The Hoarders Anonymous Thread. Sorting It Out.

Solo · 28/12/2013 17:54

There was a thread that I was involved in some time ago which was started by someone trying to understand why her Dh kept so much 'stuff' and couldn't throw anything away.

The thread quickly turned into a support thread for many MN hoarders and there was a large support network that evolved from that thread.

Eventually, the thread died and with it, certainly my 'support and encouragement mates' circle...

From other threads where lovely Mumsnetters have supported and given rl help, there have come other hoarders, untidy people and those who are just plain stuck in a rut admitting they have a problem. People like me that have become emotionally attached to stuff and it has taken over their homes and their lives. People that cannot cope after loss of different types (parent, relationship, job etc) and it just turns into one big nightmare ~ it certainly did for me following my relationship breakdown, my Dad dying and another nine people in my life passing away inside 11 months.
Personally, I feel that being unable to let anyone in through my front door means that no one can hurt me; I've pulled up the drawbridge, so no one can get to me and shoot me again.

I've always been a bit of a collector of things. I'm a make do and mend type and I can make something out of nothing. Trouble is that once I started to lose important things (people mainly) from my life, I felt unable to let anything made of something go...what if I could never get or have another?! that'd be terrible right?

So! that is a part of my story and here is a thread of support and encouragement (I hope) for others feeling overwhelmed by their hoarding, clutter and stuff. I am hoping that I can get my life sorted out and that there are others that will come along on the journey and perhaps also sort out their homes and lives.

I want to raise my drawbridge and invite friends in. Anyone else? :)

I still can't believe it's been either 6 or 8 years. Where does the time go??

Before we know it, your name will be TeensEverywhere!!

Babieseverywhere · 15/11/2014 16:57

I did reserve toddlerseverywhere and childreneverywhere but I like my name and a 2yo is still a baby, right !

ChippingInAutumnLover · 15/11/2014 17:18

Reserve TeensEverywhere too!! It'll be here before you know it Grin

Hmm - I'll let you off calling the 2yo a baby for a smidge longer, but only because you like your name Grin Normally I'm quite stroppy about toddlers being called babies Grin

Babieseverywhere · 15/11/2014 18:04

Yikes this thread has moved on a lot! Didn't come back for a while as I've not been doing so well.

Started sertraline yesterday, didn't want to but GP insisted I try it as it's often helpful for people with OCD.

Must go and hang out laundry now. Getting a tumble dryer soon though, thanks to some money from my parents, which is ridiculously exciting! It will make a huge difference.

Will catch up properly later. Thanks

ChippingInAutumnLover · 17/11/2014 13:01

Fuzzy that's when you need to be here lovely - we'll support you, not tell you off you silly nana! x

How does your OCD manifest itself? (Just say if you'd rather not talk about it x)

Is sertraline one of the ones that makes you feel worse before you feel better or is it not too bad?

When should the dryer arrive? It sounds amazing (from your other thread) I wonder if it will do the ironing as well?

Cike Good list...still wish we had a real fire, despite the additional work. We had an open one in our last house.

Solo Glad you had a good school reunion and got rid of the big stuff Grin

My DP's came around and fitted a shelf in my kitchen...it hold all my barely used electric stuff (slow cooker, toaster, etc) Kitchen looks loads clearer and I cleared away everything from the kitchen windowsill..which is lovely.

However to counteract the kitchen...the children spilt a bowl if cereal with milk all over the ball pit....arghh. Tomorrow's job scrubbing out pit and washing all balls.

Babieseverywhere · 17/11/2014 16:47

chipping Looks like you got loads done today. Smile

Fuzzy I don't know anything about ocd but I'm sure your GP wouldn't prescribe anything if it was not needed. Hope it helps.

ChippingInAutumnLover · 18/11/2014 00:09

Babies PMSL - that was my plan for Cike not for me Grin

I got feck all done today Blush and I don't have a fire Envy

OH, it's not a good time of the year for washing all the balls and the ball pit - bugger. I'd do it in the bath!

Great about the shelf!

How are all the kids doing now?

Solo · 18/11/2014 00:42

No idea Chip but glad that something is occurring.

Got rid of a bag of charity shop stuff today and collected some apple logs.

Finally, I was able to actually get to the far cupboard in the dining room. They are Pax from Ikea and hold lots of stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else. The only problem is that they are, strictly speaking, wardrobes and the shelves are straining under the weight, so I have to move things around a lot. I did throw out some stuff today though and made up a bag of baby dishes, plates and cups for my expectant friend. I've also made a plan to take away some of the strain.

Solo Flowers You really are motoring through this!! :)

Apple logs? Is that wood from an apple tree for the fire or something entirely different?

How bad is it behind the couch? Grin

Solo · 18/11/2014 21:49

Yes, apple logs for the burner when I actually get one!

Today my plans didn't go according to plan!

My shower pull cord stopped working a couple of weeks ago, so today, I bought a new unit and replaced it. Trouble was, it took a long time as it's a fiddly job in a small space and I was still struggling when Ds got home. Miraculously, he actually helped me get it done! the light was fading to gone and of course, all the electrics were switched off, so no light to work by, so it was extra tough by phone light! I also broke the toilet lid hinges by standing on it so had to replace it with the new white one I bought a few weeks ago for when I get the cabinets changed over. Keep asking Ds to help me to build those up, but he won't and it's really a two person job.

Anyway, bath clean, tiles wiped over where the soap scum stains them and the grout, vacuumed behind the loo which was disgustingly dusty Blush
and dishwasher on.

Tomorrow I'm going to work on the lounge again and try to get that clear. If I can get that done and then the hall/stairs, I can get the wood burner men in to tell me what's what and when!!!

OP posts:
Babieseverywhere · 18/11/2014 22:08

Kids no longer ill but not getting much sleep as DS is having loads of nightmares and keeps waking other people up

On the bright side, no car (in garage) and in order to keepmyself awake and not stressing too much...I have cleared out a corner inmy living room, movedthe keep section into our room and now have a wardrobe to get rid off.
