Anyone else made a big mistake with an expensive mattress?

DearSisterMichael · 13/01/2023 10:24

Had our new mattress for about 6 months and I can’t take it anymore, it’s too firm, I wake up walking like an old woman until my bones have eased up. It’s also too hot. DH likes a firm mattress and when we tried lots in the shop this one seemed fine for me. Our last mattress was a split tension, my half medium, his half firm and that was great for us until it got too old (over 10 years).

We thought we were saving money by not getting the split type again but we’re going to either need to try and cure this one with a mattress topper, or sell it and start again. Not sure what is best, it’s such an expensive mistake, has anyone solved a too firm mattress with a topper?

We bought a new mattress about a year ago which seemed great in the shop. I hated it as soon as it arrived. Too hard, but I tried to convince myself it was okay because I couldn't face returning it. We ordered a Panda mattress topper a couple of months ago and it has made a big difference. We also tried the Emma flip topper and found that just as good really. I returned the Emma one eventually as I was freaked out by the chemical smell it had when it arrived. It does wear off, but I wonder what I am breathing in. The Panda topper is made of natural materials.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 16/01/2023 18:52

I have anEve hybrid mattress and I love it. I tried a Tempur and couldn’t change it fast enough- hot, sweaty, difficult to turn over on.
DD swears by Hypnos mattresses.
Check Which? for best buys.

LadyEloise1 · 16/01/2023 20:15

Yes.
We bought a new 6ft zip and link mattress.
Over €1000.
I hate it.
It's too soft despite supposedly being the firmest in the shop.
There's already a body shaped dent in the middle of each mattress and you can't turn the mattresses on to the other side just rotate them.
A swizz - you'll have to replace the mattress sooner. Grrrrrrrrr
If it's this bad 4 months after delivery what's it going to be like in a few years.
I had waited sooo long for a new mattress. Sad
DH not bothered. He hits the pillow and is out in no time. No back issues.
I'm so disappointed.

AmandaHoldensLips · 16/01/2023 20:23

I only just found out that the mattress tension should be chosen according to your bodyweight.

Up to 11 stones - soft
11 - 15 stones - medium
16+ stones - firm
then extra firm for whatever the more statuesque weight was

It's about the body and lumbar support.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 16/01/2023 20:56

Very useful thread, thanks

Memory Foam - hate it. I fail to see any benefits to it at all.

siroodlesofnoodles · 16/01/2023 20:58

I have an Emma and it took me about six weeks to get used it to.

I requested a free topper.. by the time they bloody sent it I'd got used to my Emma and now going to bed is actually a dream. Grin

RedRiverShore3 · 16/01/2023 21:14

Blimey, just marking place of what not to get, we are thinking of a new mattress at the moment and this thread isn't very heartening. We have a cheapish Silentnight at the moment which is about 8 years old and we were going to treat ourselves to a more expensive mattress/bed

Yes, got a fancy memory foam gel thing. Haven’t had it long. Maybe 3 months. Two distinct body shapes and a big lump of no man’s land down the middle. Also it’s too deep for our sheets and they ping off in the night. It’s now a climb to get into the bed. Saved up for ages to buy this.

You can buy extra deep sheets in John Lewis - they are the only ones that stay on my bed (also firm with a mattress topper!)

crochetmylifeaway · 16/01/2023 21:26

We have a simba and it's the best thing ever. I've never slept so good and I'm in a lot less pain with my neck and shoulders. Our last bed was £1000 and we hated it for years until we could afford to change it.

RumNotRun · 16/01/2023 21:29

@DobbyTheHouseElk and anyone else whose sheets don't stay on, these are amazing!

Emma - hated it. Returned it.

Don't believe the hype around layered memory foam mattresses.

Jmaho · 16/01/2023 21:46

I would really like to buy a new bed and mattress. We haven't had ours for years and years but it was quite cheap and I'd like to spend a decent amount and get something really nice
Every few months I spend an evening reading up on the best mattresses and get so confused by opinions and reviews I just forget about it. This has been going on for about 2 years now!
My worry is I know if we fork out on something and hate it my husband will not be wanting to buy twice and we will end up having to keep it
I do always look at the Premier Inn mattresses as they have really good reviews but then some not so good too....

lilacdaisy611 · 16/01/2023 21:49

HATE HATE HATE our Emma. My back is always aching.

