Back to Fly school for September Fledglings

Welcome to the September 2011 Fledgling Flying thread! Hang up your microfibre cloths and park your buckets here!!

[Sorry - I've namechanged again - but remain SC]

This is where from the 1st of the month, we attempt to declutter and follow the 30-step wisdom of Flylady (minus cutesy language and a surfeit of e-mails) with lots of chat and support and mutual motivation along the way. (More info available here )

Humungous thanks to our previous thread leader Blue for navigating us all through the August school holidays...and for doing it so consistently and well!!

As usual we will be following a three-pronged approach - and don't worry - we are all at different stages. Some of us (SC stares at feet) -are even embarrassingly stuck at decluttering stage after two years Blush

  • repeat or start baby steps (again!)
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone

or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

All newcomers welcome!

messymammy · 01/09/2011 12:33

Hi guys, still havent had a smoke, really wanted one on the way back from school but didn't.
so far my ta da list looks like this,
up dressed and breakfasts x3
dd to school on time
call into my mother for more breakfast Blush
walk home
Supermarket
dishwasher

Still to do,
make dinner
collect dd and try to resist smoking with the other mums
Dreaded homework
etc etc etc

listen to this, dds new teacher is our next door neighbour!am sure this will be both a blessing and a curse. The threat of teacher living next door is up there with Santa in my book but am sure she will have heard me shouting at dd to sit down, tidy up,eat dinner,go to bed repeat ad infinitum!

substantiallycompromised · 01/09/2011 13:02

Quick stop to check how everyone has been getting on:

Hello Toffee Smile I was wondering where you'd got to!! Hope your ds isn't getting too worried by the prospect of school.

Messy well done for holding out! Shock at teacher living next door. As you say, I'd find that, er, a bit inhibiting. We live in a terraced house and I'd be worried if she could hear when we were putting dd too bed late or allowing her to watch too much telly!

Rowingboat and Fuzzled I've also been doing some last minute personal grooming today so I look half way decent at school gate [shallow and vein emoticon]. Have definitely let things slide during the holidays. Many of the mothers at dd's school are thin, stylish and young Italian and Spanish ladies who speak five languages with ease ...and I feel woefully lacking in comparison. Not helped by the fact that I was determined to get below a certain weight during the holidays and er, I haven't ....

A warm welcome to Idrilis. Sounds like you are off to a great start and you'll find lots of wine drinking whinging and biscuit eating motivation on here Wink

Keep going Silvery

Hi Silken arf re Nesbit. Ditto here!!

Waves to Swan [doppelganger alert] webs on hydrangeas here too and I am also consulting my dummies guide to computing for tomorrow!

Silvery I found the FatFairy book OK. I didn't think it particularly added anything new to the website although the information is easier to access. I know others on here found it more useful than I did. It does explain more about the overall philosophy though. My one bugbear is that it physically fell apart on me (pages came unglued from spine) and that wasn't, I can assure you, because of my assiduous attention to Flying.

Better get on. I got distracted this morning with sewing materials and spent longer shopping than anticipated. Now only a couple of hours before dd gets back from school. I forgot how short the day is! Better get cracking. Lots happening this afternoon/evening so I won't be back on until round-up time.

Keep at it everyone!!

Happy flying!

substantiallycompromised · 01/09/2011 14:47

rowingboat oh, definitely don't go that far, wear the scruffy ordinary clothes I put on for the day ifyswim, trying not to buy clothes for me atm until I've lost weight! Have wielded the tweezers and the hair-dryer though!!Grin

Am currently sewing: one ragdoll (Victorian, complicated one) plus two sets of clothes + underwear for god-daughter, one ragdolll (less complicated) plus various clothes for dd, one mini patchwork quilt bed set + pillow and sheets for dd's doll's bed, one drawstring ballet bag, one big, sturdy canvas holdall for lugging horse riding stuff about in. Trouble is, I am doing them all at once and don't have dedicated sewing room = chaos!!

Whyistherum well done!!!

Must go - school run!!

