Where to move in North England?

Hi 😊,
Just wondering any nice places to live or a 'good middle class town' in North Of England (maybe in North West, I am not too bothered). I want to be a 20-50 drive from Burnley (but can stretch a bit further 10/20 mins).

I have a 5,2 and 1 year old so I would like good schools and activities. It would be nice for the place to be in a small nice town (maybe a bit of countryside) but near a city (possibly Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool). My budget is around 600k but I am flexible and it would be nice to be near the coast but it is not necessary. I have looked into places like Cheshire, Buxton, Formby, Ribble Valley. Please give me any suggestions 😊😊 Thank you

If I had to drive from south Manchester to Burnley every day, then that would quite quickly become extremely stressful and tiring. Tackling the M60 in rush hour every day - no thanks. Once a week - no problem.
Formby and Southport are again over an hour to over 11/2 hours depending on traffic.
Towns to the north of Manchester tend to be more post industrial and not as "naice" as the Cheshire towns but you very quickly get into beautiful green countryside (very underrated) and many of the posher bits are in the villages just outside the towns.

In summary to echo others, if you have to be in Burnley every day, stick north of Manchester and no further west than Preston. If you only need to travel occasionally, then the Fylde coast, and south Manchester are all within range.

Thank you, I've been thinking about Formby alot because it's an ok distance to Burnley and of course it has a beach.
How is Southport I visited about 3 years ago but didn't get to see everything.

Southport / Formby to Burnley at rush hour could take up to 2 hours.

Personally if you need to go to Burnley everyday / most days, I would concur with everything @mateysmum mum has said. Stay north of Manchester, west of the Pennines and Preston should be your cut off point.

Thank you I don't need to travel to Burnley everyday, just every week or two for family but I want to be close to them but I don't want to stay in any areas in the Burnley area
I'm thinking South Ribble Valley 😊

I'd say I would go to Burnley about every two weeks for family and friends but I still want to be close but not too close as I don't want to be in any areas in Burnley

Clitheroe. Beautiful location, hills, river, lovely small town. I nearly said Lytham but Clitheroe is so much closer to Burnley..
Or some of the nearby outposts.

Hi. Sorry to nit pick but it's really quite annoying when anyone, particularly southerners to describe the North of England as though it's one homogeneous place. It sounds like you would like to live in the North West and near some specific places. It would be odd if I talked about asking about where to live in 'The South', but actually only wanted to live near Portsmouth for example.
'The North' is a very large and very varied place, obviously.

Same people who think everywhere in the north you can get a 4 bed detached for 250k 😂

Also that there's no other reason to live here because there's no decent schools, culture, employment, diversity or amenities, everyone's an ill-educated racist who voted to leave the EU.

I'm just here to amuse myself about how far away people will suggest to make sure the OP knows about the 'right' MN approved areas no matter how ridiculous the travel would be, and predictably we have suggestions of south Manchester, Ilkley, Harrogate and York.

It was just the title of my post? Does it really matter? Then in my actual message I described the location more. It was too get more suggestions

You can't get a 4 bed for that price 'everywhere' in the north, there's some places you can and some you can't I don't think people actually say that

Wrong bit of the north ... you need to read the OP post not just the title! 😂

Lancaster, Kendal?

Kendal is well over an hour from Burnley, and I think is probably quite expensive.

I wouldn't live anywhere that required commuting on that stretch of the M6 with no good alternative - when there's a lot of holiday traffic and/or accidents an roadworks it's best avoided.

Hexham.

Near Newcastle airport. Has a theatre, cinema, close to the country, lots of activities and groups, great restaurants too.
