FLYing through March: Fledglings Assemble

SilveryMoon · 28/02/2013 20:10

Welcome to the March Fledgling FLYers thread

... where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of and chatting along the way.

This little-and-often system is designed so that we can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in weekly designated zones of the house; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave us with more time to do other, more interesting things instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling we get when we are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once.

To avoid being inundated with details, we advise not signing up to the Big Tent

We are in the process of following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

Flylady site here

Don't worry if you are behind; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again anyway!

All the links for the babysteps and missions will be posted here every day and we'll all be here to cheer each other on.

Thanks to SC and Blue for leading us through January and February and for the brilliant OP I've just cut and pasted .

Let's get the old dust balls rolling for March!

ellesabe · 11/03/2013 20:14

Well my plans for this evening have well and truly gone up in smoke. Dh is hanging around like a bad smell, grumbling at the prospect of Call the Midwife, and my throat is reeeeally sore all of a sudden. Maybe I'm finally catching the cold that dd has had for a week. I think I'll just have a bath and sod the list go to bed Grin

elliepac · 11/03/2013 20:41

Not bad today, not bad. Am in phone so
can't copy list from earlier but:

ta da:-

Morning routine
Work
Washing in
Washing on airer
Washing out away
Dinner
Washing up
Maintenance tidy
Evening routine
Ds to cubs and back
Dd's parents evening (fantastic - clearly there are two versions of dd doing the roundsWinkGrin)

Getting an early night tonight as have Yr 7 parents evening tomorrow night so long day.

NickNacks · 11/03/2013 20:47

What the fuck is a 'show towel'? Hmm

ellesabe · 11/03/2013 21:21
Grin
SilveryMoon · 11/03/2013 21:27

NickNacks I'd love to have show towels and be all 'sleeping with the enemy' like, but far too much effort I think!
I do not know 1 person who has show towels......
All a bit Monica Gellar like with her different categories for her towels, guest, fancy guest etc. Hilarious

OP posts:
BlueEyeshadow · 11/03/2013 22:15

Evening all!

Actually have a ta da! list after days of CBA:
Laundry
Hoovering
Dusting
Mopped hard floors
General room rescues
S&S x2
Scrubbed taps and sinks
Wiped off random mysterious marks
Work admin stuff
Post office
DS2's 3yo booster jabs :(
Afternoon at boys' friends' house
Cooked tea
Cleaned kitchen
Caught up with last ever Being Human

Silvery / NickNacks - to me a "show towel" conjures up images of Crufts, so maybe it's a particularly fluffy one??

Ellie - the personal/social bit of DS1's midyear report had us thinking "are we talking about the same child?" too... Grin

Big waves all round.

pushmepullyou · 11/03/2013 23:26

Evening Smile

Well for once I too have a ta da list....

Ta da
Dye hair
Change beds
Fold and put away clothes
Room rescue living room
Online shopping
Meal plan
First coat of gloss on the Cupboard of Doom (floor length cupboard in the living room where all clutter is stowed until an inevitable annual collapse)

I'm not planing on being too ambitious tomorrow as I'm working in Cheltenham, which is a three hour drive each way so flying will probably be minimal and routines only tbh. I will try for the mission though as the bath mat could do with a wash Grin.

silvery my hair dye is a sort of mid ashy blonde. I don't do it very often as it is only a shade lighter than my natural hair colour but it just tips the balance between mousy and blonde.

Hope your DD's feeling better snowgirl. Actually have just noticed the time - hope she's asleep!

Right there with nicknacks on the show towels.

Enelya my DH has his own elements of daily routines - I also let him know which zone we're in and he sometimes makes an effort to notice weird obsessive chores that need doing in the relevant rooms. Filling gaps in the skirting boards with decorators caulk is his current obsession Hmm

Would like to write more personals but am absolutely knackered so need to go to bed. Big waves to sc, ellie, ellesabe, mercury, DEM, engels, issima, jdub, louise and everyone I've missed.

MercuryRising · 12/03/2013 06:39

Right after days of doing as close to nothing as possible I need to get back on track so here goes:

To do
Make beds
Up and dressed
Dcs up, fed, dressed and to school
Dry washing folded
Washing hung out Wm filled for Wed
Dw loaded/on/unloaded and reloaded
Rubbish/recycling out
Ss
Mission - wm wiped down
Hoover and dust throughout
Volunteer at school
Dcs lunchboxes made - today and tomorrow
Sort laundry so there are actually pants and socks in dcs drawers
Clean bathroom
Throw out old bath toys and empty bottles
Dinner and tidy
Dcs parents evening

I will be amazed if I achieve all of that, but I need to at least try and do that plus a few five minute room rescues as after just three days of doing not a lot the house is in a state of CHAOS.

