Where on earth do you buy a sofa??

I'm 28 and I've had a hand me down sofa since I was 20, my dad gave it to me when I moved out. It's still going on but the pillows are getting thin and I feel like I can feel the frame when I sit on it.

But I have no idea where is a good place for a new sofa or how much to budget? I've heard people say DFS is great and others say they're crap quality. I can't spend a fortune but I also don't wanna to spend too little and get something crap since that's just a waste of money. Where do I look??

IKEA - we have Stocksund - so comfy - had it years - we also have wash and wear covers for it. It changes from pink to blue every so often. That is the good thing about many IKEA sofas, they have washable removable covers.

Alternatively, find a local upholstery place and they can give it a new lease of life with new cushions and fabric.

I’d say dependent on attachment and quality of your existing frame, as it can be quite expensive!

My IKEA sofa is just what I wanted but it's really not comfortable except in one position. My main aim was to have it off the ground so I could have a robot hoover though. Always sit on IKEA sofas first, and particularly don't get suckered into a sofa bed, we had one for years which was plain painful to sit on.

I bought one from Dunelm last year as a 'make do' sofa that had a quick delivery option. Best sofa I've had in a long time, for the bargain price of £650. Love it.

MrsBungle · 25/10/2021 00:17

Mine is from whatever sofology used to be called. Had it 10 years and it’s dated tbh (brown leather corner) but it’s in perfect condition. Really good buy.

Spottybotty20 · 25/10/2021 00:21

I’ve got a Parker Knoll sofa, chosen because it was the only sofa that had a high enough back to be comfortable. It’s been battered by two toddlers and is still perfect. Cleans up lovely and is timeless in our period house. I wouldn’t buy anything else (and will get this reupholstered before I bought new)

I second SofaSofa. We bought one of their sofas when our children were small. It was meant to be a stop gap sofa that we didn't need to be too precious about. We all loved it and it was very very comfortable. And we kept it for nearly 20 years.
My daughter moved out and we gave her the sofa (and it's still going strong) and got an IKEA one - which is very good too.
We bought this sofa about 4 years ago.
We initially had ordered a Habitat one - which ended up being nothing but hassle. They told us it was in stock and could be delivered the next week. A few days later we were told that it would actually be 12 weeks. This turned into 16 weeks. Then we had a delivery slot, and they didn't turn up. This happened again. The third time they turned up with only one part of the sofa. In the end we cancelled the order and bought the IKEA sofa. That process was very smooth.

Ours is an Ektorp 2 seater from IKEA, £250ish in 2018. It’s very comfy and the cover comes off for washing. It also came flat packed which is good for getting it though doorways. Can’t believe people how much people seem to spend on sofas, I can’t believe they would be multiple times better to justify the price tag!

@womaninatightspot

Ikea or currently mines from sofology. If you go online you can get returns/ seconds for half the price delivered. I have kids/ dog/ cat so not bothered about perfection.
Have you got a link for for the reduced priced ones as I can’t find any online. I’m not fussed about small imperfections!
Bigfatpicnic · 25/10/2021 08:12

Ignore me, I’ve found the link! @womaninatightspot

Previously had 2 from sofa sofa, brilliant. Now have ikea one and really isn’t comfortable…

Snowdropsandbluebells · 25/10/2021 10:42

Just bought one from IKEA
Ektorp

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 25/10/2021 10:43

I've had two from DFS both great
Take a while to be delivered but you can pay monthly and it works out not too expensive

DedalusBloom · 25/10/2021 10:49

We've had our Next one 4 years now and its still pristine and super comfy. cushions haven't flattened or anything.

Africa2go · 25/10/2021 14:27

Our current sofa is from Sofa sofa.

Wouldn't recomment it - it's 4 years old and I've hated it for about 3.5 of those 4 years. Uncomfortable, always needing to adjust the cushions. Makes me mad that H persuaded me to buy it every time I sit on it!!

Would recommend Next - we had a fab sofa for about 2 years, moved house and gave it to our friends. 10 years on, its still going strong in their house!!

Would also rate M&S (but not their basic line) We have an Abbey fabric sofa and thats stood the real test of time / children / house moves.

Also had a Laura Ashley chair re-upholstered - as pp says, it doesn't work out as a cheap fix but if you have a shape / frame that you love & is decent quality, it may be worth exploring this option.

Houseofvelour · 25/10/2021 14:52

We got our sofas from Sofology. They look amazing but they only do fibre cushions, not foam. They flatten really quickly and are super uncomfortable so we had to get an upholsterer to put foam cushions in them.

Always go for foam!

NFLBingo · 25/10/2021 15:04

We have a 3-seater Sofology one at the moment and paid about £700 (with stain cover) and the back cushions are pretty saggy so I wouldn’t recommend a fibre cushion, it’d probably be fine if we could get some foam ones to insert into the back though.
We’ve just bought a new corner sofa from DFS and an additional large storage footrest with the cover for stains and stuff and it was about £1500.
We’re paying it off over 4 years and it’s about £35 a month interest free, I’m just hoping when it comes it lives up to how comfy it was in store!

shinynewapple21 · 25/10/2021 17:38

We've just ordered a new one from furniture village .

shinynewapple21 · 25/10/2021 17:39

Previous one from M&S 18 years ago .

jaundicedoutlook · 25/10/2021 19:00

We’ve got two from Arlo & Jacob and two from Sofas and Stuff. Would recommend both.

Previously had sofas from Heals (good, but this was 18 years ago and my recent Heals experiences have been poor) and M&S, which was wildly uncomfortable and got chucked out at the first reasonable opportunity.

absolutelynotfabulous · 25/10/2021 19:56

Nockeby from ikea. It's fine for a cheapish sofa.

Previously to that I had a Cardiff from sofasofa which lasted 10 years. I'd have bought another but they don't make them any more.

Colouringaddict · 25/10/2021 19:59

Just bought a new one from SCS, our old one came from there and has lasted 12 years
