Where on earth do you buy a sofa??

I'm 28 and I've had a hand me down sofa since I was 20, my dad gave it to me when I moved out. It's still going on but the pillows are getting thin and I feel like I can feel the frame when I sit on it.

But I have no idea where is a good place for a new sofa or how much to budget? I've heard people say DFS is great and others say they're crap quality. I can't spend a fortune but I also don't wanna to spend too little and get something crap since that's just a waste of money. Where do I look??

I like the ones on Etsy from Abode Sofas www.etsy.com/uk/shop/AbodeSofas?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=646805890

I bought mine from IKEA in 2001. Just recently started looking in IKEA for a replacement.

Marcipex · 26/10/2021 01:07

Our IKEA leather sofa is mega uncomfortable. I can feel the wooden frame so much that I often have to go and sit on my bed instead.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 26/10/2021 01:26

oak furniture land

we have electric reclining armchairs and sofas. they are awesome

Moonlitdoor · 26/10/2021 05:35

Have a look in your area for independent sofa shops. We have a number that do end or range or seconds. The best thing is that they are in stock. Bought sofa Saturday delivered Tuesday. We had been told 15-22 weeks in other shops.

MimiDaisy11 · 26/10/2021 05:41

I didn’t realise IKEA were so popular. I recently got one from Habitat through Argos. Not that expensive and good quality.

Werehamster · 26/10/2021 06:02

I have a large sectional sofa from IKEA. I love that you can remove and wash the covers really easily as my kids are always spilling stuff. We also bought an extra section and changed the shape slightly from what I originally had.

We have a 20yo Klippan from IKEA that is still going strong despite having 3DC for most of its life. We've beeen through a few (light coloured) covers, Bemz do nice covers for IKEA sofas. I've just bought a 60yo vintage leather Danish sofa that was not cheap even at that age but is still in lovely condition. If the frame of a sofa is good it should last decades, I've got an Edwardian chaise that I've just had recovered that is still going strong.

Tightwad2020 · 26/10/2021 20:59

IKEA sofas are good value and better made (in my opinion) than Made.

Also, there is a company called Bemz which makes sofa covers and feet for the entire range of IKEA sofas, so you can customise your sofa and change it. I got a linen cover for an ancient, but still good, Klippan sofa and switched the unlovely tubular steel feet for some sleek walnut ones. i'm in the market for a new sofa and I might go back to IKEA because of the extra flexiblity that this Bemz service gives you - for £200 you can change your sofa.

Ours are the Abbey ones from M&S which I really recommend. Lots of shapes and fabrics to choose from. I think we had 30% off earlier this year.

Tightwad2020 · 26/10/2021 21:09

Has anyone got/tried the Stocksand sofa? It's the kind of shope I quite like.

GoingOutOutNEVER · 26/10/2021 21:15

Argos, fast delivery (except when you order and 2 days later lockdown so it took 3months and then they just delivered it to the front door and me and DS had to bring in 3 seater sofa and chair ..all the delivery men said as they left it was Good Luck, sorry covid and all that shit) usually they’re great

lmpeachment · 26/10/2021 21:17

IKEA for me. Had it 14 years and it's just about time I replaced it.

SquashedAndSqueezed · 26/10/2021 21:36

We have 2 that we bought at the same time from different places.

Sofology one is great and well priced, sitting on it now! Next one is beautiful, feels so lux and was my go to place when I was in labour 😅 but OMG £££

altiara · 27/10/2021 20:43

I’ve bought this year a DFS fabric swivel armchair which is really comfortable but you can see the bottom cushion doesn’t bounce back that well so not sure how many years it will last.
Just had my DFS leather Harlan sofa arrive this month for my kitchen, really lovely leather.
Have a snug sofa for my living room which is really really comfortable yet firm. This was delivered really quickly compared to DFS.

I’d go to some of the big stores and try out the sofas and see how you get on. Then compare your favourites to smaller stores. The sales will be here soon so take your time finding one that you think is good quality.

HarrisMcCoo · 27/10/2021 20:54

DFS current one - lasted 11 years. New one ordered from IKEA. Ektorp.

drury7thedition · 27/10/2021 21:02

Next here, I"ve got five sofas from Next in different rooms.

The oldest ones are five years old and a pure wool tweed - very hard wearing, next oldest are a linen/cotton mix and the last one velvet. All are faring really well.

Consider your fabric when buying a sofa. The fabric type affects the life, massively.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 07/11/2021 18:59

Following with interest.

We went to four shops looking at Sofas today. Didn't see anything we loved. Just two that were possibly ok.

PickupaPenguin8 · 07/11/2021 19:05

Sofa workshop.

sohypnotic · 07/11/2021 19:13

Ikea - currently have a Landskrona leather, £600 a bargain! (And comfortable)

LittleWingSoul · 10/11/2021 20:16

Ikea kivik. We have 2, they are 8 years old and have gone through 3 house moves worth of assembly and disassembly, plus a more recent disassembly to replace the covers. They look and feel as good as new!

My brother had a literal "PIVOT" situation with a Made sofa - check you have sufficient access before ordering an old school all in one piece type sofa! His lived wedged into the bathroom doorway for 2 days, which was as far as they could get it, before Made sent someone back out to take it away. True story!

Tulipomania · 12/11/2021 16:42

Sofa Workshop bought 15 years ago still look like new.

bassackwards · 12/11/2021 16:46

We just bought an L shaped sofa from sofa.com and are really happy with it

Supersimkin2 · 12/11/2021 16:49

Not made.com. Look nice for a week, fall to bits after a year. When they collapse you see the upholstery is kitchen sponge and sawdust.

I rate a nice horsehair antique (cheap) or a hotel supplier.

AnnieSnap · 12/11/2021 16:52

I like Sofology. The price is the price unlike DFS that has constant meaningless sales. The sales experience is very good, with staff that know their product and don’t work on commission, so there is no pressure to buy. They have a very wide range of product and payment methods, including interest free credit.