Ive also got to bite the bullet and return to Weight Watchers after a month off - I am not looking forward to that!!

Big wing flaps to all Smile

superfluouscurves · 12/03/2013 06:59

Blimey O'Reilly it's been snowing all night... there is a proper blizzard blowing down our street ...

pushmepullyou · 12/03/2013 07:08

Morning meercury good luck with the list Smile. I am doing the 5:2 diet myself, but in stark contrast to what feels like the whole of the rest of mumsnet I have yet too lose weight!

Quick morning list dunp

To do
Washing
Tea out of freezwe
Unstack and restack dishwasher
Put online shopping away
Fold and put away clothes

I am sure there is more, but that will have to do for now. Hope everyone has a lovely day Smile

ellesabe · 12/03/2013 08:11

push and mercury I take my hat off you for sticking to any sort of diet. I am crap at it.

I have woken up feeling like complete death this morning. My glands are not only painful but visible on the side of my neck Sad

I'm definitely not up to leaving the house today but I can't imagine I'll have much of a Tada list with a baby and toddler to entertain all day when I just want to curl up in bed.

My only saving grace is that we are also snowed in so dh can't get to work. Hurrah Hmm

mrsbugsywugsy · 12/03/2013 08:56

was stuck inside yesterday as dd had a tummy bug and we had heavy snow.

I hate the snow at the moment as I live on a hill and don't feel safe taking dd out in the pram, so I am stuck inside. just saw that my work is closed for the day so if I wasn't on maternity I'd be happy.

enelya my dp is OK at 'helping' with the housework but rarely takes the initiative, he won't clean unless I ask him to. he doesn't seem to see the dirt.

silvery sorry you had a bad day yesterday.

to do
shine sink
15 minute declutter
list things on eBay
room rescue
washing

that doesn't sound much but if dd needs constant feeding and cuddling again it will be plenty!

Jdub · 12/03/2013 09:46

Good morning, so sorry to hear of tummy bugs and illness. Hope everyone is feeling better very soon. We are just cold (and that could be the reason behind dc1's mega strop this morning! Adamant he didn't want a hat though!!!)

Did have your tried Arnica cream or gel?

Argh my day not going to plan, Dh didn't go out until after lunch.

superfluouscurves · 12/03/2013 14:05

DEM I'll raise you three 'urghs' Grin

superfluouscurves · 12/03/2013 14:08

Very Envy of Pushme working near Cheltenham?

Get to see any races???

ellesabe · 12/03/2013 15:10

Well dh has finally made it to work now the snow has started melting and I'm feeling a bit better so here is a tentative list.

tada
Ate breakfast
Go back to bed with dd2
Ate lunch
Changed dds' beds
Send emails
Showered and dressed (only just!)
Sent dh to work with instruction to get some shopping on his way home

to do
Cook dinner
Tidy living room
Wash up
Shine sink

I find it absolutely impossible to declutter when dh is at home. I just put a load of dust covers from kids books in the recycling as dd just pulls them straight off and they end up tatty and all over the house. He took them out of the recycling and has left them on the sofa in case we 'need' them Hmm

How do others deal with hoarder husbands??

Snowgirl1 · 12/03/2013 15:58

Silvery and PMPY thanks for wishing DD well. She's much better today - DH is at home with her today.

Ellesabe hope you feel better soon. I live in dread of catching some nasty bug while DH is away and having to look after 14 month old while sick. Hope your little ones are gentle with you today. My DH is a bit of a hoarder. Of all things he hoards wood. We go to visit relatives and he will eye up bits of random wood lying by their skip and we end up going home with a bootful of wood. I shouldn't complain too much, as it's wood it tends not to be stored in the house. Although he has no room in the shed or garage left, so now has a trailer on the drive full of useless useful bits of wood and other tat.

Show towels? Them's the towels with impractical fancy embroidery on aren't they? Show towels makes it sound like towels that shouldn't be used, so a bit pointless to me. We don't have show towels, but will chuck all our bog standard towels in the wash in lieu of show towels. If our guests get a clean towel, they should be grateful. Show towels..pah!

Ta da
Up, dressed
Sandwiches made for DH & I
Bed not made as DH was still in it when I left - hope he's done it

To do
Hang washing out (unless DH has already done )
Play with and bath DD
Cook door - lacking enthusiasm and inspiration for that, just CBS
No decluttering tonight - out for quick drink with some other mummies
Chuck bath mats and towels in wash
Shine sink
S&S

BBL

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 12/03/2013 17:58

My mum has a hand towel on a little hook next to the sink for guests and another one on the rail over the radiator for family, woe betide anyone who uses the guest towel if they are actually family. The argument that I haven't lived there for 25 years and am technically a guest doesn't cut it.
