Following on from the February Fledgling Flyers thread, welcome to March. This is the thread that follows the Flylady website (loosely) for getting your home decluttered and your housework into routines, whilst dispensing tea and chat freely.

A big thank you to PushMePullYou for leading us through February ably assisted by ToffeeFudgeCake. We had a huge influx of new posters as well, which was lovely, anyone else who is lurking, please say hello, you will be very welcome.

We have a fairly relaxed attitude to Flying and take some of the babysteps - such as getting dressed to lace-up shoes - with a pinch of salt. We also strongly advise against signing up for the FlyLady emails.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's tips on restoring order to our homes, using one of the following methods:

  1. Babysteps
  2. Babysteps + 15 mins daily decluttering
  3. Babysteps + daily missions

Following the babysteps helps to establish daily routines and build a weekly plan.

If you are overwhelmed by the mess in your home, start with just one thing: shine your sink. It's amazing what you can achieve by just doing a bit at a time!

Just popping in before I start work. The house is a mess and the laundry is piling up, despite the fact that I washed two loads yesterday (DS wet the bed yet again last night). I really need to finish my work before I tackle the house, but hope to have a bit of time to do so before the school run.

The DDs went off to school in their Fasching costumes this morning - DD1 as Snow White, DD2 as a nurse after she found out that her two best friends would be dressing up after all. School often ends early for Fasching and I was a bit worried they'd be out of school before 11 am, but luckily only DD1 finishes an hour early so they'll both be out at 11.50.

Will be back later with a list if I have time. Hope everyone has a good day - thinking of you, PMPY! Smile

Babieseverywhere · 08/03/2011 07:39

Hello..I found my bathroom yesterday and half way through during the kitchen. I have tried and failed to Fly before, so my new approach is to do basic cleaning whilst deep cleaning and decluthering one room at a time for as long as it takes.

I have one cupboard left in the kitchen and them I am moving onto the children room (including repainting), then hall, living room, dining room, our bedroom and lastly the spare room, which will take weeks all on it's own.

Wish me luck....I need it ;)

Meglet · 08/03/2011 07:58

Half-heartedly signing up. I tried to do it a couple of years ago but never stuck to it. I have a pipe-dream about moving house next year so need to de-clutter, tidy, clean and paint before that happens.

Will keep an eye on this thread to inspire me Smile.

Does changing the kitchen roll over count as my first chore Wink.

LadyInPink · 08/03/2011 08:15

PMPY oooh how exciting, thinking of you and hope you have your newest in your arms by tonight Smile

Terms of Endearment..[sob] I know that film so well, having watched it when it first came out in cinema and frequently thereafter...now I was amazed how YOUNG Jack Nicholson looked, and how dated all the 1982 clothes were. They all seemed normal when I first watched it!

MollysChambers · 08/03/2011 10:22

Morning all,

Good luck PMPY!
How exciting!!

Sorry, didn't come back last night. Was to busy decluttering so I hope I'm forgiven! I can now see the floor in the spare room - managed to get rid of some of the junk accumulated in there which I'm very pleased about. Still got ebay and charity shop stuff lurking but not sure I have the energy to do that today. Also worked my way through the ironing.

Today:
Dr appointment done
Dishwasher emptied done
Beds made done
Mission
Yesterdays mission Grin
Hotspot
Mop kitchen floor
Load in washing machine
Breadmaker on
Swish and swipe
Rehome clutter from dd's room

Makingchanges · 08/03/2011 10:24

Morning all. Whoever posted about checking your smoke alarm, you have encouraged me to do this, I always think about this at night when DD is in bed, usually after watching something on TV. I'm adding it to my list.

  • Mission
  • May attempt control journal - never did this one
  • Empty clothing drawers and throw away old/unfitting clothes and put away folded clothes
  • Personal statement for job apps coming up
  • Put together folder for placement
  • 3 x washing - OneDone*
  • Clean out freezer
  • Clean out fridge - Done
  • Parents evening
  • Swimming lesson
  • Sort out uni paperwork pile at side of PC
  • Shopping - done
  • Check smoke alarm

Also DH is working from home - I find I never get as much done when he is here as he gets under my feet.

Right off to make a cuppa and get started

ballinderrymum · 08/03/2011 10:30

happy pancake day everyone!

DD had check up at eye clinic today and has to wear a patch for 6 hours a day - not looking forward to it but trying to be optimistic.

clouding over here and getting cold :( where has spring gone?

away to get flying :)

Toffeefudgecake · 08/03/2011 10:32

LOL at your link, Nettie Grin. How did you get it to be so long Confused?

Must, must, must get some paid work done today. I'll be getting more through soon and I'm not even nearly finished with this batch.

Very short list:

School routine done
AM routine
Home ed doing
Work

Minimal Flying today. I haven't tackled any of the morning jobs yet, so the kitchen is full of unwashed dishes, but I need to prioritise work instead. DS and I are sitting at the dining-room table, working together. He keeps chatting, which is distracting, but if I don't stay near him he starts sneaking onto his favourite Roblox website, instead of BBC Bitesize.

Hello to the regulars and welcome to the newbies Smile.

