Flying into September - a new term for the Fledglings

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 30/08/2013 22:14

Welcome to the September Fledgling Flylady Thread.

This thread is for people with CHAOS (can't have anyone over syndrome). We follow Flylady, the website with a mission!

All are welcome on this thread, experienced flyers and newcomers alike.

We try to follow the commandments of Flylady as we run our homes, loosely anyway. In between there's lots of chat and support as we go through our daily lives. We have coffee, cake, and a naughty corner for those who want to chat but CBA with their house some days. However you follow it, this thread is designed to make your life a little easier and more fun.

For those who are new to the system (and those needing a refresher), there are several aspects to the system:

  1. Babysteps. These build a routine. Some are really useful, some are downright odd and some are, quite frankly, there to be ignored. They build a good foundation though.
  1. Decluttering. Flylade is evangelical about clutter. In order to feel good about our homes we need to ditch the clutter. Flylady divides the home into zones, week by week and repeating monthly. As well as babysteps, we have to declutter in the relevant zone. Once that is achieved we move on to...
  1. Missions. Also in the current zone, these are targetted tasks to tackle one particular aspect. One a day, they vary month to month.
  1. Deep Cleaning. Once we have completely decluttered (some of us seem to be stuck permanently on that stage) there are deep cleaning lists for each zone. Achieve that and your house will be spotless!

One last thing - the Flylady website encourages us to subscribe to her emails - one word - DON"T! You will be overwhelmed by them. Instead come to this thread every morning and the relevant links for the day will be there waiting for you except when the thread leader has been on the Wine

A big thank you to Bitchy for last month, and also for doing this Sunday's links as I am off camping.

Bitchy - can I have a pm too? I'm intrigued.

Swan - am cooking dinner late and it's all your fault Wink. I decided to follow your lead and allow myself an afternoon nap. I fell asleep at 4.30 and woke up two hours' later Blush.

My 'to dos' are now my 'ta das'.

BitchytheGreat · 11/09/2013 19:56

toffee you have mail.

elliepac · 11/09/2013 19:57

so now I have to eat my words where DH is concerned. After declaring himself better yesterday today he has cleaned, and I mean proper cleaned the entire downstairs, mopped, pulled out furniture, cleared cupboards and everythingShock . And he tidied thegardenShock Shock . BastardWink Grin

Been super busy trying to remember how to teach. Little flying on my behalf.

Well, quite a productive day here, the house doesn't look much better, but there is a lot more space in various place now.

Took a car load of stuff to the charity shop, binned a large binbag full of the DCs makes from school over the last couple of years . I have taken photos of them all though and kept a couple of the best bits. Have also put out a binbag full of stuff for the tip, plus a big plastic cooker from DD's playhouse in the garden.

So, there's space in the loft, space in the playhouse, also space in a couple of kitchen cupboards as I cleared some of DDs craft stuff into plastic boxes elsewhere. I have boxed up DD's Playmobil for the loft, sadly it never gets played with. Also put a few things on Freecycle. So,lots of decluttering.

Cleaning wise, changed our bed and washed sheets, also gave the kitchen floor a really good going over (the edges/corners were a bit grim, the mop doesn't really get in there). Also managed a quick swim and a PTA meeting, then this evening DD had Brownies. So, a busy day and I'm tired.

Quiet on here today, hope everyone is just too busy Flying! Back in a minute with links.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 11/09/2013 21:48

Thursday's Links

Babystep 12 = delete all your Flylady emails. If you've got any.

Mission Wipe down those counter tops.

Daily Focus Errand Day

Habit of the Month - not sure if I've posted this before, but for September our habit of the month is our bedtime routine.

OP posts:
BlueEyeshadow · 11/09/2013 22:06

Evening all.

Have been busy with work-related stuff all day, but have managed the mission again Shock - kitchen ones seem doable somehow. It also helps having them summarise (thanks WhoKnows ) - too lazy to click on a link. Blush

Sounds like a good declutter, WhoKnows. Intending to do a charity shop dump tomorrow myself.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 11/09/2013 22:32

I'm the same Blue sometimes when it's not me doing the links I go weeks without clicking on any Blush.

ToffeeWhirl · 11/09/2013 23:43

Am very envious of all your decluttering, WhoKnows. Well done.

Wide awake thanks to late afternoon nap, so am tackling paperwork. That'll soon send me to sleep...

BitchytheGreat · 12/09/2013 00:42

even when i post the links I rarely look at them Blush

And fuck to habit of the month. Its a whole month of babystep 17 :( I suck at that babystep. and am slightly disturbed that i don't need to look that up to get that right HmmSad

elliepac · 12/09/2013 06:39

Another link ignorer here. I figure I've been here long enough to know what I should be doing, just not very good at actually doing itGrin.

Morning all, have just about recovered from DH's activity yesterday although did have a small heart attack this morning when i got up and realised he had tidied up evening detritus before he came to bed. ShockShock

Another busy day here although thankfully no after school clubs etc today. And it's Friday tomorrow and I am getting paid to go to Flamingoland for the day. WoohooSmile.

Have a good day everyone!

JemimaMuddledUp · 12/09/2013 08:05

Counter wiping looks do-able. I have done all the other missions this week so far, I may as well go for the full gold star!

To Do
Put a wash on on
Tumble dry last night's wash and this morning's wash (yes, still raining)
Clean bathroom and toilets
Wash dishes
Sweep kitchen floor
Clean kitchen surfaces
Ironing
Sort out football kit for DS1 for tonight and hockey kits for all 3 DC for tomorrow.

