Should I ditch my new side tables?

I've been refurbishing my lounge, with a new sofa, rug and side tables. I loved the patterned side tables when I bought them, but now I'm thinking they're too "busy" next to the patterned rug, so I'm thinking of cutting my losses and replacing the tables with something plainer. I may need to replace my old cushions too. What would you do?

Pull the rug back until it is under the sofa by at minimum 9"
Side tables ON rug
Add more high contrast pattern cushions using colours and shapes from the rug.

I love the rug and the tables. I would go with more colour and pattern rather than less but I think that is just my own preference. My own sitting room has an eclectic Moroccan vibe which I love.

Cushions and a throw which coordinates with the rug.
Push back the side tables so they aren’t as in line with the front of the sofa. Put plants and some decor on the tables- ideally something which picks up the tones from the rug/ cushions.
Move the scratch post if you can
Artwork above the sofa. No need to get rid of the side tables.

However. If you feel they are too busy, I would just get a round slice of wood or similar to put on the table to mute/ cover the pattern a bit.

I think move them back and get more cushions. With tassels!

The rug doesn't work with the rest of the room. It's too dark and solid and the pattern is a bit boring. Try something lighter in a slightly 'faded' style with a more interesting pattern and get a few cushions in various shapes and sizes that pick up the rug's colours.

Also agree with Blip:

They go well. Need to lean into the luxurious maximalist vibe to make it work tho. Cushions on sofa - go big and colourful in similar patterns. Get big wall art. Dangly plants!

LoobyDop · 17/04/2023 15:28

The rug is too dark and overpowering for everything else, I’d ditch it.

LemonCat · 17/04/2023 16:08

Just realised that my earlier post is missing the pictures I had attached (thanks, MN), so let me try again. As several posters have said, the rug is too dark and overpowering, you need a lighter pattern to tie the rug to the other elements of the room.

Thanks. I like the rug in the second picture. Do you know where it is from?

I'm afraid it was just a random picture I took off Pinterest. Managed to find the link in my history, but it doesn't say where the rug is from.

Maybe have a look at RugVista, they have lots of Oriental rugs in similar styles and they do free returns, so easy to try out a few different rugs and see which works best with your furniture.

Keep them, but put bolder cushions on the sofa.
The sofa is the piece that lets the room down.

The post stays. Non-negotiable, because cats won't negotiate.

The rug is what's making it look busy.
Lovely tables I'd keep and change the rug

bingoitsadingo · 21/04/2023 11:18

I really like the rug and the tables, the sofa is fine, but I agree with everyone you need bolder cushions in a mix of shapes. The patterns on the tables and the rug have the same sort of vibe but the patterned cushions are much more modern and don't go at all.

Pull the sofa forward slightly so you can't see the stripe of hard floor under it. the patches of flooring you see around the cat post/tables/sofa add to the "cluttered" feeling. Can you position things so the tables are fully on the rug or fully off?

lostinfusion · 21/04/2023 11:22

personally. i'd loose the rug or change for a plain one

Try again...
I'm not sure that the colour of the sofa tones with the walls, rug etc, nor the style. Agree with other posters that the right cushions could tie it all in better.

4plusthehound · 25/04/2023 03:50

For me you need to pull the sofa away from the wall.

A slim sofa table behind the sofa - with a tall lamp, a few framed pictures and object or two you will dress the whole area better. The feet of the sofa will then be on the rug which is important.

And yes - lose the side tables OR place them somewhere else for plant maybe. More variety in the height of everything will improve the look of it enormously.

i say keep the rug!
