February Fledglings FLYing High

Welcome to the February Fledgling FLYers thread

... where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of Wine and chatting along the way.

This little-and-often system is designed so that we can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in weekly designated zones of the house; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave us with more time to do other, more interesting things instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling we get when we are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once.

To avoid being inundated with details, we advise not signing up to the Big Tent

We are in the process of following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

Flylady site here

Don't worry if you are behind; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again anyway!

All the links for the babysteps and missions will be posted here every day and we'll all be here to cheer each other on.

Thanks to SC for leading us through January and for the brilliant OP I've just cut and pasted Grin.

So come along in and park your dusters ready for Feb!

Evening.
Today I have:
Made beds
Swished and swiped
Fed cats
Emptied rubbish
Gone to work.
Cooked dinner
Played with boys
Tidied up stray items
Cleaned kitchen
Helped boys with homework
Laid out clothes for tomorrow
Ironing
Shined sink
Cleared and cleaned out kitchen drawers
Washed every item of cutlery and the tray
Made lunches for tomorrow

Am now cooking my dinner and pouring the wine.
Back in a bit to catch up. I didn't manage to read thread yesterday so sorry for all about me

ToffeeWhirl · 06/02/2013 20:20

Silvery - pouring the wine here too Grin. Back later.

Oops, just remembered I am Acting Thread Leader. Will try to sober up...

SilveryMoon · 06/02/2013 20:30

Goth - congrats about the job. Great news.
Blue - hope you and your ds are feeling better
Bitchy - sorry to hear about swimming struggles

elliepac · 06/02/2013 21:13

Waaaaaaah, my boiler has packed in now as well.

toffee don't sober up. Thread leader posts far more entertaining when tipsyWinkGrin.

Cuddledup · 06/02/2013 21:41

Goth brilliant news about the job - well done you must be chuffed to bits.
Blue I hope your temp has come down and DS2 is feeling a bit better.
Lilleth I agree there is definitely something in the air today that hasn't been so good. I had great plans for anti-procrastination day (ie: clear MT Washmore from the spare room bed) but ex P left a rather threatening voicemail on my iphone and I went into a tailspin of depression. I had to take solace in a large glass of gin - kindly provided by DH. It was only 5.30 ! Needless to say FLYing went out the window and I've spent the evening chilling out looking at holiday brochures with DD!

ANyway the sink is shiny, kitchen is clean but I've no idea what to wear for work tomorrow - oh well.

GoingGoingGoth · 06/02/2013 22:17

Thanks to everyone for the good wishes. Grin bit nervous about being full time again, but looking forward to not being office based. Hopefully by Easter Flying will be 2nd nature and with Dh helping out, the flat will stay clean & tidy Hmm

today's Ta-dahs
Dd to school
Beds
Windows
S&S
Litter tray
Washing up
5 min tidy in DD's bedroom
Bins out
Dry washing away
Sign on
Dinner
Wash up, scrub taps & SS
Completed DD's jumper

Bitchy can understand why you've stopped the swimming, hope tomorrow is better
Blue hope you all fell better soon, although looking forward to Toffee's drunk posts (well on my way too)

ToffeeWhirl · 06/02/2013 22:38

Sorry, Ellie, I fell asleep with DS2 and am now sober again. Hmm, could have another glass to inspire me though....

ToffeeWhirl · 06/02/2013 22:40

Damnit, DH has polished off the bottle Angry. Am now making myself a hot chocolate instead.

Back in a mo with linkies.

ToffeeWhirl · 06/02/2013 22:50

Thursday's links:

Babystep 7 is very important and one of the most useful, I think: lay out tomorrow's clothes before you go to bed.

Thursday is errand day.

And the mission is to wipe down your large kitchen appliances - dishwasher, fridge, etc.

Reading through thread now. Back with a round up in a mo.

ToffeeWhirl · 06/02/2013 23:20

Well, it's been a mixed bag for everyone today and I notice a number of people turning to alcohol for solace.

