The Hoarders Anonymous Thread. Sorting It Out.

Solo · 28/12/2013 17:54

There was a thread that I was involved in some time ago which was started by someone trying to understand why her Dh kept so much 'stuff' and couldn't throw anything away.

The thread quickly turned into a support thread for many MN hoarders and there was a large support network that evolved from that thread.

Eventually, the thread died and with it, certainly my 'support and encouragement mates' circle...

From other threads where lovely Mumsnetters have supported and given rl help, there have come other hoarders, untidy people and those who are just plain stuck in a rut admitting they have a problem. People like me that have become emotionally attached to stuff and it has taken over their homes and their lives. People that cannot cope after loss of different types (parent, relationship, job etc) and it just turns into one big nightmare ~ it certainly did for me following my relationship breakdown, my Dad dying and another nine people in my life passing away inside 11 months.
Personally, I feel that being unable to let anyone in through my front door means that no one can hurt me; I've pulled up the drawbridge, so no one can get to me and shoot me again.

I've always been a bit of a collector of things. I'm a make do and mend type and I can make something out of nothing. Trouble is that once I started to lose important things (people mainly) from my life, I felt unable to let anything made of something go...what if I could never get or have another?! that'd be terrible right?

So! that is a part of my story and here is a thread of support and encouragement (I hope) for others feeling overwhelmed by their hoarding, clutter and stuff. I am hoping that I can get my life sorted out and that there are others that will come along on the journey and perhaps also sort out their homes and lives.

I want to raise my drawbridge and invite friends in. Anyone else? :)

Solo

yeah, forget about quickly. like every advice book you have to take it with a pinch of salt.

but her KonMari method and philosophy of only keeping things that bring you joy (besides the practical stuff) is worth exploring.

the book is called "The life-changing magic of tidying"

(thread's already going)

if you feel stuck one day have a read!
good luck all of you, tidy on!Smile

Solo · 08/11/2014 15:33

I have just ordered 2 copies from Amazon! one for my friend who is very much like me! so thank you Zing! :)

I'm glad! I was worried you might feel I'm trodding on your thread solo!

I'm taking a break from sorting and will start the new year guns ablazing, but in the meantime I keep getting rid of stuff in the KonMari spirit and it's just so liberating!Smile

Solo · 08/11/2014 16:24

No, not at all! :) so you are a bit cluttered too? do join in! I'm hoping to get much more done before Christmas as I want a wood burner installed and my house rewired! now you might think that's very ambitious, and what on earth am I doing on MN etc...well you might if you saw the state of the house in question Blush, but I am doing ok, but have more to do. I want Christmas at home and I want to be in a reasonable position to allow me to throw open my doors!!

a bit cluttered?
a bit?? Grin

let me introduce myself to you solo
we have 7 children aged 13y to 4m. we moved in May
there are so many clothes and toys and komono (polite Japanese expression for "random crap") we are drowning!

it's not for lack of trying to be organised, but rather the usual stuff of no time, energy, motivation.
And the kids are just so messy and lazy! we constantly have to fight with them to help out. I'm exhausted just writing about it..

Grin

I have a few obstacles in the way atm and December is nuts , so I'm starting properly in January. I'll try and report back!Wink

ChippingInAutumnLover · 08/11/2014 17:27

Zing's house is cluttered!!! with children Grin

We had discussed the book, I think Solo napped through that part of the thread Grin

Dd3 is 7, she sings in a children's choir, (only joined her cause she is First Holy Communion this yr and it makes us go to mass with her, ) ! Her choir teacher has organised a fund raising concert for a children's charity! Light operatic with loads of singers, but very cleverly put in the children's choir so all the parents would have to pay the 20€ to see their little darlings!

Fecking ipad.

Just typed a reply to you, hit post, hit threads I'm on...it goes to TIO and just skips posting. Grrr. The laptop just does it all in order.

Winning the voucher makes up for paying!!

Is it chilly there today then? It's sunny and very mild here, I'm just about to venture out and have coffee in the sunshine somewhere, top up the vit D :)

cikecaka · 09/11/2014 13:19

It's not a bad day at all! Not too cold! Have a feeling I could be asleep in front of this fire so I'm going to move and clear the hall before I fall asleep

Solo · 09/11/2014 13:24

Yes, I'm pleased it's gone!

All washing up to date except the bedding which will have to wait a few days.

Dishwasher ready to run when home tonight.

Weather lovely here too.

cikecaka · 09/11/2014 14:51

Oh Solo I wish I could sew, we picked out her dress 2 weeks ago! Our date is 23rd May!

ChippingInAutumnLover · 09/11/2014 16:48

Solo what is the Giant Arses problem now?

caka. If I had an open fire I'd become a total recluse!! Grin

I forced myself out of the house and for a walk around the arboretum, I'm sure it's done me some good to get some fresh air and exercise, but my chest is wheezy now. Unfortunately, despite their Facebook saying otherwise, the trees have lost all their leaves so it wasn't all colourful, which was why I went! :( Oh well, next year! I've clearly reached middle age though, I've joined the National Trust!

More laundry? Perhaps you need to introduce naked weekends Grin... But not to Mass. Clearly.

cikecaka · 10/11/2014 11:31

I swamped by clothes! Cleaning my room brought me another basket of washing!

ChippingInAutumnLover · 10/11/2014 11:43

Oh well, at least you're making progress and it's not just the weekly washing!

Babieseverywhere · 10/11/2014 16:54

I am struggling today... not finished daily chores. Pulled out loads of craft stuff to sort and now I am drowning in it.

Children tired from school and two youngest are crying even whilst I cuddle them.

DH just rang to tell me he won't be home till late...so all homework, tea and bedtime on my own too :(

I would cry if I had the energy, plus school have thrown a non uniform day with specific colours tomorrow so I have to sort though clothes and get the ironing board out again too.

It is too cold and I am too tired. But as the only grown up in the house, I better get moving.

Babieseverywhere · 10/11/2014 18:42

Right, since last post I have walked all four children to local shop for bread and crisps.

All the kids got in Pj's and hoovered the living room. Whilst I made tea and loaded/unloaded dishwasher and washing machine.

Also found enough clean dry clothes which match school colours and only one t-shirt needs ironing!

Just eating tea....next jobs ironing t-shirt, getting kids breakfast box and school bags packed, then bedtime routine.

Finally I aim to spend 30 minutes sorting and/or repacking craft boxes to be thrown back in cupboard I dragged them out of this morning !

I have a mini Dr Pepper bottle waiting for my treat :)

ChippingInAutumnLover · 10/11/2014 20:19

Urgh, what a day, poor you :(

I hope you had crisp sandwiches for tea!!

All kids in bed now??

Craft stuff back in the cupboard?

Double Dr Peppers for you!!

Babieseverywhere · 10/11/2014 21:00

Just sat down :)

Yes, craft stuff repacked in cupboard minus a bin bag full of stuff to be thrown.

Ironing done, children settled after egg sandwiches and crisps :)

Feeling better Grin