Most of this will have to wait until I come home from work though.

PositiveAttitude · 12/09/2013 08:46

Another link ignorer here. Blush It's a bit like dieting isn't it...I know what I SHOULD do, but doing it is the hard bit!

Well, I am very quite pleased with myself in the flying realm. The only room in the house that is now not acceptable is DD2s bedroom....her fault, but I will need to get in there and clear it out as she has now returned to London until Christmas. Every other room is decluttered, clean and tidy and I now just need to keep it like it. The queen could visit today and I would not flap at all!! It has taken me years of being here to get this done and I think it now has more to do with the fact that DH is not around and I have been manically cleaning to keep myself busy. I do have one "dump" area which I am determined to clear of rubbish over the next week. I am sadly excited about clearing that last area!! What has happened to me!! This system does work!!!! and I still ignore the more "silly" steps
Going from having a house full of 5 DC and always having their friends here etc to now having just me and DS has made a huge difference.

Sorry, that is not a boast, please take it as an encouragement that it can be done......and I will probably be here next month again with a tip of a house!!!

List for today:

Sweep kitchen floor - done
Swish and swipe
Mop kitchen floor
work meeting which I hope does not take too long
bit of shopping
daily mum and dad duty
visitors here
try to chip away at "dump area"
Washing x 2
Swim session as a treat tonight.....if I am not asleep as it is not til 9pm! Hmm

One question - I am hoping to get a new carpet in my bedroom, but how does that work when I have huge wardrobes etc in there that I cannot move out?

Have a good day everyone.

ToffeeWhirl · 12/09/2013 09:27

PA - well done on your tidy house Grin. It must be wonderful to see the result of all your work (and not have various DC and DH around to mess it up again). It's good to know that the Flylady system works eventually!

Re: carpet - how lovely to be getting a new carpet! The carpet fitters will just fit the carpet around the wardrobes if they are fitted wardrobes.

DS2 has a streaming cold and is off school again. At least I now know that it wasn't just schoolitis or not wanting to go swimming when he said he felt ill yesterday. We wouldn't let him have his Nintendo DS until the end of the school day yesterday and he ended up reading eight books instead! Am doing the same ban today and he is currently building a shopping centre with Lego. He is completely addicted to a DS game called 'Animal Crossing' at the moment, so it's good to get him off it. I let him buy it with some holiday money at the end of the summer holidays and am regretting it now.

Quiet day at home today, so am planning on doing some domestic stuff after I've done some home ed with DS1. We are having to really cut back on spending at the moment - partly prompted by the water board fitting a water metre and knowing our water bills are now going to go up Sad - so I went through all our income and outgoings yesterday and trawled through MN threads looking for thrifty advice. Planning to go through our cupboards today and start using up what we already have before buying more. Am sure we could cut back on food spending.

DS1 will have to wait awhile before he gets another restaurant visit, unfortunately.

BitchytheGreat · 12/09/2013 10:19

Alternatively you enlist ds and some of his friends to move the wardrobes for you and you supply them with goodies to eat? WinkGrin

wendyhappysmile · 12/09/2013 14:15

Hi all
Can't believe it is Thursday already. Spent two nights up til midnight marking books and very little Flying other than the basic chores and cooking Hmm. So hard to be motivated when you are shattered! Did go to yoga class though on Monday - first time in 3 years. Really enjoyed it. Also had Book Club on Tuesday so have had a busy week really.
Bitchy you are on a mission!

BitchytheGreat · 12/09/2013 14:22

I have just spent an hour trying to deal with dm's computer/user issues.

Wendy I get the house to my house for a few days, i'd like it tidy enough to enjoy. Grin

Swanhilda · 12/09/2013 15:05

it's very busy here...[sigh] However, I gave myself a treat and went to WHSMith and bought loads of information books for the children and new cookbook Blush for me.

so far
taken ds2 to school by car and back (very bad traffic again)
taken ds1 to OT assessment by bus - they will liaise with school now I hope. No actual sessions till after Xmas but that suits us, as ds1 is very reluctant to miss school at moment Shock He was gutted to miss PE this morning..
went to WHSSmith on way home
sorted childrens' schooly possessions into three clearly marked boxes for kitchen worktop (Dd lost her diary this morning Sad cue major panic - it was under something and I found it after she left)
More panic as apparently dd rang up to say her purse had been stolen, no lunchcard, travelcard or money to pay for anything in lieu. School lent her some money.
Washed up
Bought catfood

very tired now, but have to go and pick up ds2 by car again. Then homework and supper. Thank goodness tomorrow is Friday. Bookclub was cancelled today; I am relieved actually.

We are reading The Poisonwood Bible, which I've read already but a long time ago Smile

ToffeeWhirl · 12/09/2013 15:15

Bitchy - you are having one of your scary-lists day, I see Grin.

My 'ta das' are hardly worth a list, so I'm not going to bother with that. I have done some Maths and Biology revision with DS1. I have fed the DC. I have cuddled poorly DS2. I have made flapjacks.

Now I'm going to go through my cupboards and see if there's anything worth eating in there.

ToffeeWhirl · 12/09/2013 15:16

Oops, nearly forgot -

JemimaMuddledUp · 12/09/2013 15:27

Toffee Our water bills went down when we moved into a house with a water meter, you may well find the same. We pay £20 per month, which is a good bit less than the standard water rate. We are a family of 5, so plenty of showers/toilet flushing/washing loads etc.

Do I get an extra flapjack for cheering you up with that information?