Cuddledup started the day well with high hopes of decluttering (did you get rid of the guitar?), but was brought back down to earth by phone call from exP Angry. Gin, DH and holiday brochures brought some comfort.

Feet was looking after a poorly DS and weeping at the Olympic DVD. (Thanks to your tip about 'How to Train Your Dragon', I started reading the first in the series to DS2 tonight, then left him to read for half an hour. He couldn't put the book down! Smile).

Bitchy had a very difficult day with DS refusing to go to school. Hope you have found the reason, Bitchy, and that tomorrow is better. Good idea to eliminate the swimming battle. There are only so many battles we can fight.

GoingGoingGoth has been doing lots of Flying and sewing. She also managed to get herself a new job Grin. Congratulations!

Blue and her DS2 are both ill Sad. Hope you are both on the mend soon.

Lilleth was upset by her DM's insensitive comments and confessed that she was having a CBA day. If that's what her lists look like on a CBA day, I dread to think how impressive they would be on a CAN-BA day!

Ellie managed to break her phone screen and her boiler packed up. Like so many of us, she sought comfort in the evil drink.

Silvery impressed us all with her proper Flying list, including washing all her cutlery and making lunches for tomorrow Shock. She rewarded herself with wine Smile.

I have had a good day home educating and a poor day Flying. Will try to remedy that now by tackling the messy kitchen before bed and laying out my clothes.

See you all tomorrow.

BitchyDragons · 07/02/2013 00:24

Thanks for the links and round up toffee

Yeah reason found. not alot i can do though unless someone can wave a magic wand and wizz up some social skills for ds. Oh and to get him to stop obsessing over something he has been obsessing over for the last 3 years.

Back to school tomo.

Going to make tomo m anti-procrastination day as i did the errands today.

SilveryMoon · 07/02/2013 06:48

Morning.
Just for the record, I don't do 'proper' flying. I don't often do missions but do 15 min detail clean instead and I'm still not doing babysteps.
Routines are going well though.
I'm thinking that after a few months it won't take quite as long to do everything so I'll get more done in 15 mins and might even fit the missions in. (I made note last year of every mission and added them to my detail list so they do get done. Sometimes).
Feeling rough but off to work.
Have a good day

superfluouscurves · 07/02/2013 08:14

Blue Sorry to hear you and your ds2 are feeling so rotten... hope you get better soon.

Many thanks Toffee for stepping in ...

Congratulations on your new job Goth! You'll be brill! Smile

Cuddledup Sorry your exp was horrible and upset you Angry

Lilleth Sympathies over the situation with your mum... sounds really hurtful and a bit like situation with my late ma ... she got on a plane once in the past 20 years but instead of choosing to go and see the one daughter and sil who live abroad + newly born grand-daughter and their house which she had never seen (ie us!) she went on holiday to the Canaries!!! Hey ho!! She wasn't being intentionally mean because she simply couldn't get why I was a bit Hmm.

Feetheart aw at your ds in his onesie!! Hope he feels a lot better soon.

Lilleth ditto over lack of will power regarding diet!! (I'm hoping to get there by the start of Lent on the 13th but I don't think motivation alone is going to cut it somehow - esp given the fact that I keep dreaming of lasagne Grin!)

Bitchy hope you and ds had a better morning today

Ellie sorry to hear about essential bits of equipment packing up on you

Encouraging wing flaps to Silvery and everyone else!

Well I just knew threre was a reason why I should have Flown earlier in the week Blush Am now in the throes of sewing costumes for school musical
(Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals) and dd's "Carnaval" costume tomorrow (cow-girl). With regard to latter, thought I would make do with material supplies I have rather than buy anything new, so am now circling the house eyeing up dh's old favourite suede jacket anything potentially disposable and leather Wink...

