Anyone else made a big mistake with an expensive mattress?

Had our new mattress for about 6 months and I can’t take it anymore, it’s too firm, I wake up walking like an old woman until my bones have eased up. It’s also too hot. DH likes a firm mattress and when we tried lots in the shop this one seemed fine for me. Our last mattress was a split tension, my half medium, his half firm and that was great for us until it got too old (over 10 years).

We thought we were saving money by not getting the split type again but we’re going to either need to try and cure this one with a mattress topper, or sell it and start again. Not sure what is best, it’s such an expensive mistake, has anyone solved a too firm mattress with a topper?

Very strange my Vispring has a 25 yr guarantee, and we were able to change firmness if we didn’t get on with it after three months of use, and they dont even start to soften until after a few years. Had mine for 12 yrs now and its never missed a beat. Mind you it did cost over 10k so it should be good.

£10k for a mattress?

id be WAYYYY too scared it wouldn't be comfortable for me. What base did you buy? Or rather I suppose, how did you change one one?

doris9034 · 16/01/2023 22:59

We bought a Dormeo Octosmart mattress topper which has been an absolute game changer! I barely even feel my 23 stone moving at night! Would defo recommend

Phew I’m so glad so many mattress problems have been solved with a topper! Not heard of Panda ones but I have a Costco membership so I can check them out. They’re not hot/sweaty are they?

Not at all. I usually get hot at night. Not with this. I really like it.

I'm 8 stone and have a soft vi spring. (Admittedly bottom of the range at £1200 about 9 years ago) - it's way too soft and dips easily and needs turning all the time. I hate it. We have split tensions (his side is medium) and when my husband rolls over there is a pulling sensation underneath me. I suspect it's faulty but I left it too late to do anything about it.

I am about 9st. We have a split tension vispring matress on our bed. My side is medium and my husband’s side is firm. This is perfect for us even though we are both using a harder tension than recommended. Neither of us are great sleepers and often keep each other awake so we have just got a medium tension double bed for the spare room so I can go and sleep in there. The shop assistant at John Lewis spent ages telling me I should get a soft tension but I didn’t.

We have a simba and it's the best thing ever. I've never slept so good and I'm in a lot less pain with my neck and shoulders. Our last bed was £1000 and we hated it for years until we could afford to change it.

Another vote for the Simba. Had ours 6 years and still really comfy.

We need to change our mattress but I can't bear to make the wrong decision!! This thread is giving me shivers

AnotherDelphinium · 17/01/2023 02:12

I bought a Dreamcloud and it was “ok”. It wasn’t really any improvement on what it had replaced, but my DP hated it. It had a 365 day return, so six months in we got it collected.

We went to dreams as they had a special mattress you lie on and it tells you what will work for you, it came up with a selection and our favourite was the Flaxby Nature one, so we got it. I’m so glad I changed, as we both love this one!

I think all the mattress-in-boxes are a bit of a marketing gimmick, or only really great for the lighter customer.

LemonSwan · 17/01/2023 02:22

Yes an Emma! Horrendous.

Goodluck with the sending back 🤣 We ended up being bribed by them to even try a flimsy piece of foam.

Maybe we should try the panda topper. But I also have good mind to just throw the whole lot in the bin and vow never to buy from some hip trending bed company.

Gingernaut · 17/01/2023 02:35

Bought a Hyde Extra firm hybrid mattress.

OMFG

I've got a thick mattress topper on top, deep sheet and trying to get out of bed is a struggle.

I'm like a beetle stuck on its back.

Turns out, I'm a medium/soft type.

@s1987c @WowIlikereallyhateyou

I'm another Vi-Spring buyer, I have BIG regrets. I saved up for a year to be able to afford my 5k mattress. I spent ages and ages trying all the mattresses in the shop and the staff even took the mattress I liked best and laid it on the stone shop floor so I could simulate my vintage bed base. Theirs was heavenly. From day one I thought they'd sent me the wrong one. I wanted ultra soft, what I got felt like concrete. It's always been way too hard and it hasn't given an inch after 10yrs. I ended up having to put 3, yes 3 toppers on it to get the same feeling as the one on the shop floor. I'll never ever buy from them again. Yes, they say you can change it, but what to? Allegedly I already had their softest mattress. Bollocks.

