What kind of napkins do you use at meal times?

We normally use basic kitchen roll and I buy some nicer paper napkins when we have guests around but am a bit fed up and was thinking of getting some fabric napkins instead.
What do people normally use? Do you also do napkin rings? Any nice ones to recommend?

The butler ususlly puts our the individually monogrammed ones, but on his nights orf, we use kitchen roll, rather like yourself.

LegoTherapy · 01/07/2024 16:34

I have some Waterford fabric ones. I can't stand the feel or sound of paper napkins. I'd like some new ones but they have to feel right and have no sound! Following with interest.

We use cloth napkins. Don’t use napkin rings , we just fold our napkins in different ways ( only 2 of us)
We supplement with kitchen roll for messy finger food. I am a messy eater so they generally need washing a couple of times a week.

Peonies12 · 01/07/2024 16:37

We use cloth napkins to reduce waste, only use kitchen roll for very messy meals. Only two of us - probably wash them 1/2 times a week.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 01/07/2024 16:38

I don’t use any.

However, I can fold a napkin into a rabbit and I don’t get enough opportunities to demonstrate this so maybe I should get some.

(Yes, this post is a stealth boast.)

We have simple checked cotton napkins that we use every evening. We have our own napkin rings so that we know whose is whose and can use them a few times between washing. Our kids got rings with names on years ago and still use them now in their early 20s when they are at home!

It's not something I had at home growing up but DH did and now it feels really strange to have a meal without them.

TheShellBeach · 01/07/2024 16:41

Cloth napkins here, too.

DaftyLass · 01/07/2024 16:42

We use a linen/flax blend , nice and soft, easy to wash and iron

pinkspeakers · 01/07/2024 16:43

We're more likely to use paper napkins if guests round as it's a pain to wash them after just one meal. Depends on numbers and formality. Smaller numbers and posher meal may get cloth. Large numbers and simple food likely to get paper.

BlownItJellyHead · 01/07/2024 16:43

We use what we call "the useless tea towels" - you know the type that won't actually fucking dry anything and just leave damp fluff over everything.

And they're not "napkins" or "serviettes" or "towels" or whatever in our house. They're called "finger blankets"

RobynDeCantersCar · 01/07/2024 16:44

We have cloth napkins and have done for years since the children made less mess. If they haven't had something slopped down them they are reused the next day. I just put them in the wash with the dish cloths, tea towels and kitchen hand towels load. The dishcloths are changed out several times a day, I have loads of them and I have a large capacity machine.

DaftyLass · 01/07/2024 16:44

These are what we have

I use a cotton napkin daily.

For less formal buffet meals, BBQ's etc I use paper ones.

For more formal lunches or dinners with guests, cotton ones (the good ones!).

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 01/07/2024 16:52

We don't use napkins at regular meal times at all. And I never buy kitchen roll. There is a pack of paper christmas napkins at the back of the drawer somewhere - but as they only get used at one time of year IF someone asks for one they last for years!

I can understand why you might want them to make a table look nice for a special occasion, but on a general day to day basis why do you need them?

purplecorkheart · 01/07/2024 16:53

Cloth unless it is very messy food or highly coloured with turmic. We just fold them at our places at table. Admittedly we normally only eat at table for dinner.

shellyleppard · 01/07/2024 16:55

@TheLightSideOfTheMoon ooo I can make a water lilly. .....do you fancy trading patterns?? 🙏❤️

Caspianberg · 01/07/2024 17:00

Cloth napkins. Bought some nice dark green cottons ones a couple of years ago.

We dont all use them every meal. Ds uses more often as a halfway point after ditching bib if he needs to wipe face or hands during meal. Dh and I only really have one for particular messy meals like tacos, or if we have guests visit.
Haven’t napkin rings yet as something else to store, just fold in triangle if being fancy.

Should try a swan one day

ginasevern · 01/07/2024 17:00

Blimey, all these people using linen napkins on a regular basis. I use paper napkins for buffets, BBQs and special occasions like Christmas. Otherwise it's kitchen towel for messy day to day foods. I feel so inadequate.

Ndemikwa · 01/07/2024 17:01

We use basic kitchen rolls and fabric napkins on special occasions birthdays, Easter , Christmas and when have guests around. Check at The white Company and Summerill and Bishop, I have few things from there

I can too, but I admit it has never occurred to me to use this arcane talent.

Just plain cotton/linen napkins here, too, OP. Clearly we eat like absolute pigs, because we absolutely need them. They just get chucked in the laundry. No napkin rings used, though I think we own some, somewhere.

Maybe you're just a tidier eater? Grin

White linen damask. Bliss!

MrsTartanTeacosy · 01/07/2024 17:10

I’m definitely buying some cloth napkins tonight, thanks to this thread. And napkin rings.

LegoTherapy · 01/07/2024 17:13

People use them for more than one meal before washing 😱
