Should I ditch my new side tables?

I've been refurbishing my lounge, with a new sofa, rug and side tables. I loved the patterned side tables when I bought them, but now I'm thinking they're too "busy" next to the patterned rug, so I'm thinking of cutting my losses and replacing the tables with something plainer. I may need to replace my old cushions too. What would you do?

Something like this over the back of the sofa.

I like the tables and the rug, it's the cushions. You need some that are colours from the rug to pull it all together I think.

nzeire · 16/04/2023 21:24

Weirdly like it. So over matchy matchy.
as someone said, it goes if you love it. My place is pretty eclectic in its pieces and I love it

go for throw and cushions I say, then reassess. Keep the tables, even if you end up putting them somewherebelse

Make the plant more prominent as that adds to the look.
Put the table behind the plant with a lamp on it.
Soft lighting in the evening will give it a lovely feel.

DustyLee123 · 16/04/2023 21:25

I’d keep the tables and change the rug

The scratch post is critical sofa-defence and is positioned to be the first thing the cat sees when it walks into the room. Other cat owners may understand! 🙂

Ahh I see! No cats here but do have an ugly huge throw to protect sofa from a lurcher. Both for general sofa sprawling and wiping his face after dinner on sofa if I don’t get to him first with a cloth! So I’d understand the limitations pet place on curating one’s space!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 16/04/2023 21:25

I love them! I'd prob get rid of the rug

dudsville · 16/04/2023 21:27

Imo the side tables and rug go very well together, it's your too plain sofa that's throwing it off! A nice throw that pulls in something odd the rug or tables would help.

MalagaNights · 16/04/2023 21:27

The rug is beautiful.
Keep the rug and build around it.

As someone said if this is your style lean in to it.

LibertyLily · 16/04/2023 21:28

I love the rug @flammabal! But I'd definitely do what @highfidelity said and bring the sofa forward a little so the front feet sit on the rug.

I'm not sure about the tables, tbh - to me they look a bit garden/garden room-y - but before jettisoning them I'd try new bold cushions and add artwork etc. If it's a vintage Moorish look you're leaning towards, I'd be looking for some antique tables a la Liberty style. We were fortunate to find one of those at a carboot sale pre-pandemic for the princely sum of £8!

Imho, colourful cushions/other textiles, artwork and stuff you love, that means something to you will bring the room together and you might find the tables work after all.

Thelastofbus · 16/04/2023 21:28

I agree with the cushion advice. Decide which two things you want to keep
out of sofa/cushions/tables and then replace the third.

To add to the suggestions of adding more and doing Moroccan styled: Moroccan themed living room

I think the rug and tables work. I like the different shapes in the room - it all adds interest. To pull the look together, I'd get some cushions or a throw in a similar colourway and design to the rug.

Enjoy your room 😊

RideACockHorseToSunburyCross · 16/04/2023 22:17

It's the cushions that don't go.

IcanandIwill · 16/04/2023 22:21

dryingstuff · 16/04/2023 20:52

I think you could maybe make it work if you want for some bolder cushions, it's too much beige against the patterns to tie in the different patterns & place the table back

Was going to say the same. I think you could pull it together with maybe some darker cushions to match the tables / rug.

pavillion1 · 16/04/2023 22:22

i ditch the rug

Divebar2021 · 16/04/2023 22:27

This rooms pretty classic

gohomeroger1 · 16/04/2023 22:32

You need big black cushions and white cushions. Layered on each other will tie everything together

KnickerlessParsons · 16/04/2023 22:37

Fakeairpodsfakeoodie · 16/04/2023 20:51

I think it's the rug that's throwing the room off. Everything else seems to go together.

The rug is needed for the colour. The room would be quite doith without it.
I agree the cushions should be a similar colour to the rug.

The4teddybears · 16/04/2023 22:48

black cushions will tie it all together. I’d go with a combination of shapes and sizes

Bookshipper · 16/04/2023 23:09

I think you need some natural wood side tables to balance out the rug. I got this one recently from swoon and like it:

In an ideal world I'd also lose the cat post but I get why you need it.

And what colour are you walls? They're reading slightly blue toned to me - I think you need a warmer neutral shade to cushion the colour of the sofa and rug.

margegunderson · 16/04/2023 23:17

I'd lose the beige sofa myself but then I like pattern and colour

Furries · 17/04/2023 01:22

Not my taste normally, but I do like the tables.

Id change the rug to something with a lighter base colour (cream/off-white) with black detail on it. So kind of the reverse of the black tables with white detail.

It’s obviously a new sofa, so can’t do anything about it now, but am not a fan of the colour. If the rug was changed, as above, then I’d go to town with some lovely jewel colours for cushions and throws for the sofa.

And I completely understand your reasoning for the scratching post!

Furries · 17/04/2023 01:25

Re cushions, I’d g9 for two 50x50 or 45x45 cushions in one colour and then two in a smaller size to contrast them.
