What kind of napkins do you use at meal times?

We normally use basic kitchen roll and I buy some nicer paper napkins when we have guests around but am a bit fed up and was thinking of getting some fabric napkins instead.
What do people normally use? Do you also do napkin rings? Any nice ones to recommend?

Yes we use cloth napkins, current everyday ones look like the tea towels you get with a stripe. Aldi did some bold coloured linen ones a few years ago and I would love some more. For Christmas we have special ones.

Though I do confess to have a drawer of muslins that we also use

hexsnidgett · 01/07/2024 17:17

I don't find I need them for most meals, only for big messy burger type meals when out.
I have nice red ones for Christmas, but that's it.

Throughthebluebells · 01/07/2024 17:24

Linen if we have guests. Paper at Christmas or for picnics to save work - I enjoy choosing pretty paper ones for this. Most of the time however we don't use any at all. My parents used linen napkins in individually named silver napkin rings every day (only washed when needed) but I never really felt it was necessary.

Usually paper napkins. I cannot bear it when I go to mil and there is nothing. It's a hill I'll die on.

Oh he have linen for Easter, Christmas.

People use them for more than one meal before washing 😱

I think that's normal enough. Our French friends have an individual napkin ring for everyone in the family (nothing fancy, just wooden ones with different carved designs), and your own napkin goes into your ring after a meal, unless it's been total food carnage for some reason.

MartyFunkhouser · 01/07/2024 17:48

We don’t use napkins day to day. But we do a lot of hosting and use linen or cotton napkins (plain white or cream). We have a large drawer full.

I loathe paper ones, but will use them if we’re having a party.

Pumpkindoodles · 01/07/2024 17:49

I need to know how messy everyone’s meals are that you need napkins every day? I don’t use any napkin with my meal.
Or is it just to place on your lap like you’re in a restaurant?
I can’t figure out if you’re all realt fancy or all really messy?
Are you wiping food on it every day but only washing it every few days, so you’ll be wiping your hands with a napkin that’s got 3 day old food on it?
I’m not judging, I now think I want cloth napkins, but I can’t figure out the logistics here

DaffydownClock · 01/07/2024 17:52

I’ve used cloth ones for years, I hate the feel of paper napkins.

rainbowsparkle28 · 01/07/2024 17:53

People use napkins (aside from the odd special occasion when making the place nice)? 😮 I never do, for any spillages etc. use kitchen roll or a reusable microfibre cloth and spray and wipe down and probably kitchen roll if needed to wipe mouth but not very often needed.

HippyChickMama · 01/07/2024 18:06

We have some striped cotton IKEA ones for daily use, just folded and I bought 8 for 4 of us so I only put them in the wash every other day.
Dull silver linen ones for special occasions with silver napkin rings.
We only use paper napkins for picnics or for a party/BBQ with more guests than fabric napkins

Decafflatteplease · 01/07/2024 18:07

Box of cheeky wipes here had them for at least 10 years!

Inthemosquitogarden · 01/07/2024 18:09

Paper napkins in a napkin holder day to day, linen napkins in silver napkin rings when we have guests ; have got 8.

Inthemosquitogarden · 01/07/2024 18:09

Napkins from John Lewis - usually have them in sales

User0311 · 01/07/2024 18:12

Kitchen roll

MrsKwazi · 01/07/2024 18:12

Ikea Fantastisk, I have towers of them stacked in the utility room!

Roundaboot · 01/07/2024 18:13

Cloth ones here too but I tend to only put them out if we're eaten something messy.
I got mine in TK Maxx. Nothing fancy so I don't mind if they get stained

unsync · 01/07/2024 18:37

Cloth napkins. They have more coverage!

JaninaDuszejko · 02/07/2024 12:12

We have white linen ones for guests but now I'm liking the idea of everyday napkins so might need tocheck out IKEAs options.

EasterlyDirections · 02/07/2024 12:34

We have cheap cotton ones from Ikea, keep a basket of them in the kitchen cupboard and people help themselves to them. Always washed after each use, same as face flannels. No napkin rings, I bundle each one up into a neat roll after washing but don't iron, they are too scruffy for rings and I don't see the point in them, I don't think I have ever come across rings used in anyone's home. Use colour themed paper ones for special occasions

LoobyDoop2 · 06/07/2024 14:32

I bought a massive pack of cotton ones from amazon so they can be chucked in the wash whenever needed.

DGPP · 06/07/2024 14:36

Cloth napkins for environmental reasons. Good quality cloth napkins for guests. Never buy paper or kitchen rolls unless forced

Twofifty · 06/07/2024 14:41

I can't work out what you all use these for? If we've eaten with our hands then we wash our hands afterwards. What am I missing?

UnimaginableWindBird · 06/07/2024 14:43

White linen and I just chuck them in the wash with white bedding. Our table has a handy shelf, so no need for napkin rings, because each person's napkin goes on the shelf at their bit of table.

I have some Waterford fabric ones. I can't stand the feel or sound of paper napkins. I'd like some new ones but they have to feel right and have no sound! Following with interest.

What are "Waterford fabric ones " @LegoTherapy ?
