovely lunch out instead.

So no housework done recently...dreading awaiting DS Ed Psyc visit at school on Wednesday.

Babieseverywhere · 15/11/2014 12:27

Sounds like things are going well Solo

ChippingInAutumnLover · 15/11/2014 13:12

Babies

Oh no - what a nightmare!! Poor you :( How are they all feeling today? Book yourself a bath and an early night! Leave DH in charge of the brood.

What sort of tablet is it?

Try totally covering it in rice - as in, you can't see it - and putting it somewhere warm and dry for several days, don't turn it on until you have done this.

You have to tell me what the present was - I can't stand not knowing these thing Grin PM if you don't want to say on here! Tell him he can buy you it late - ie whenever you have the money & before it gets spent on something boring!!

Babieseverywhere · 15/11/2014 14:23

I couldn't leave DH with ill children....we pull together when there is illness in the house. We have having a lazy screen/tv day. DD1 feels ok, DD2 and DS still feel sick . DD3 doesn't talk but I think she feels unwell still.

Present wise, we have a tight budget so don't normal buy for each other but DH saved his overtime last year and for my big birthday last year, got me a tablet ! (To replace my 10 year old pc, so I could keep mumsnetting)

Of course I was delighted (still am) and that is why I don't expect something this year as well.

My lovely DH knows how much I love reading and has mended my 8 year old Kindle and its case several times, including taking it to pieces and replacing the broken outer bit with broken ones off eBay.

So he had planned to get me a Kindle Paperwhite with built in background light ! He is so thoughtful, to be honest he want to try and get it next month but I don't, we struggle to get christmas sorted and I would feel too guilty to be spending so much on an expensive unecessary item, at that time of year.

But I love the idea and do hope we will get one next year and that my loyal original Kindle keeps on going in the meantime. My tablet and Kindle really are my lifelines (alongside family and all things crafty) :)

Babieseverywhere · 15/11/2014 14:25

Ps. DS's tablet was protected by it's case and seems to be fine...lucky escape !

Babieseverywhere · 15/11/2014 14:31

But DS case is still drying out. DH has popped out to get pizza for tea and some wine and we are going to watch a film together while having a glass...heaven :) Everything crossed there is no more sickness later.

ChippingInAutumnLover · 15/11/2014 15:21

You all sound so lovely :) DH definitely sounds like a keeper x

I hope the kids all start to feel better soon, it's miserable when they feel sick :(

I would still put DS's tablet in the airing cupboard or near a radiator (but not too near!!) overnight, try to make sure you dry any little bits of water out and if it isn't working tomorrow, try the rice. But hopefully it's OK!!

I was shocked when you said your 8 year old kindle! I can't believe they've been out that long, it seems like only a couple of years!!

Fingers crossed you can get the kids all in bed and they feel OK, so you can enjoy and evening with DH
x

Babieseverywhere · 15/11/2014 16:24

Aww thanks.

I have just Googled and it looks like I was wrong, though Kindles have been around 8 years, mine is either 5.5 or 6 yo :)
