Would you put something like this up in your lounge, or is it going to go out of fashion too quickly to be worth the effort? www.grahambrown.com/uk/product/glasshouse-navy-wallpaper/119884-master/

Not necessarily this colour/pattern but this style of wallpaper, with busy bold patterns of animals/plants/birds.

I'm just thinking of putting it on the chimney breast as a feature, but maybe even that is too much? My taste is normally very neutral - in fact I don't think I've ever used wallpaper before, only paint in sensible neutrals or pastels - but I've got a sudden urge to add a bit more character.

Do you like it? Well then, have it. If you decide later that you don't like it, papering a chimney breast or a wall is easy peasy. Or a whole room come to that. But it gets a bit pricey if you keep changing your mind!

LoobyDop · 07/01/2024 18:17

I don’t think you should worry too much about what’s in and out of fashion where interiors are concerned- redecorating every time fashions changed would be exhausting and environmentally really damaging. Also I’ve found, having started to go for more colour after years of thinking I’d quickly get bored of anything other than neutrals, that the bolder I go, the more I love the result.

brighteststar · 07/01/2024 18:20

Oh how weird, this has been popping up on my Pinterest feed and I can’t stop thinking about it 😆 very clever advertising!

wallpapercurious · 07/01/2024 18:50

I've basically spent the whole day looking at wallpaper online - every time someone posts another wallpaper brand on this thread I end up ordering another batch of samples 😂 Thanks again all!

Actually, follow up question: what's the etiquette for feature wallpaper and picture rails? Should we put paper both above and below the rail, or just below, or take the rail off that part of the wall?

There are built in bookcases on either side of the fireplace, if that makes a difference.

I'm not claiming it's fashionable at all, but I've had loud patterned wallpaper put up in several places in our house. I haven't got tired of it, I love it just as much as when we put it up.

MouseMinge · 07/01/2024 19:51

I love it and would happily use it but I've always loved that sort of style and seen it go in and out of "fashion". Personally, I think whatever when it comes to that. If you truly love something go with it. If something is "good" it will stay good. I always think of William Morrison wallpaper and fabrics. They're in and out of style but they'll never be over. If I walked into a friend's room and they had that wallpaper I would tell them it was bloody glorious!

We put Graham & Brown wallpaper on our back living room wall when we moved in 3.5 years ago and I still love it

The wallpaper is so lovely up close and we went for a deep olive green on the other walls

I have a picture rail and personally I took the paper up to the rail but above the rail the same colour as the rest of the walls. I think it would look a bit odd otherwise.

I have an oriental mural on my chimney breast. I still love it and I did it about 6 years ago now. It adds interest to the room and its a bit different to the standard just putting a mirror up. Everyone does that!

This does look very striking and may I say your lounge is incredibly tidy!

@wallpapercurious those pictures are from the day after it was decorated 😂😂 hence no curtains and it looks a bit bare… it’s definitely not so tidy now the kids and dogs have lived in it for 3.5 years

ilovesushi · 07/01/2024 20:54

@Wheeeeee I love that wallpaper! I like the paler green version too though it is not as dramatic.

Hiddenpeople · 07/01/2024 22:48

I hate wallpaper and I don’t get the English obsession with it (I know it has been used/loved for a very long time). If you like it go for it op, it’s your house.

I'm having similar thoughts as I've totally fallen in love with this https://www.grahambrown.com/uk/product/serendipity-rainbow-bespoke-mural-/120406-master/

Oh I love this - go for it!!

@wallpapercurious I felt exactly same same as you last year - very neutral but fancied something a bit bolder. I deliberated for weeks before biting the bullet and ordering a lovely Emma Shipley wallpaper. It’s honestly the thing that makes me smile the most about my home. I’m so glad I took the plunge!

Fullofxmascbeer · 08/01/2024 00:48

We’ve just had something similar done. Go for it, you can always change one wall in a few years if you want to.

What I would warn about though is ordering furniture in fashionable colours. Having lived with a certain colour sofa for donkeys years that has gone out of fashion, come back in and now gone out again, I’m completely fed up with it but it’s still in perfect condition and it’s too expensive to change just for the sake of it.

Neutral furniture but wallpaper can be changed relatively inexpensively.

Confused So what they shouldn’t take care and decorate as they like?

AntiStuff · 08/01/2024 13:39

I've spent 49 years not committing to wallpaper in case I hated it or changed my mind, but caved in just before Christmas and put up some Sandberg 'Pine'. I love it!

I also like Borastapeter, Coordonne, Linwood (it's a bit spendy) and Cole & Son.

Flockameanie · 08/01/2024 14:52

I think the right wallpaper in the right space can be amazing. I put a thread on here a while ago about dark green floral paper for our downstairs loo and got some great suggestions.

We had cole and son 'Woods' going up the stairwell of a previous flat and it looked amazing.

And now you've inspired me to think about papering one of the walls of our living room and/or the kids' playroom

CarrieMoonbeams · 08/01/2024 15:22

@TrishTrix I came on to recommend Divine Savages! The best quality paper I've ever used (although I didn't do it myself, we got a decorator because I was a bit scared of mucking it up!)

I have Bye bye birdie on the chimney breast in ochre (they call it canary), and I've just ordered Portobello parade in wild violet for the chimney breast wall in the bedroom.

Go for it @wallpapercurious , you'll love it!

wallpapercurious · 08/01/2024 16:11

Thanks all! I am googling all your recommendations so please do keep them coming. As a wallpaper virgin, I'd not heard of any of these brands, and looking at lots of different designs is helping me narrow down what I like (mainly flowers and birds together on a blue background, for some reason). Asked DH's thoughts last night and he was way more enthusiastic about this than he usually is about my home improvement ideas 😂 So I think we're going to go for it! Now we just need to have the battle about whether to get a decorator in or do it ourselves...

Well William Morris does a lot of birds and botanicals on blue and designs in print for 100 years so not exactly a fad! https://www.janeclayton.co.uk/morris-co-bird-pomegranate-wallpaper-blue-sage-212540/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA1-6sBhAoEiwArqlGPsOOoRXg81NE_3HjvqvDiM9uHyB5-tDvdiev9p13lYREBTtVsbdS_xoC3n8QAvD_BwE