OP posts:
swanriver · 01/09/2011 14:48

rowing once had to tackle moths in old house. Did following.
ruthlessly throw out anythign with moth, unless I was prepared to dryclean, or hot wash it. Also I put some things in freezer in plastic bag for good measure.
moved furniture and hoovered underneath like crazy, as moths don't like sunlight, and hide in crevices, dark corners.
Put some moth balls in every loft storage bag despite foul smell, just to stop moths taking over loft
never hung up once worn clothes in cupboards as moths like pheremones
also ruthlessly inspected cane furniture, furniture with animal glue, old rugs, old upholstery, feathers that sort of thing and chucked if necessary, or scrubbed down with hot soapy water in garden

rowingboat · 01/09/2011 21:58

Hi all,
don't think I'll be doing much more flying today.
Swan that ruthless thing, I'm not really feeling very ruthless, but hopefully, tomorrow I will be feeling full of murderous hatred and will be able to tackle the moths. At the moment I feel like handing the house keys to the moths and going to live somewhere else.
Great advice though, all duly noted and tucked away in my head.

Substantially I like your list of projects, good for you! Grin I go to a sewing club every so often and we quite often have projects which go on for years, they just keep reappearing. I have to keep lengthening things for DS because he insists on growing and my project becomes too small before it is even worn.

Going to read flylady to see what babystep 2 is. Probably hotspots?

rowingboat · 01/09/2011 22:00

Oh baby step 2 is getting dressed which I did, otherwise it gets a bit cold.
Nighty night!

HauntedLittleLunatic · 01/09/2011 22:10

I'm in....need to start with babysteps tho. Hello everybody

I have had a major declutter/spring clean/IY frenzy over lsast few weeks as hoping to put house on market. Could do with keeping onj top of it so hoping babysteps will help. DId start them AGES ago but didn't get past about day 20is if that.

I am, however cheatiogn on day 1...I have only just seen this thread and I am feeling poorly so my sink won' be shined...but will do 2 days in one tomorrow.

Oh and other HUGE caveat...I am starting a PGCE next week so although a routine is going o be a necessity I am not sure where I will find the time for this but I have to give it a try and you have to be stern with me.

OuchPassVodka · 01/09/2011 22:18

Evening. I am just making tea.

Very late night tonight. Ds' training went on longer then i had realised. Although did discover that the washing up and shink shining fairies had been busy whilst we are out. Did I tell you my sis is fabulous? Grin

done
Bought new type of wool and nearly completely knit a fancy looking scarf whilst watching training.
ds' training
Out somewhere nice
Sink shined -but not by me

Just about to go to bed. At a decent-ish time. Although not quite so decent by the time i have sorted out tea.

Hope you all have good fly days tomo. I shall be in and out with meetings and stuff tomo (from very early to very late so expect me to be in the naughty corner if I am here)

Night.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 01/09/2011 22:27

Evening all,

Haunted - welcome on board, sounds as though you will be right at home on this thread.

Well, my new resolve to do well in September went by the wayside a bit today because the weather was fabulous, DS went to football camp and I wanted to make the most of having a day on my own with DD. We went shopping, out for lunch to a cafe I used to take her to last year before she started school and while DS was at school, which made me feel all nostalgic for the pre-school days. Then an hour with friends in the park, picked up DS from football camp, which he has loved, he won a trophy and was very pleased with himself.

Er, Flying.

Basic morning routines done, a bit lax to only do that as we didn't leave the house till 9.45.
Shine sink - yes
Decluttering - did a bit of that in the hall, which wasnt too bad as a lot of it was cleared out for the front door being replaced a couple of weeks ago.

Hotspots - done a few
Detailed cleaning - nul points
Evening routine - not really needed as no work or school tomorrow.
I did follow Flylady advice regarding my kitchen table, hotspotted it and put a big bunch of flowers chosen by DD in the middle, it does look nice.

Oh, and I have started applying Flylady at work, the place I work is quite cluttered and hotspotty, so I have made a start there too. Funnily enough most of the women are entirely in agreement, most of the men have never even noticed and don't think it's their problem [sexist emoticon]

How many hotspots do you reckon you have in your house? I reckon I have got at least 3 hotspots in every downstairs room, plus 2 in my bedroom, the DCs rooms are just giant forest fires TBH. Most of the hotspots fill up with crap again within a day of clearing them, the others take about a week. How can I stop them? If I did them all every day it would take about an hour!

WhyIsTheRumAlwaysGone · 01/09/2011 22:33

check monthly budget
RSVP wedding

To Do