Back later, hopefully with a decent amount of paid work done.

Toffeefudgecake · 08/03/2011 10:35

Forgot to say: we have our car back! Cost a fortune and we were without it for nearly two weeks, but it's such a relief to have it back, especially for DH who can now drive to work again.

simonedeboudoir · 08/03/2011 10:36

Morning everyone, happy pancake day Grin

Good luck PMPY hope everything goes well today, how exciting! St DavidsSt Davids

my list for today:

shopping in town done
washing up from last night Blush clean kitchen, shine sink
clean bathroom
make beds and general tidy upstairs
hoover everywhere
email accountant
mend dh's glove
collect dds
make pancakes! Smile

back later

ballinderrymum · 08/03/2011 10:37

pmpy good luck today :) so excited for you

simonedeboudoir · 08/03/2011 10:45

toffeefudgecake hope you and ds have a productive day. Great news about getting the car back Smile

ballinderrymum sorry to hear that. Hopefully will become routine after a while and a bit easier to bear. How long will she have to wear it?

i really am going now

LinzerTorte · 08/03/2011 10:47

Welcome to Babieseverywhere and Meglet. Smile

Have just finished and sent off work and invoice, so now have all of about five minutes to get the house looking shipshape again before the DDs are out of school. Somehow, I don't think it's going to happen. Grin

I need a list but don't have time to write one! Maybe after lunch.

LinzerTorte · 08/03/2011 10:49

ballinderrymum How long will your DD have to wear the eye patch for? I remember having to wear one when I was little; you do get used to it surprisingly quickly.

swanriver · 08/03/2011 11:03

my ds does that Toffee - I now try and avoid computer for any research for ds1 as he quickly strays onto miniclip.. dd wanders off to Moshi Monsters and as for ds2 he will get sucked into endless football replay downloads. I wonder if there is any way to block certain sites for brief intervals?

at this stage in morning a feeling of panic comes over me. There is so much housework to do, so much extra organising (the 2 parties for example [help!) and dh is going away on business for three days tomorrow.

Just trying to focus.
What I reallyNeed to do today is

I hour piano practise to avoid panic on Wed/Thurs
hoover
do all the ironing now, and be done with it (ginormous pile nettie - was hoping ironing lady would come yesterday, but nope...)
ring bank
buy extra food as per menu plan when I see what veg box is.

then see what time I have over

*done
washing out of kitchen
cleared tables, worktops
decluttered more from front room
decluttered more from yard
dw on
hall rescued

Toffeefudgecake · 08/03/2011 11:22

Linzer - Envy at you finishing work and sending it off

Swan - I don't know whether you can block certain sites for a short time - that would be a good idea. We use NetNanny, so it might be possible, I suppose. The funny thing is, I tell DS off for straying onto Roblox, but he tells me off for straying onto MN (like now!). Maybe I should block MN too.

Ballinderry - I'm sorry for your DD. Hopefully, it won't be for too long, will it? I remember being upset when my DS1 had to start wearing glasses, but I just had to remind myself of the benefits.

Hello, Simone. We are having a productive morning so far, thanks. Hope you are too.

So far, DS has researched deep-sea monsters (if you can call watching YouTube clips 'research' Wink), revised tables, charts and graphs on BBC Bitesize and is now practising spelling on the same website. I have managed to wade through several pages of incredibly dry text, so that is a small achievement.

Right, break over. Back to the hard slog.

swanriver · 08/03/2011 11:25

And there is the whole garden to deal with Hmm just went outside in search of a flowerpot.
Loads of lovely bulbs coming up , but in need of serious overhaul. And dh is not going to do any of it, alas. He might mow lawn occasionally Smile
Sheds to be sorted, window boxes, rusty implements to be oiled, renovated, rubbish, pruning, patio needs scrubbing with one of high pressure things.
Still too cold (it is eastfacing) to stay out for long though...

toffee hope you are managing to get some paid work done - I admire you managing both sides. It must also be very good for ds to see you working.

swanriver · 08/03/2011 11:26

x-post

systemsaddict · 08/03/2011 11:42

Thinking of PMPY how exciting!!

Welcome Babieseverywhere, your strategy sounds much like mine except I have been going round doing 'visible' decluttering one room at a time first (which has given me a huge sense of achievement) and will next move on to 'deep' decluttering, ie cupboards drawers etc, again one room at a time. But not till I've regained my breath from the visible decluttering, which I did in a motivated frenzy over the past couple of weeks.

Actually I am not being completely accurate here, my strategy was first to spend several months on this thread achieving such babysteps as emptying dishwasher and hanging up one load of laundry - it has taken me that long to build up to the decluttering!

Still just focusing on maintaining this week. Amazing just how much picking up / putting away there is to do, now I can see it.

Celestialstarlight · 08/03/2011 11:43

Morning all and hello to the new flyers Smile

I'm going out for lunch with some friends this afternoon. From past experiences these luches seem to last until bed time so I don't think they'll be any flying done today. Not on a housework level anyway Hmm
Anyway if I'm back at a decent hour I'll go back and read over the thread to catch up with you all.

Have a nice day everyone
