Should I ditch my new side tables?

I've been refurbishing my lounge, with a new sofa, rug and side tables. I loved the patterned side tables when I bought them, but now I'm thinking they're too "busy" next to the patterned rug, so I'm thinking of cutting my losses and replacing the tables with something plainer. I may need to replace my old cushions too. What would you do?

I agree with you, it’s too much with the rug. You could paint or somehow upcycle the tables though?

Whatthediddlyfeck · 16/04/2023 20:45

The tables wouldn’t be my choice for the style of the other things in your room

SnarkyBag · 16/04/2023 20:47

I think they’re ok just not well placed and it’s all a bit over crowded with the cat scratch post, plants and both tables. If the cat post needs to stay then stick it in the corner where the plant is. Lose the table from that corner and get some cushions in a similar colour to the rug.

Meredusoleil · 16/04/2023 20:49

I love those side tables! Where are they from please? Agree they are too busy with the rug, but would change the rug for a plainer one personally!

Fakeairpodsfakeoodie · 16/04/2023 20:51

I think it's the rug that's throwing the room off. Everything else seems to go together.

dryingstuff · 16/04/2023 20:52

I think you could maybe make it work if you want for some bolder cushions, it's too much beige against the patterns to tie in the different patterns & place the table back

OhMerde · 16/04/2023 20:52

I'd ditch them. They need to be little square or rectangle ones to fit neatly in to the space. You need to up your cushion game too! Don't get red to match the rug. Matching like that is really naff but do look at the colours in the rug and get something that tones and complements. Get more than 2 little cushions aswell. Look online for ideas on cushion placement and how to layer colours.

Canyousewcushions · 16/04/2023 20:52

I think it's a bit unbalanced as the rug and tables are both quite maximalist but the walls and sofa are really plain and neutral. It means it's not quite all tied tother. There are also quite a lot of different colours going on with the grey and beige combined with the red/blue/black etc in the rug and tables.

If you really like them, I reckon you could make it work but need to tie it all together better- maybe bringing more of the carpet colours in through sofa cushions, and possibly consider painting the walls in a colour that matches something else- possibly the same gold/neutral shade that appears in the rug? Maybe with curtains that pick up.anothrr rug colour like the red or the really dark shade that's in it?

SmallAngryPenguinWoman · 16/04/2023 20:53

I like everything but the rug, sorry i know it's not what you asked.

Agreed! The tables are lovely and fit into the room well it's the rug that's out of place and making it look too busy. Get a plainer rug and it'll look lovely.

Canyousewcushions · 16/04/2023 20:54

I really the tables though!!

The scratch post is critical sofa-defence and is positioned to be the first thing the cat sees when it walks into the room. Other cat owners may understand! 🙂

Keep what brings you joy, not what others say.

MalagaNights · 16/04/2023 21:05

I think they go well with the carpet.

I think you need to embrace the boldness. Add some mixed plain and pattern cushions.

But I love rugs, Arabian style side tables, lots of mixed up cushions etc type look.

The sofa is plain the walls are plain you can definitely add mixed patterns into this. Particularly if you're going for a relaxed, hippie/ ethnic vice.

If you want a careful look, that is nice but unremarkable get plain tables and cushions.

But I love a room full of objects someone has bought because they love. Rather than a restrained things that 'go' together.

tsmainsqueeze · 16/04/2023 21:06

I really like them and with the room too , i think you could get a bit of a Moroccan vibe if you get some cushions that pick up the rug colours ,a couple of neutral ones too.

highwoodwitch · 16/04/2023 21:08

If you like the tables and rug maybe try some plain dark/black velvet cushions before you get rid of anything.
That just might bring it together.

Whaeanui · 16/04/2023 21:10

Yes you could lean into it and go very Moroccan themed too

highfidelity · 16/04/2023 21:11

Yes, ditch the side tables and whatever the thing is behind the side table on the left.

Also, pull your sofa away from the wall a few inches and move the rug so it sits under the front two legs of the sofa.

Stripycatz · 16/04/2023 21:14

I like the tables and the rug. Declutter a bit, and get some new cushions and maybe a new cover for the couch in cream if you can.
What's on your walls and in the rest of the room?

MaryBoggintonTrotterSmyke · 16/04/2023 21:17

I think they're OK with the rug actually, it's the sofa that doesn't work. With a black sofa (or a white one) and some Moroccan style cushions they could look great

MissingMoominMamma · 16/04/2023 21:18

If there was much more black in your cushions, it would pick up the black in the tables and rug, and tie it all together.

I like the rug and tables!

MalagaNights · 16/04/2023 21:19

The sofa needs a throw to pull it together.

You need more not less.

Divebar2021 · 16/04/2023 21:21

I like the rug but find the sofa a bit bland. Don’t bottle it OP. I’d add a mixture of Moroccan style cushions or a throw / blanket over the back. Shift the cat scratching post and plant because that seems to crowded. Add some table lamps - jobs a good un.
