The Hoarders Anonymous Thread. Sorting It Out.

Solo · 28/12/2013 17:54

There was a thread that I was involved in some time ago which was started by someone trying to understand why her Dh kept so much 'stuff' and couldn't throw anything away.

The thread quickly turned into a support thread for many MN hoarders and there was a large support network that evolved from that thread.

Eventually, the thread died and with it, certainly my 'support and encouragement mates' circle...

From other threads where lovely Mumsnetters have supported and given rl help, there have come other hoarders, untidy people and those who are just plain stuck in a rut admitting they have a problem. People like me that have become emotionally attached to stuff and it has taken over their homes and their lives. People that cannot cope after loss of different types (parent, relationship, job etc) and it just turns into one big nightmare ~ it certainly did for me following my relationship breakdown, my Dad dying and another nine people in my life passing away inside 11 months.
Personally, I feel that being unable to let anyone in through my front door means that no one can hurt me; I've pulled up the drawbridge, so no one can get to me and shoot me again.

I've always been a bit of a collector of things. I'm a make do and mend type and I can make something out of nothing. Trouble is that once I started to lose important things (people mainly) from my life, I felt unable to let anything made of something go...what if I could never get or have another?! that'd be terrible right?

So! that is a part of my story and here is a thread of support and encouragement (I hope) for others feeling overwhelmed by their hoarding, clutter and stuff. I am hoping that I can get my life sorted out and that there are others that will come along on the journey and perhaps also sort out their homes and lives.

I want to raise my drawbridge and invite friends in. Anyone else? :)

Oooopps though, just realised that means that every time I shorten your name I'm leaving two of your kids out Shock I'll have to alternate from now on!!

cikecaka · 07/11/2014 23:36

No prob, 2 start with c and 2 with k so it doesn't really matter!!

Solo · 08/11/2014 02:11

For now, the stockings and tights can stay where they are; I have bigger fish to fry!!

Looks like at least two items are going via Freecycle! exciting!!

Well, that a great start to the day!! :)

I have hung one load up, next load is in. That's all I'll have room to dry today, it's going to pour down before long, the clouds are black, so it's all having to be dried inside (no dryer, hate them).

ChippingInAutumnLover · 08/11/2014 10:51

Sounds like a good plan for the day, especially lighting the fire :)

'Put clothes away' not done? Are there too many clothes in the cupboards/drawers making it difficult? Impressed at your ticks though!

cikecaka · 08/11/2014 13:40

Lol chipping, I cleared the clothes horse, put them on the couch, then went and cleared and lit the fire so my hands were filthy, washed them in the kitchen and went upstairs without the clothes while the momentum was good!

Grin. See, I notice these things!! and that they've still not been put away

You've done lots today :)

What's DD3 doing in her concert? How old is she?

I'm about to go out, try to find some coffee pads for the machine, grab coffee at Costa and then give blood. I need to drink a lot of water before then so the can find my veins!

Solo · 08/11/2014 14:05

Yes! I have one item going today and one tomorrow! one big, one small. Still have three bags of clothing to go to C4C and I gave away a full set of cot bedding yesterday, a (good) toy too, so some stuff gone! more to go.

cikecaka you are flying!!

So are you Solo. I'm well impressed! You are letting so much go, I hope you can really start to see the benefits of it soon!

Have you tackled the flowers and what was it, wedding dresses? etc in the loft yet?

How long have you got before the retiring starts?

Solo · 08/11/2014 14:17

The original wedding flowers were torn apart a few years ago! The original dress is still in the loft; it causes no trouble. The other one is in a suitcase ~ again, no trouble.

Retiring? ah!! rewiring! Grin not booked yet, but want it done soon. Really want the wood burner doing too!!

Solo · 08/11/2014 14:19

By the way! I have thrown out shoes!! and I have to try to sell Dd's Birkenstocks too; not giving those away!!

ZingOfSeven · 08/11/2014 14:20

have you come across the Marie Kondo book and it's tidying wisdom yet?

really useful

Solo · 08/11/2014 14:20

Don't panic fuzz it'll be fine. You have done so much already :)

OP posts:
Solo · 08/11/2014 14:21

Don't think so Zing but might have a look. Thanks!

OP posts:
Solo · 08/11/2014 14:25

I've just looked on Amazon. She says "The key to successful tidying is to tackle your home in the correct order, to keep only the things you really love and to do it all at once – and quickly. After that for the rest of your life you only need to choose what to keep and what to discard."

The problem there for a lot of us is the quickly bit. Personally, I'm an emotional hoarder, so quickly isn't possibly. I've been doing this for years already :(