How come you have a soft Vi-spring like me & yours is too soft and mine is like a concrete slab?

Nat6999 · 17/01/2023 04:10

My mum bought an £800 mattress, one of this with wool & silk in it, within a week she wanted to throw it out of the window. She wishes she had bought a sprung memory foam one like her old one. It is too heavy to spin around, she has to wait for ds to come to do it for her, the tufts stick in her when she is in bed & it is so thick her feet don't touch the floor when she is sat on the edge & she is frightened of falling out of it.

Nat6999 · 17/01/2023 04:14

I recommend Shires mattresses, I'm shortly going to buy my third one. I rang the manufacturers when I was ready to buy my second one, gave them the name of my old one & asked for something similar & they told me which one to buy. They have both been like sleeping on a cloud.

We have had exactly the same problem with Hypnos. Our 6 month £2,000 mattress is sunken and lumpy. Their solution was to send a man who measured the dip and claim it was normal settlement. It’s impossible to sleep on, like sleeping on a slope.

Discovered on Trust Pilot literally hundreds of identical stories of Hypnos ignoring their own warranty.

Hongkongsuey · 17/01/2023 07:10

We bought the Panda for our spare room bed-we like to sleep in there sometimes for a change! Our main one is a John Ryan Artisan Natural-had it 5 years and it’s wonderful. Yes it needs regular turning which takes 2 of us but it’s worth it.

Yes, it is probably more than that now, as this was 12 yrs ago. We have a zip link, i have soft and OH has medium. According to his weight he should have firm which was too hard,so we swapped out for medium which was perfect. we have a bed frame with sprung base.
I do believe alot the vi spring sold at John Lewis ie starter models are of inferior quality to those purchased directly or in showrooms. We have the sublime supreme model and it is honestly like sleeping on a cloud, plus the added bonus with it is you do not have to turn it as it is guaranteed not to sagg.
It is undoubtedly one of the best things I have ever bought, my duvets and pillows are the same, but i realise they are quite an investment,so not for everyone.

OntarioBagnet · 17/01/2023 07:55

Yes. I got a 2k mattress, think it's a John Ryan one, hate it. It's too soft so don't even think a topper will help. Anyway it's a mattress with a built in topper so it's supposed to be one side only at the top. We turned it upside down from week one and that helped.

AutumnIsMyFavouriteSeason · 17/01/2023 08:07

Same problem! We got a Simba topper - utter bliss now. Never want to change my mattress/topper again.

StandUpStraight · 17/01/2023 08:13

We have had this problem, but we’ve also gone through lots of money trying to find a topper that works. We recently went back into the shop to check that they had in fact delivered us the right mattress (vispring), and they had - but the reason the one in the shop felt softer was that it was on a divan base with springs. It seems that can make a huge difference to the feel of a mattress - ours is just on a slatted bed base. So annoying, wish I had known.

Isthatascratchonmygrandmother · 17/01/2023 08:18

We got a hypnos a couple of years ago and it's like sleeping on a cloud but with good support. Never been happy with a mattress until we got this one.

user1471505356 · 17/01/2023 08:23

Have had a Dreams mattress for 12years seems like new ,but a bugger to turn, superkingsize might be the problem.

Bunny2021 · 17/01/2023 08:40

@lilacdaisy611 exactly the same problem with our Emma - massive rise in the middle of the bed. When we co-sleep our toddler just ends up rolling into us.

The Premier Inn beds are so good! Hypnos I think they're called.

This isn't totally true though. I was in the Vi-Spring showroom and I tested their softest mattress on their stone floor. It felt amazing, so I was bitterly disappointed when my mattress arrived and it felt like concrete on my bedframe. I'm adamant they sent me a hard bed with a soft label.

StandUpStraight · 17/01/2023 09:44

That is so interesting @StarInTheHeavens
We are on the cusp of buying the divan base. Maybe we won’t after all. It was the shop’s explanation for why our mattress feels so much harder than their model that we ordered… very interesting indeed. Mattresses are the easiest expensive mistake to make…

That's what our last mattress was like for the first twelve years. I mourn it.

First night on the Emma last night. It was OK. Not sure it's right though. I might look up the Hypnos. Which one did you get @Isthatascratchonmygrandmother ?
