Anyone else made a big mistake with an expensive mattress?

Had our new mattress for about 6 months and I can’t take it anymore, it’s too firm, I wake up walking like an old woman until my bones have eased up. It’s also too hot. DH likes a firm mattress and when we tried lots in the shop this one seemed fine for me. Our last mattress was a split tension, my half medium, his half firm and that was great for us until it got too old (over 10 years).

We thought we were saving money by not getting the split type again but we’re going to either need to try and cure this one with a mattress topper, or sell it and start again. Not sure what is best, it’s such an expensive mistake, has anyone solved a too firm mattress with a topper?

We have a John Ryan Origins mattress, it’s the cheaper end of their range. King size, used daily for 6 years, still comfortable and still looks like new

I bought a bamboo mattress protector off Amazon. Fits over the topper and mattress.

We've just bought an Emma. It felt fantastic in the shop but the mattress we have feels really flabby and spongy. No better than our very very good mattress which finally conked out after 16 years. I'd love a new one just like it but they no longer exist. If the Emma doesn't get better we will return it.

I like the sound of these Panda toppers.

How you getting on @WinterFoxes ?
Am trying to return the bloody thing but no one getting back to me. Just want another mattress!

We have a John Ryan Legacy 2 super king zip and link with a Wool Company topper (merino on one side, cotton on the other) and it's incredible. John Ryan Artisan Bespoke 002 in the kids' rooms and a Winston in the guest room, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of them. They're all traditional pocket sprung with natural fillings, so the only downside is that they're heavy to flip.

We did move our mattress from a sprung divan base to slats when we got a new bed and I can confirm that made it feel much firmer, which is when we added the topper.

@Ridiculousradish - it's ok. I'm getting used to it but I will be amazed if it lasts ten years. It is already starting to dip a bit after a week!

Panda mattress for me I’ll save for it next year I’ll get a separate base then put in top I’ve a single bed I’m using now so it won’t be a problem but I love my panda topper once I found out about mattress no contest for me.

I finally went with John Lewis. I just couldn't bring myself to order something so big and expensive completely unseen over the internet.
It's coming tomorrow! 👏 🤗
Just hope we love it!
I was thinking, since we bought our current mattress my body has changed, I've been through the menopause and I have achy joints. I think my bones will appreciate the extra springiness. Hopefully DH will get on with it.
Bought some lovely new pillows and even though I don't need a new duvet cover I couldn't resist.

Meanwhile I'm having jitters about getting it upstairs - we live in an old cottage with low ceilings, there is a door (6ft height) just before the stairs, then a 180 degree turn around and up to face the other direction. So the mattress is going to need a slight squish and a bend to get it up there. Hope the delivery men don't get bolshy about it.

I'll report back in a few days time!

Yes, I did this OP. Don't worry, all is not lost.

Get yourself a decent mattress topper (although I wouldn't recommend mine from DAPW).

Turn and flip the mattress regularly. Do you have a big DH? If so he'll soften it with time!

Mine is now about 10 years old and I love it now. I went for a firm mattress so it'll last (I think it's totally wasteful to replace a mattress every 10 years, just protect it well instead).

If you've gone from a soft to firm mattress, it'll take your back a while to adjust. I had lower back ache for a while but think this was my spine straightening out 😯. I'm fine now.