Feeling like one of 'those' stage mothers for first time, because in addition to above, dd has last minute song/ballet opportunity to audition for part in Peter Pan today and had precisely one and a half hours last night (outside of hwk and scheduled ballet lesson) to learn 3 bits of French dialogue, two songs, and one dance (and for me to rustle up suitable 'Wendy' costume ie nightie) and so we've had "the songs from the shows" before bed and before breakfast and on the school run. Being of a very delicate/grumpy disposition of a morning ...am now in need of strong coffee ...

superfluouscurves · 07/02/2013 09:20

Meant 'delicate' in the "night owl" sense - not the alcoholic sense - honest Grin!!!

Grin [hic]

BitchyDragons · 07/02/2013 09:41

Someone want to explain to me why ds was dressed and eaten his breakfast ready for school before the alarm went off? Confused

right need to end up with a scary done list today. first things first, hot shower.

to do kinda goes like this:
laundry
folding
ironing
my room
paperwork

Although I have a craft project that needs doing. Hmmmmm what to do, what to do

superfluouscurves · 07/02/2013 09:50

Bitchy aw, bless him ... Smile

lovehope2013 · 07/02/2013 10:01

I'm new here, hello all! Love the energy of this thread. Off to shine my sink now before heading to exercise class. Smile

superfluouscurves · 07/02/2013 10:07

A very warm welcome to Lovehope!

Jdub · 07/02/2013 10:11

Crikey crumbs! Overwhelmed at receipt of Golden Duster!!!
Just wish I could sustain my efforts! Sunday night and I am all set for the week, but come Wednesday night and I really start to lose impetus and momentum! I sit at work and make my lists and think 'yeah - I'll easily get that all sorted later' and by mid/end of the week, I'm knackered after work and then getting the small people to bed!!!

and so, my done list comprises
d/w emptied
up/dressed etc etc
nearly forgot my packed lunch - had to go back in to get it!

to do
make cheese scones
plan inset day activities
hotspots in my room
put away laundry
put a load of laundry on

I really love cooking but of an evening, the prospect of washing up/waiting for stuff to cool down always seems less attractive at 8.30pm than it does at 10.15am!!

Have a lovely day - it's beautiful here - golden sunshine!

LillethTheCat · 07/02/2013 11:27

Thanks for the links and round up Toffee.
Blue hope you are OK and you are back to normal soon.

Have to laugh at how apparently my list looks great, when in reality the maximum time something takes me is 10 mins (apart from washing up). A lot of my list is simply 30 sec stuff. Yesterday everything (apart from going to the skip which is 20 mins there, 5 mins emptying car, 20 mins back) took me just over 2 hours all in. Its not exactly a huge amount. I should be doing far more. If I spent an extra hour a day (15 mins a time with 10 min breaks) I would achieve a whole load more.

Anyway to todays list

tada

  • make beds
  • Turn on washing machine
  • Dry laundry
  • Wash up after breakfast

to do

  • put laundry away
  • fill washing machine for Fri
  • Wash up after lunch
  • Shine Sink (if DH has washed up after tea as I wont get in till 10)
  • Fri list
  • Tidy up front room after DCs are in bed
  • Get tomorrow's clothes ready
  • go to AAT course.
  • Ring airline with a quick question about payments (going to do now)

Ellie hope you manage to sort your phone out.
Cuddled Apart from the voicemail message Angry sounds like a lovely evening.
SC Hope you manage to get the costumes and practicing sorted.
Lovehope Welcome.
Jdub know the feeling regarding losing the will after a while. Its all very easy and exciting to make a list and imagine it all being done, but to actually do it.....

BBL

BitchyDragons · 07/02/2013 12:39

Ta da
knit pair of baby booties - they just need sewing up.

Laundry - 1 load on

LillethTheCat · 07/02/2013 13:16

Have you seen this thread? Sounds something that we can put on our lists. Im going to try it tomorrow. Is it bad that I saw the thread and thought of you all?

BitchyDragons · 07/02/2013 13:47

See this would be bad for asthma sufferers, but then they shouldn't really be having air fresheners of any kind so meh.