Like other posters, also bought a Panda topper. It helps, but on a super king feels like both sides of the bed are slumping down with the memory foam base and the middle of the bed is higher if that makes sense (as me and DH sleep towards sides).

Definite buyers remorse. Pity because we went off the Which? Scores and reviews but should have come to MN and I would have known better!

Have an Eve in the guest bed and it's much more comfortable.

Nanatokidsdogshampsters · 16/01/2023 21:54

We went on a blanket tour in Tenerife and bought a full wool mattress no springs it cost £1500
(DH idea) it is the best mattress ever.
It's 8 years old now and still in great condition.
Warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

EffortlessDesmond · 16/01/2023 21:55

We've just ordered a ViSpring mattress, but it's being made to order as it's not a standard size so it will be mid-March before we sleep on it. Fingers crossed that we love it.

snowsilver · 16/01/2023 21:58

Went out of my way to get a natural wool mattress, no memory foam or the like.
I hate it, it's way too hard.
I have a mattress topper but it's man made fibre so hot and sweaty 🥵

FusionChefGeoff · 16/01/2023 22:12

We got a topper and I love love love my bed now. Only problem is that we need super extra deep fitted sheets and super king so they are generally mega bucks!!!

magicthree · 16/01/2023 22:24

My mattress is old but I don't want to buy a new one because it's a lot of money if you make a mistake. So far toppers have kept my old mattress going successfully.

Norov · 16/01/2023 22:27

Me! And I still haven’t fixed it. I got a firm mattress, the sort of £3k all natural premium John Lewis one. All natural fibres as I’m sweaty and firm as I mistakenly thought it would support my bad back more.

i wanted panda to work so much but it was boiling, though I am sweatier than normal people, and I couldn’t turn over easily. They were true to their customer service word and it was collected by a courier with a full refund. I can’t fault them for that.

what has helped a little is two down pillows and my neck more supported by them and I’ll try a wool topper next. And learning to sleep on my back, not my side.

but really I need a medium mattress.

paintitallover · 16/01/2023 22:41

This is amazing. I've had mine 5 years and it is still good

I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think? https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-natural-duck-feather-and-down-5cm-deep-mattress-topper/p3045975?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&sshare=jlappioss_Y29tLmFwcGxlLlVJS2l0LmFjdGl2aXR5LkNvcHlUb1Bhc3RlYm9hcmQ=

I'm 8 stone and have a soft vi spring. (Admittedly bottom of the range at £1200 about 9 years ago) - it's way too soft and dips easily and needs turning all the time. I hate it. We have split tensions (his side is medium) and when my husband rolls over there is a pulling sensation underneath me. I suspect it's faulty but I left it too late to do anything about it.

Nanatokidsdogshampsters · 16/01/2023 22:49

@stayathomegardener it's where you are given
a small tour of the island and taken to a showroom first.
DH booked us in for something to do.
He was chosen as a guinea pig to test this mattress.
Was lying on it for at least 30 minutes.
The presenter asked him how comfortable it was he said it was.
She then pulled from underneath lots of different tools, pots and kitchen tools.
He didn't feel anything.
It's made in England and was delivered a month later.
I was sceptical at first now I love it.
Yes it was expensive.
We bought the mattress, topper, duvet and pillows.

You can but deeper fitted sheets at Dunelm and John Lewis etc

WellTidy · 16/01/2023 22:57

Yes. Paid a fortune for an emperor divan bed and pocket sprung mattress, plus needed a made to measure headboard and new massive duvet, wider pillows and new bedding.

Mattress came and I barely slept for four nights. I found it so incredibly firm, but DH liked it. My mum came to stay as DH and I went away for a few nights and directed the DC to run all over it, again and again and again, jump as high as they could for as long as they could etc.

We came back (in the meantime I’d ordered a really expensive mattress topper) and it was suddenly fine! The mattress topper made it way too soft for me and for DH.

It worked out in the end but for a time I thought I’d made a very expensive mistake indeed.
