Smeg kettle and toaster.... style over substance

Hello,

I have always wanted a smeg toaster and kettle in red. I was about to buy but I read some reviews and it appears they a bit style over substance. Any more reliable recommendations?

I’ve got a smeg kettle - it weighs a ton so I’m always thinking it’s full when it’s not and the E fell off. So not great in my experience

Muststopeating · 12/07/2021 09:08

My brother gave them to my mum for Christmas in white for her new kitchen.

They do look beautiful! In terms of substance there isn't much, the toaster is a toaster is a toaster. Not anything that differentiates it. The kettle has the temperature setting and sings a little song.

I have read things about many smeg appliances being expensive but ultimately poor quality.

If you can afford it and it won't break your heart to replace in a year or two if they don't last then I'd go for it. They do look lovely. If you'd be stretching yourself then I wouldn't.

I have both, with the kettle the base went on it 2 days past the warranty and the toaster didn't last much longer. I have the coffee maker and also the separate milk frother though, so feel I am stuck with the brand for now.

Dulit architect might be a good alternative- they’re not significantly cheaper, maybe 20-30£ quid.

I paid approx £200 for my kettle and 4 slice toaster in 2014 and they’re still going strong. The toaster handle sticks occasionally but no rust / limescale on the kettle at all.

Def recommend

Createdjustforthis · 12/07/2021 22:20

The toaster is fine but the kettle is a bastard and I hate it. It’s a horrible plasticky coated thing and it’s impossible to clean and always looks greasy and horrid. The plastic fake stainless steel bits are peeling off and flaking.

I hate it and have been hoping it’ll pack in for the last 7 years but the bastard thing will not die, so it has that going for it.

TwinsAndTrifle · 12/07/2021 22:22

We've got them. They're lovely to look at. And shite.

altiara · 12/07/2021 23:30

Noooooo, I really want them, they’re so beautiful.

TwinsAndTrifle · 12/07/2021 23:38

They are. And completely impractical.

The lid hinge on the kettle is buggered already. If you tip to get the last bit of water out, you burn your knuckles on the lid.

The toaster does feck all to bread on the 2min setting. Burns it on the 3min setting.

Absolute definition of style over substance.

Melitza · 12/07/2021 23:46

My dd has the kettle and loves it. She says it boils really fast.

CimCardashian · 12/07/2021 23:51

We have both. I like the kettle. The toaster is as described…. Either under done or burnt. And it browns one side much more than the other. I like the bagel setting though and yes, they look marvellous.

wearenearlythere1 · 13/07/2021 08:01

This is so sad I always thought I would buy some smeg stuff when the house was done.... but the reviews are terrible and you guys have confirmed it!!!

@Ohpulltheotherone

Dulit architect is beautiful and gets good reviews. I don't mind paying the orove for something good!!

My Smeg kettle lasted about 2 months before the thermostat went. Have a kitchen aid now, it's awesome.

ginghamtablecloths · 13/07/2021 08:38

I've found that despite the belief that 'you get what you pay for' it's never worth paying very much over the odds for items that are fashionable because they simply do not last.

Paying medium price is better than either extreme. Sister bought a kettle for over £60 at a food fair. I admired it politely, said nowt but (as I suspected) it lasted less than a year before conking out.

If you want to hear the opinion of the older generation on this item there's a thread on Gransnet under Chat - 'Worlds poshest toaster!' where the grannies are laughing their socks off at, er, its beauty!

TwinsAndTrifle · 13/07/2021 09:13

Before these beautiful bits of junk, I had a dualit. Which lasted and worked brilliantly for 12years. Even sold it used on eBay for £35.

Oh I miss that kettle Grin

Powertothepetal · 13/07/2021 17:05

I couldn’t ever have anything smeg branded as whenever I look at the word ‘smeg’ I always think of smegma/dick cheese...

It used to really anger me as their products would be so beautiful without the bloody word smeg emblazoned all over it!

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 13/07/2021 21:45

Not impressed, and their customer service is shite. Epic battle to communicate with them, then deadly silence - during which we went and bought a new kettle - and then a new Smeg kettle turned up after I'd given up all hope of a sensible response from them.

Toaster doesn't toast evenly which should be bloody basic, you'd think.

5/10.

KirstenBlest · 18/07/2021 17:33

My toaster was about £5.

windmill26 · 18/07/2021 20:40

KitchenAid have a red kettle and toaster in their range if you want to compare the reviews with Smeg .You can find them in John Lewis.
Subzero - Wolf have great looking toasters with red knobs.
The Conran shop have a Gae Aulenti design called Toast with red accents.
Hay have one called Sowden in light blue with red knob.
I am a sucker for great looking kitchen equipment but I also expect things to do the job they were made for.We have a Waring commercial toaster and it is a great looking workhorse but when it dies ...will be replaced by a Subzero -Wolf (Love it! LOL).

DukeofEarlGrey · 18/07/2021 20:41

Kettle broke within a few months.

mamacoast · 18/07/2021 22:05

My last toaster was a Breville and lasted for 15 years. Just replaced it with another Breville. I think it looks stylish and I am confident that it will have longevity too.

StartingAgain33 · 19/07/2021 22:31

I bought a second hand dualit toaster on ebay. V good quality and beautiful. They are built to last as components can be replaced. Will buy a dualit kettle when mine conks it.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/07/2021 22:49

I would never buy anything Smeg after the shocking experience we had with our oven, such bad customer service.
