Where to move in North England?

Hi 😊,
Just wondering any nice places to live or a 'good middle class town' in North Of England (maybe in North West, I am not too bothered). I want to be a 20-50 drive from Burnley (but can stretch a bit further 10/20 mins).

I have a 5,2 and 1 year old so I would like good schools and activities. It would be nice for the place to be in a small nice town (maybe a bit of countryside) but near a city (possibly Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool). My budget is around 600k but I am flexible and it would be nice to be near the coast but it is not necessary. I have looked into places like Cheshire, Buxton, Formby, Ribble Valley. Please give me any suggestions 😊😊 Thank you

Lancaster is 50 mins to Burnley. You’d get a beautiful house for 600k there or in the villages nearby. Very middle class having the big Uni there and Uni of Cumbria as well (even though it’s in Lancashire). Only 20 mins to Preston or Kendal. Close the the Lake District and Morecambe Bay. Good schools etc.

Thank you I will look into Lancaster as it seems quite big and near a coast

15-20 mins from bury. Area of natural beauty. Loads of great independent shops and restaurants. Canals and walks.

Crosby in Liverpool

York, which is about 20 mins to half an hour from Leeds: It's fantastic for connections for the north and the south.

Not as big as a large inner city, but not as small as a town/village and certainly a lovely place to live.

It might be a bit far for you, though. I thought I would throw it in the ring as you have mentioned, Leeds.

Not been mentioned yet so I'll put in a good word for Chorley - I work in East Lancashire including Burnley and from me it's a 30ish minute drive.

The town isn't chocolate box beautiful, but lots of amenities, good schools, easy access to coast and countryside. We live on the rural edge and can be in town in 5 mins, countryside in 5 mins, coast in 30 mins, Manchester in 30 mins (plus there's the train line which goes to Manchester Airport and Preston/further north. M61/m6/m65 all on the doorstep.

You'd get a lot for your budget round here too. I'd suggest somewhere like Whittle-le-Woods, wheelton/higher wheelton for rural, Euxton for suburban-ish but most areas are lovely.

Notaflippinclue · 09/06/2024 21:18

For obvious reasons - the late queen once said if she was a commoner she would live in the Trough of Bowland

Pipsquiggle · 09/06/2024 21:20

Have a look wherever there is a Booths supermarket - it's on a par, if not posher than Waitrose.
Wherever there is a Booths is a lovely town

South Manchester?

Didsbury
Chorlton
Heaton Moor

Yes York is one of my favourites but it's too far I'm guessing Lancaster is similar to York not sure so I'll look in Lancaster instead

Poynton in Cheshire is lovely. Proper villagey feel but good shops and a lively community. Good train links to Manchester. It might stretch your time limits to Burnley but would be worth seeing if it is feasible
