Where to move in North England?

Hi 😊,
Just wondering any nice places to live or a 'good middle class town' in North Of England (maybe in North West, I am not too bothered). I want to be a 20-50 drive from Burnley (but can stretch a bit further 10/20 mins).

I have a 5,2 and 1 year old so I would like good schools and activities. It would be nice for the place to be in a small nice town (maybe a bit of countryside) but near a city (possibly Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool). My budget is around 600k but I am flexible and it would be nice to be near the coast but it is not necessary. I have looked into places like Cheshire, Buxton, Formby, Ribble Valley. Please give me any suggestions 😊😊 Thank you

South Ribble, just outside Preston. Some nice semi rural areas.
Hutton, Longton, New Longton, Higher Penwortham.
Half an hour from the coast, an hour to Manchester, Liverpool, the lakes. Excellent schools and colleges. Very affordable on your budget.

Barrowford

Lytham is nice (not Lytham st Anne’s)
Chester
Kirby Lonsdale

Not sure how far they are from Burnley, but they’re all very nice.

How close to a city do you want to be?

Some ideas:

Clitheroe
Todmorden
Ramsbottom
Hebden Bridge
Glossop
Skipton
Saltaire
Lytham
Penwortham

Ilkley is much nicer than Harrogate and 45 mins to Burnley

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/06/2024 19:45

mateysmum · 09/06/2024 19:49

Ilkley is overpriced. East Yorkshire beautiful but probs too far

mateysmum · 09/06/2024 20:00

A lot of these suggestions would pish or exceed your target travel time. Lytham, Chester, Saltaire, Kirkby Lonsdale all a stretch.
It's not middle class but Bury is a good location wise in between Burnley and Manchester.
For historic reasons a lot of town around Burnley are pretty working class but the outskirts are close to beautiful countryside and the motorway network with quick access to Manchester and Leeds.
I'm thinking villages like Read, Wilpshire, Whalley.
For towns definitely Clitheroe or Skipton. Preston and surroundings I don't know so well and you would need to be on the right side of town foe a shorter commute.

Ilkley is brilliant! Sunday Times best place to live last year or the year before, brilliant state and private schools, good trains to Leeds and Bradford, easy access to the Dales, lots of outdoor activities and sports, good arts scene.

Lancaster is 50 mins to Burnley. You’d get a beautiful house for 600k there or in the villages nearby. Very middle class having the big Uni there and Uni of Cumbria as well (even though it’s in Lancashire). Only 20 mins to Preston or Kendal. Close the the Lake District and Morecambe Bay. Good schools etc.
